James Wade holds off Gian van Veen to reach Matchplay semi-finals
After winning eight consecutive legs to lead 9-4, the 42-year-old Englishman had to withstand a Van Veen fightback before crossing the finishing line.

'I thought I'd thrown it away,' Wade told Sky Sports after reaching his 10th Matchplay semi-final.
'He was quite weak early on in the game, I just thought I'd pummel him now and I couldn't do it.
'Towards the end he was coming back and it was God's gift to me (winning), not my ability. That is for sure.
'I was disgusted (with the start) but he didn't make the most of his opportunities. I'm just so happy now, I'm buzzing.
'I was so nervous, it was awful. I was tight and anxious and I don't need to be because I can play darts.'
There was a 19-year age gap between the pair, with Wade having made his made his television debut at the 2003 BDO World Championship eight months after Van Veen was born.
But it was the experienced Wade who began nervously in missing his first 11 darts at a double – the same number as his total of missed doubles in 28 legs in beating Joe Cullen and Wessel Nijman – and Van Veen capitalised in the opening mini-session.
The Machine looked bemused at his malfunctioning on the big stage, but the first break did him a power of good.

Wade rattled off the next eight legs with his heavy scoring putting the 2024 world youth champion under enormous pressure.
Van Veen recovered from that assault to trade legs, but breaking rather than holding was what was required from his perspective and Wade kept him at bay.
The Dutchman finally broke to get within two legs at 13-11 and had two darts at double 16 to move to within one.
But Van Veen slipped wide of the wire and Wade held on for another marvellous Blackpool memory 18 years on from capturing the title.

Jonny Clayton will meet Wade in Saturday's semi-final after a comfortable 16-7 victory over Stephen Bunting.
The Ferret was out of the traps fast to whitewash Bunting 5-0 in the first mini-session, averaging over 110 and decorating his domination with a 160 checkout in the third leg.
Welshman Clayton never looked back and coasted home.
'Stephen didn't play his best game but I kept him under pressure and I played well,' said Clayton, the 2023 Matchplay finalist, after recording two 11-dart legs.
'I didn't expect to be 5-0 ahead, but I knew I had to attack and I'm so pleased to get over that finish line.'

George Russell on verge of landing £30m-a-year mega deal with Mercedes as F1 rival Verstappen set to stay at Red Bull

The British driver has been hashing out talks with Merc over the last few weeks, with just the final details to be fine tuned. It is likely to be later though as Russell's team go over the details of the new deal. Mercedes had been keeping tabs on Verstappen but the Dutchman is set to stay put at Red Bull for 2026. Following Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix he is now unable to activate a release clause that relied on him being outside the top three by the summer break. Verstappen is third in the standings 28 points ahead of George Russell in fourth after winning the sprint race in Spa and coming fourth in Sunday's Grand Prix. The Dutchman and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton are the highest earners on the grid on around £60m-a-year. Meanwhile Russell's new deal will see him roughly on par with McLaren's Lando Norris and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Mercedes suffered a disappointing run in Spa with Russell finishing fifth and Kimi Anontelli coming in 16th. Frustrated Russell slammed the team's weekend and said crunch talks would be held this week to get to the bottom of the team's woes. Nico Rosberg in frosty exchange with Jos Verstappen over Christian Horner after Red Bull sacking He said: 'We really need to understand what is going on and why we've taken such a step backwards because these conditions (in Spa) are ideal for us and our car. 'It's been the worst performance of the season so we're going to have a big sit-down this week and try and figure it out. 'We need to sit down as a team. It may be as simple as reserving back to some of the old changes we've made. But in F1 it's never that simple. 'The car isn't feeling as nice to drive at the moment as it once did. Lacking rear stability. 'Kimi and I are collectively making more mistakes because the car is more challenging to drive. It seems quite strange how we've gone so far backwards.'

‘I can't believe that' – James Wade breaks etiquette in Luke Littler clash leaving darts fans fuming
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JAMES WADE shocked fans by walking off the World Matchplay stage and choosing not to conduct a live post-final Sky Sports interview. The Machine was beaten 18-13 by sensational Luke Littler, the reigning world champion, on Sunday night in Blackpool. The etiquette, but not protocol, is for the runners-up to receive their trophy on stage and then hang around to speak to the host broadcaster. In this case it would have been with the excellent reporter Polly James for Sky. Yet emotion clearly got the better of Wade who, once he received his silver plate off PDC chief executive Matt Porter, swiftly left the oche and went backstage. READ MORE IN DARTS LUKE OF LOVE Littler plants kiss on girlfriend Faith, 19, during World Matchplay walk-on It surprised TV viewers who were treated to an interview with Littler but not with the 42-year-old Aldershot ace, a father of two. It means, quite unusually, there were not quotes from Wade about how he played or what perhaps he could have done differently. Littler's victory, aged 18, means he replaced Wade in the history books as the youngest winner of the World Matchplay, one of the most coveted events on the calendar. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS There are no suggestions that Wade, the new world No.5, will be fined or reprimanded for his actions as there is no obligation to speak. Yet it is good form and good manners to speak to the fans and live TV audience. Or even hang around as Littler celebrated lifting the Phil Taylor Trophy in front of the Winter Gardens audience. This is exactly what Wade – a 11-time major winner – did when he lost in the UK Open showpiece occasion at Butlin's Minehead earlier this year. Once this event, which was broadcast on ITV, was over, he spoke glowingly about the teenager that had just destroyed him on the oche. Wade said back on the night of Sunday March 2: 'I'm the senior dart player, but he absolutely smashed me to bits! 'What can you do against that? He was the far superior player. Fair play to Luke. At the moment, he is comfortably the best or second best dart player in the world.' You wonder if his decision to walk away early will impact his chances of being selected by the PDC for the Premier League Darts competition in 2026. 5 Wade was surpassed as the youngest World Matchplay champion by 18-year-old Littler Credit: Getty 5 The Machine is one of the legends of the sport and is now up to No.5 in the world rankings Credit: Getty That is, of course, unless he breaks into the top four spots in the Order of Merit, in which case he would be an automatic pick for next year's Prem. His absence from the stage as the ticker-tape fell on Littler's head surprised fans, James O'Hara expressed his displeasure on social media by saying: 'I can't believe Wade left the stage before Littler even lifted the trophy!' Disappointed Tom Clayton wrote a sarcastic message on X, which said: 'Nice to see Wade stay on stage to watch Littler lift the trophy. Not! Piss poor that.' And darts fan Craig Milner commented: 'Walking off stage before Littler gets his trophy says it all about him. Bit of a p****. Well done the Nuke!' Littler – who has completed the Triple Crown set – posed for photos with his parents, management and new girlfriend Faith.

Why Max Verstappen can't join Mercedes despite Red Bull exit clause
If Max Verstappen was hoping to leave Red Bull for Mercedes in 2026, he'll be disappointed as that option is no longer on the table. The future of the four-time Formula 1 champion has been up in the air for some time, with Red Bull unable to build a car to challenge for the title this season. While Verstappen has still picked up two wins this year, following Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix he is 81 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri, with McLaren teammate Lando Norris the only one who can realistically challenge him. Speculation has ramped up in recent weeks after Mercedes boss Toto Wolff revealed he was in talks with the Dutchman over a blockbuster move to the Silver Arrows. Moreover, team principal Christian Horner was dismissed from his role by Red Bull, though Verstappen has since said his exit will not have any bearing on his own future. Throughout the entire saga, it has been known that there is a performance-related release clause in Verstappen's contract which runs until 2028. The 27-year-old was allowed to end his contract early and sign for a rival team, if he was outside of the top-three in the standings come F1's summer break. Verstappen is currently third in the championship, with fourth-placed George Russell 28 points behind and this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix is the final race before the break However, with 25 the maximum number of points up for grabs at the Hungaroring, Verstappen is guaranteed to remain in the top-three, so his release clause will not become active. More Trending This does not rule out the transfer entirely, as the driver or Mercedes could buy out the remainder of his Red Bull contract, but given the huge expense required to do so, it is not under consideration. Instead, Mercedes are expected to stick with their current line-up of Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli, both of whom are out of contract at the end of 2025. According to the Daily Mail, an announcement is not expected before the Hungarian Grand Prix but Russell is very close to putting pen to paper on a new multi-year, £30million-a-season deal. After a strong start to his F1 career, Antonelli's form has dropped off, scoring points in just one of the last seven races, but the 18-year-old's potential is clear to see and he should keep his seat. Russell finished fifth in Belgium but was far from happy with the pace of his Mercedes car, telling Sky Sports: 'It was pretty underwhelming, to be honest. 'Because we tend to favour the cooler conditions. So we couldn't have really asked for better weather for us. But we've just had no pace recently. We need to sit down, all of us. 'We're going to have a big meeting this week with all the designers and engineers. To sort of understand the decisions we've made in recent weeks or months. And why we've gone backwards. So hoping for some improvements in Hungary. 'P5 was probably flattering the real pace of the car, so I'm at least happy we got the maximum possible. We made a clear change of direction a couple of months ago, and I think it's been since that point we've taken a step backwards. 'It sometimes takes a few races to understand what the real reasons are for that lack of pace, but clearly it seems that we need to revert back to what we had earlier in the season.'
