Louis Vuitton captures zeitgeist for conclave chic at Avignon show

T he pageantry and drama of the papacy is very much on trend. Hot on the heels of white smoke at the Vatican and Conclave in cinemas, the gothic Palais des Papes in Avignon, home to the popes of the 14th century, hosted a Louis Vuitton catwalk, the first fashion show at the palace in its 700-year history.
There was no shortage of pomp and ceremony in the central courtyard of one of Europe's largest medieval structures, where 400 chairs with tall, arched backs and plush, cardinal-red cushions were ranked tightly for Brigitte Macron, Cate Blanchett, Pharrell Williams, a clutch of celebrities making a post-Cannes detour, and a select few of Louis Vuitton's most deep-pocketed clients.

In a preview, the designer Nicolas Ghesquière said the collection was part-Arthurian legend, part-Haim sisters on stage. (Danielle and Este Haim were in the audience; the medieval ghosts perhaps watching from within the walls.) 'There is something medieval, for sure, but something futuristic too. This is armour, but for now,' he said.
Ghesquière chose the building last year, drawn not by its papal origins but by his own memories of attending the experimental theatre festival it hosts each summer. 'Dressing is a performance that we are all part of. I love that about fashion, I think it's really cool,' he said.

That the papacy has been so visible this year is fitting for a designer whose nose for the zeitgeist has secured an impressive 11-year run at the helm of Vuitton. 'The coincidence is interesting, of course. And there is a magnetism to this place, to the idea of believing,' he said.

The venue also reflects the scale of Louis Vuitton. It is the biggest fashion brand in the LVMH stable, which generated $88bn (£65bn) in revenue in 2024. Filling a gothic palace with celebrities is a power flex the 14th-century popes for whom it was built would have respected.

Ghesquière understands that luxury has become a vast industry, not because people want to be seen to have an expensive handbag, but because they want to be seen to have status, taste and class, all of which are signalled by taking over the Unesco-listed Palais des Papes. Louis Vuitton will finance a new architectural lighting project to spotlight the facade after dark.

Most of the looks were short tunic dresses worn with slouchy boots, a silhouette that was signalling both heraldic knight and Glastonbury. For evening there were glittering metallic jersey gowns with bishop sleeves: a bit Joan of Arc, a bit Janis Joplin.

Ghesquière, who has stayed at the top of the game during two decades when fashion has grown from being a niche interest to a billion-dollar business, has a way of making esoteric historical and futuristic references look entirely contemporary. His job, he says, is 'to stimulate the eye. If you want to create a classic, first you have to make something new.'
Ghesquière, who is contracted to Louis Vuitton until 2028, stands out as a beacon of stability in an industry in flux. Calm and smiling even minutes before the show, he said he was looking forward to the next Paris fashion week, which will be packed with designer debuts. 'October will be really exciting. Fashion is exploding. Fashion should always be about change,' he said.

Jeju Island has long been a place of allure, some calling it the "Hawaii of Korea," while others have been enchanted by its set-jetting charms through the long list of K-pop dramas set there. Known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes (from Hallasan National Park to Cheonjeyeon Falls), unique culinary scene (Jeju Black pork, anyone?), and quirky culture (like a teddy bear museum!), the South Korean island is a rare destination that's a triple threat of UNESCO sites, inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2007, as well as a Biosphere Reserve in 2002 and Global Geopark in 2015. To showcase all of its natural assets, the Jeju World Natural Heritage Village Preservation Association is bringing back its World Heritage Festival from July 4 to July 22. While the purpose of the sixth edition of this event is to 'promote the universal value and significance of Jeju Island's UNESCO-listed natural heritage sites,' for locals and travelers alike, it's also a chance to see the sites like never before, according to Korea JoongAng Daily. Throughout the 19-day event, the UNESCO-honored Hallasan Natural Reserve, Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, and Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone will all be thrust into the spotlight, while the opening ceremony and performances throughout the celebration will highlight the area's cultural traditions. Perhaps the most unique aspect of the festival are special expeditions that invite visitors inside sections of the sites that are usually off limits. This year's programming includes tours of the geological wonders of the Gimnyeonggul and Bengdwigul lava tubes, both part of the Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, which UNESCO said is "regarded as the finest lava tube system of caves anywhere, with its multicolored carbonate roofs and floors and dark-colored lava walls.' Another festival highlight is the walking tour following the lava path, divided into three sections, starting with following the road carved by lava, then a cave section before reaching a stone section that represents new life, including limestone formations and endemic plants in forested areas, a true immersive journey through the volcanic flow. Other events include Hallasan hikes, including the night sunrise hike through the natural reserve, forums with global leaders, and a heritage village to enjoy 'tours, experiences, and performances, and hear the rough, special, and honest stories of people who were born and raised in this World Heritage site,' the festival site explained.

Kevin Smith Is Very Excited About His Idea for ‘Dogma 2'

The 'Clerks,' 'Mallrats,' and 'Red State' director has cracked the idea for the long-awaited sequel. If it feels like you've been hearing about Kevin Smith's Dogma a lot in recent weeks, that's by design. Though the film's 25th anniversary was last year, writer and director Kevin Smith took his time with it, prepping a massive national tour of the film that's been happening for a few months now. It's also being re-released into select theaters starting today. The jewel of that celebration, though, was a screening at the Cannes Film Festival last month and there, Smith spoke about how he's finally got an idea to go back to the world of Mooby's and the Buddy Christ for Dogma 2. 'I cracked the story,' Smith told Deadline. 'I absolutely love it. I feel like when people see it, they'll be like, 'Oh, I get it,' like 'that makes sense' kind of thing. Hopefully they'll be like, 'that's clever' and not be like, 'Well shit, I would have done that.'' Smith, of course, didn't say what his idea was, but did hint that it has a place in it for everyone in the original movie. That, presumably, includes stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Linda Fiorentino, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, and others. 'I will set a place at the table for everyone who was in the first movie who is still alive,' Smith said. 'Sadly, Alan [Rickman] and George [Carlin] won't be able to join us, but I'll set a place at the table for all of them. If they want to come back, they'll have a role to play, but if not, no harm, no foul. The story I'm telling can definitely make use of everybody who is in Dogma, but I can also tell it without. So, that makes me pretty excited to go forward. It's its own unique tale.' Though Smith's career has shifted in recent years, with a focus on smaller, weirder movies like Tusk, Yoga Hosers, and The 4:30 Movie, he knows that if he does decide to make a Dogma sequel, he can't do so lightly. 'It's like one of the last fucking movies I ever made that's beloved across the boards and shit like that,' he said. 'I would never step up to the plate unless I was like, 'Oh, this will fucking work nicely as a companion piece.' So, I feel pretty great about it, man. But of course during the whimsy stage one always feels great about it. It's when you make it and everyone sees it and they're like, 'Well, that fucking sucks. You should have left well enough alone.' You just hope it doesn't come to that.' Finally, Smith's ultimate ambition with Dogma 2 would be to debut it at Cannes, where he debuted the original in 1999 and where he screened it again in 2025 to a very enthusiastic crowd. ''Why is it that you assume that the Cannes-worthy portion of your life is over?'' Smith asked himself. ''You never even expected it to begin in the first place. It was never part of the aim. It just came along with the journey. Maybe if you really try, you could.' So, it was the 78th edition this year and so I was like, 'You know what? I wanna come back on the 80th, or the 81st at the latest with the Dogma sequel, like that's a Cannes-worthy movie.' And so, I said that on stage when I was intro-ing and everybody applauded, and [festival director] Thierry Frémaux was on stage with me, and he adds, 'If it is good,' and I was like, 'Fair enough, if it's good, yes.'' Can Smith turn that idea into a script and get it funded? He's done it in recent years with Jay and Silent Bob as well as Clerks. So, as the stars of Dogma might say, you've just got to have faith. Commentary As many performing arts companies struggle financially in uncertain economic times, Shen Yun Performing Arts has completed its 18th global tour earlier this month, performing what it calls a historic run of 799 shows in 199 cities across 26 countries to an audience of more than 1 million people. Shen Yun not only has to overcome the financial challenges the industry faces, but also faces ongoing sabotage attempts by the communist regime in China. This includes threats directed at theaters, performers, and their families in China and warnings of economic and diplomatic reprisals in locations where Shen Yun performs. Additionally, there are issues with online disinformation and gross misrepresentations by various media outlets. How does a performing arts company presenting traditional Chinese culture today survive and flourish when facing such challenges? Performing Arts in the West In the post-COVID-19 pandemic arts landscape, traditional performing arts productions, such as ballet and classical music, are under increasing pressure to remain financially viable. Australia's largest performing arts companies, Opera Australia and the Australian Ballet, have each posted recent losses, despite receiving significant government grants. The Paris Opera Ballet, the world's oldest national ballet company, receives government subsidies to ensure financial stability. What Sets Shen Yun Apart? Shen Yun is a nonprofit organization established in New York in 2006. Its success is almost entirely funded by ticket sales and limited donations, not government grants or corporate sponsorships. Evan Ning/The Epoch Times Shen Yun's mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture, which has been decimated by the impact of communism in China for more than 70 years, and share these inspirational stories with the world. The traditional values displayed on stage are not an act—performers aim to embody these principles each day. Most artists practice Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, a spiritual and meditation practice with teachings centered on truth, compassion, and forbearance. After being introduced to the Chinese public in 1992 by Mr. Li Hongzhi, Falun Gong's popularity grew exponentially, reaching at least 70 million by the decade's end, according to official estimates. Fearing that the popularity of Falun Gong would threaten its authoritarian rule, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched a brutal persecution campaign to eradicate the practice in July 1999. The persecution continues today, including the killing of practitioners to harvest their organs for the state-run organ transplant industry in military and civilian hospitals. Media, Negativity, and Truth Media outlets that intentionally publish sensational, one-sided articles attacking Shen Yun and Falun Gong ignore the harmful impact on millions of practitioners, including those suffering persecution in China. Psychological research has identified an inherent negativity bias in human beings. It relates to survival mechanisms developed thousands of years ago, where identifying danger or negative threats was essential and could be a matter of life or death. The impact of negativity bias on our decision-making is well understood in the media and politics today. Negative news draws greater attention and can be perceived as believable or truthful. Negative information can lead people to vote against a candidate. If people are not mindful, they can be swayed to accept what is good as something bad or to be avoided. Negative media reporting in the United States is part of Beijing's campaign, In contrast, the Paris Opera Ballet, which has rigorous professional standards similar to Shen Yun, and a modest pay rate (as of 2020) for a full-time entry-level dancer of 2,000 euros per month (around $2,280), does not attract such negative media attention. This distinction lies in its focus on European culture, which isn't seen as a threat by the CCP. CCP's Fear of Shen Yun The CCP knows it does not have the support of the will of the Chinese people. In transforming itself from a 'revolutionary' to a 'ruling' party, it has killed tens of millions in its drive to replace traditional Chinese culture with communist culture. This dissolves the CCP's illusory claim to represent Chinese civilization, and that 'China' and the party are inseparable. Communism and Secularism Some Western media seem to take their reporting cues from the propaganda used by the CCP to demonize and persecute Falun Gong. There is nothing 'Chinese' about the Communist Party. It has been an invasive form of foreign interference in China since 1921, and, like a pandemic, it has contaminated China and the world with its Marxist–Leninist ideology that declares religions are human creations, denies the possibility of life after death, and the existence of God or a Creator. Over the past 50 years, the importance of religious belief has declined in the West, accompanied by a rise in secular thought. While secularism provides for the reasonable separation of church and state, it can also include philosophical elements that reject religion and align with communist atheist ideology that interpret life solely through a focus on the material world. A focus on materialism and 'self' in the West has led to a sense of isolation from the totality of being human—body, mind, and spirit—and can lead to depression as life may appear random or even meaningless. Chinese traditional culture emphasizes the unity between Heaven and Man and the intrinsic value and spiritual essence of every human being. NTD 'Through this rich and most captivating performance, you [Shen Yun] offer a beautiful and spiritual message to the wider society, which is of the utmost importance in our current days,' Archbishop Makarios wrote in the March 3 'This testimony of cultural and spiritual revival is not only paramount for the people of China, but it sends a pertinent message to the whole world. 'It is through the artistic exploration of faith, love, hope, and unity that the audience is able to contemplate such virtues of which the contemporary world seeks not only to deny but to systematically reject.' The message of hope and kindness that Shen Yun brings to the world is a universal blessing; its audiences truly appreciate it, regardless of their political or religious orientation.
