Michael Fassbender says he blew his James Bond audition – by recommending Daniel Craig
Michael Fassbender blew any chance he might have had of playing 007 when he recommended another actor for the iconic role – Daniel Craig.
Speaking on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, released Thursday, the Irish actor recalled meeting with James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli and auditioning for the role. During the meeting, Fassbender dropped Craig's name into conversation.
'I don't know why I was promoting him, I should have been promoting myself,' he joked, though he also told podcast host Josh Horowitz that he never really believed himself to be 'in the mix' for the part.
The month of March brings an influx of movies. Rick Damigella runs down ten films heading to theaters. Craig, who went on to make his debut as the MI6 spy in 'Casino Royale' in 2006, became the face of the Bond franchise for five films.
'Obviously, Daniel did a fantastic job,' said Fassbender, adding that he thinks Craig 'went on to be the most successful Bond in history.'
The 'Inglourious Basterds' and '12 Years a Slave' star admitted that auditions haven't always been his strong suit. 'I was terrible at auditions,' he said of his Bond experience.
Sharing another flashback to an audition gone wrong, Fassbender said he got lost on his way to an audition for 'Mad Max: Fury Road.' After arriving an hour late, he was 'not in the correct headspace' and described an 'excruciating' audition. The lead role ultimately went to Tom Hardy, who was two years below Fassbender in drama school.
Asked if he thought there was any prospect of his playing Bond in the future, Fassbender was downbeat. 'I think it's over,' he said.
But he didn't hesitate to make another recommendation for who could be next at the wheel of the famous Aston Martin, suggesting his 'Black Bag' co-star and 'Bridgerton' actor Regé-Jean Page could be a 'frontrunner' for the role.
Fassbender still gets to be a spy, though, starring alongside Page and Cate Blanchett in 'Black Bag,' in which he plays a secret agent.

James Bond actor makes surprise return as iconic villain
Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen is reprising one of his best-known roles in a unique collaboration between the James Bond franchise and the Hitman video game series. The 59-year-old will be voicing Le Chiffre, the character he played in 2006's Casino Royale, in Hitman: World of Assassination where he will be a target for the game's protagonist, the professional hitman Agent 47. The news was announced by video game developers IO Interactive, the company behind Hitman and the new James Bond origins game 007 First Light, at Summer Game Fest 2025. However, unlike his scene-stealing moments in Casino Royale, which included torturing a nude Daniel Craig, Le Chiffre will be the one trying to stay alive as gamers hunt him down as he hides out in Paris. The character will appear as a new 'Elusive Target' in an update for the game and will be available across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 from 6 June until 6 July. As per the event's description: 'Mads Mikkelsen returns as Le Chiffre, the iconic private banker to the criminal underworld, known for his mastery of games of chance and probability. 'A recent failed venture left him in dire straits, losing vast sums of both legitimate and illicit capital, and in a desperate bid to recover, he has arranged a high-stakes poker game at the Casino Monarchique in Paris. Agent 47 has been tasked with infiltrating the perilous event and will have to find his way to his target to prevent havoc being wreaked across the world.' HITMAN and 007 are coming together in a very unexpected way… yep Agent 47's next target is Le Chiffre! @007GameIOI #SummerGameFest — Summer Game Fest (@summergamefest) June 6, 2025 Mikkelsen also made a special appearance at the event, which was being broadcast from the YouTube Theatre in Inglewood, California, where he spoke of his excitement at returning to the role. 'This is a role, I've had a lot of love for this character, it means a lot to me,' said the Hannibal star. 'So when I got the chance to step into the shoes of Le Chiffre again, I didn't hesitate. But this time is a little different. He's more confident, he's dangerous, he's not just a brilliant mind hiding behind a desk. He's visceral, unpredictable and ruthless, and this time, he doesn't outsource the violence any more." It comes after Mikkelsen told Vulture in 2021, that he and Craig almost went too far when filming the infamous torture scene in Casino Royale. According to Mikkelsen, one idea the pair concocted was that Le Chiffre 'actually cut [Bond] up somewhere, and he had to suffer with that for a while'. The actor added: 'At a certain point, director Martin Campbell was just smiling and said, 'Boys, come back to the table. This is a Bond film. We can't go there.' 'We were lost in our indie world, right? You have to respect that. It is a Bond film. That's the framework you need to understand.'

‘Say Nothing' star Anthony Boyle on playing IRA activist Brendan Hughes: We ‘get to the humanity as opposed to the mythology'
Portraying a real person in Say Nothing was "a great honor," Anthony Boyle tells Gold Derby about his role as renowned Irish activist Brendan Hughes. "This one felt really special, because it was so close to home. I used to walk past the mural of Brendan Hughes coming back from school, and you'd hear folk songs about the guy." Say Nothing was created by Joshua Zetumer, based on Patrick Radden Keefe's acclaimed nonfiction book Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland. Set during the height of the Troubles, the nine-part drama follows Belfast sisters Dolours Price (Lola Petticrew) and Marian Price (Hazel Doupe) as they become deeply entangled in the IRA's militant campaign. At the center of the story is the 1972 abduction and murder of Jean McConville, a widowed mother of 10, through which the series explores the emotional and ethical fallout of political violence. Boyle stars as the younger version of Hughes, a central figure during the Troubles as the officer commanding of the Belfast Brigade, leading significant operations including the 1980 hunger strike and the Bloody Friday bombings in 1972. "It's interesting, man. There's a great clip of a British army officer talking about him, and he says that 'we had the full might of the British army trying to chase down Brendan, and he just stood there in a dinner jacket and a handgun shooting back at us. You couldn't help but admire the plucky little bugger,'" he recalls. FX "They still have admiration for him. I think it just goes to show you the kind of guy he was terms of the whole charisma thing. I sort of based him off himself, obviously, and I've got an uncle called Snake who is really charismatic and really good at telling stories. You know, when you're with him in the bar, he's got this real magnetic quality. He pulls everyone, and he's got this real way speaking. I grew up in Belfast, and I would drink in the same bars that Brendan would drink in, and I know there's people that he knew," Boyle says. "This one for me felt like a very natural fit." The Northern Irish actor's performance has earned acclaim for its emotional depth, charting Hughes' journey from fervent idealist to a disillusioned figure haunted by the personal and political consequences of his actions. Boyle's layered interpretation adds profound weight to the series' examination of the human cost of political violence. "When someone dies, particularly if they're a soldier, they become mythologized and there's a sort of martyrdom around them, and there's murals of them on the wall, and they're painted and revered. And when I spoke with Josh Finan, who played Gerry Adams, it was about stripping a lot of that back," Boyle explains. "They're not paintings on the wall, they're real breathing people, and if we want to do them justice, if we want to do the story justice, you've got to bring it down and get to the humanity of them as opposed to the mythology of them."
