French league launches own channel to broadcast Ligue 1
An agreement was struck for a "TV and digital platform entirely dedicated to Ligue 1" following a meeting of club presidents, the LFP's board of directors and representatives of its commercial arm, LFP Media.
The new channel will show eight of nine matches each weekend, with Qatar's beIN Sports keeping the rights to broadcast the remaining game.
Clubs in April voted for the large part in favour of ending the previous deal with streaming platform DAZN after a breakdown in relations between the two parties. It had only been agreed last July, a couple of weeks before the 2024-25 season started.
That arrangement promised Ligue 1 clubs just 400 million euros ($471 million) a year.
Adding in other deals, including with international broadcasters, the French league was still far short of its stated ambition of bringing in one billion euros annually from TV.
As a result, Ligue 1's TV deal last season was down on its previous contract, leaving France trailing even further behind Europe's biggest leagues — the Premier League's upcoming domestic rights deal for the next four years is valued at 2.02 billion euros per season. —

Rugby-New Zealand's Sititi out of Rugby Championship opener v Argentina
FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Autumn International - England v New Zealand - Allianz Stadium Twickenham, London, Britain - November 2, 2024 New Zealand's Wallace Sititi in action with England's Ollie Lawrence Action Images via Reuters/Paul Childs/File Photo (Reuters) -New Zealand loose forward Wallace Sititi has been ruled out of the Rugby Championship opener against Argentina while still recovering from ankle surgery, coach Scott Robertson said on Tuesday. Sititi, who was the All Blacks Player of the Year in his debut 2024 season, missed the entire France series with the injury and had hoped to be back for Saturday's match in Cordoba. He faces at least another week on the sidelines, though, opening the door for a potential recall for Peter Lakai or a debut for Simon Parker. Robertson, who names his squad on Thursday, may opt for continuity in the starting back row, though, having deployed enforcer Ardie Savea at number eight and Du'Plessis Kirifi at openside flanker in the third and final test against France after Luke Jacobson was a late withdrawal due to injury. The All Blacks won that match 29-19 in Hamilton to whitewash the French 3-0. New Zealand have lost three out of their last 10 matches to the Pumas, including last year's Rugby Championship clash in Wellington, but have never been beaten in Argentina in 40 years of tests against the South Americans. Robertson said the 38-30 upset in Wellington was on the minds of his players. "They're a team with a lot of experience, a lot of them play in Europe, they're really well coached, and they play with passion," he told reporters of Argentina. 'Anyone can beat anyone on the night, you've got to be at your best - every game. That's the exciting part of this tour." (Reporting by Ian Ransom in Melbourne; Editing by Stephen Coates)

Turtles turn the tide after coach Badrul's halftime call
PETALING JAYA: A simple halftime reminder proved the spark for Terengganu's dominant 3-0 win over Penang in their Super League opener on Sunday. In a rain-soaked encounter at the City Stadium in Georgetown, the first half was lively but goalless, with the Turtles carving out numerous openings through French striker Yan Mabella and Brazilian winger Gabriel Silva. Penang goalkeeper Khairulazhan Khalid produced a string of excellent saves, while both teams were denied potential penalties by referee Khairulsyahmi Ahmad Khalidi. At the break, Terengganu coach Badrul Afzan Razali kept his message clear – be patient. 'I reminded the boys to be a bit more patient in the second half. 'We had the ball, so we just needed to make quick attacks and play the right through passes. 'We worked well as a unit and deserved the win,' said Badrul. The response was instant. Four minutes into the second half, centreback Safwan Mazlan split the defence with a pass to Azam Azmi Murad, who fired low past Khairulazhan. Six minutes later, Mabella found Silva, whose toe-poke made it 2-0. Badrul then rotated his attack to keep players fresh, a move that paid off when substitute Khala'if Naskam scored with his first touch in the 88th minute, latching onto fellow substitute Baqiuddin Shamsuddin's through ball. 'Khala'if came in and scored — it was perfect for us,' Badrul said. The win gave Terengganu a flying start to their campaign, while Penang coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail admitted his side 'lost rhythm' after the interval. Terengganu next host Police in Gong Badak tomorrow, while Penang face Melaka in Hang Jebat.

Palace's Europa League demotion would 'devalue the competition', says keeper Henderson
LONDON: Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson said that the club's drop from the Europa League would "devalue the competition", as they await the Court of Arbitration for Sport's (CAS) decision on their appeal against UEFA's ruling in a multi-club ownership case. Palace were demoted to the Conference League, the third-tier European competition, by UEFA's Club Financial Control Body in July because John Textor, president of the Eagle Football Group, majority owners of Olympique Lyonnais, also has a controlling stake in the London club. Ligue 1 club Lyon, which also qualified for the second-tier continental competition, was allowed to compete. Palace have appealed to CAS against UEFA's decision to remove them from the Europa League, with a closed-door hearing taken place on August 8. A decision is expected on Monday. "We win the FA Cup, we are justified to be in the Europa League," Henderson told BBC Radio 5 Live after leading Palace to a FA Community Shield victory over Premier League champions Liverpool on Sunday. "For football purposes, we deserve to be in the Europa League. I think it would devalue the competition unfortunately if we weren't in the Europa League." Palace said in June that New York Jets co-owner Robert Wood "Woody" Johnson had signed a legally binding agreement to buy Eagle Football Holding's stake in the club. Palace, however, missed the March deadline to comply with the multi-club ownership rules before winning the FA Cup in May to earn their place in European competition. "I know the chairman (Steve Parish) has fought hard against it and fingers crossed we are in the Europa League like we deserve to be...," Henderson, 28, said. "I am sure they will see sense and put us back in the Europa League." --REUTERS
