Dwayne Johnson, is that you? See his dramatic new look as UFC fighter Mark Kerr in ‘The Smashing Machine' trailer

CNN30-04-2025

Dwayne Johnson is soon heading to theaters in what might be the most dramatic role of his career so far.
In 'The Smashing Machine,' Johnson will play MMA and UFC fighter Mark Kerr, who was the subject of a 2002 HBO documentary that chronicled his substance abuse and explored the brutality of the sport to which he'd dedicated his life.
The new trailer for 'The Smashing Machine,' released Tuesday by A24, hits on those themes and more, also highlighting Kerr's tumultuous relationship with his girlfriend, played in the film by Johnson's former 'Jungle Cruise' co-star Emily Blunt.
'Winning is the best feeling in the word,' Johnson as Kerr says in the trailer. 'It's 40,000 people in there cheering you on. There's no other high like it in the world.'
Though he has yet to speak specifically about his physical transformation for the role, Johnson appears to have used facial prosthetics to help him more closely resemble Kerr, whose 12-year career took off in the late '90s.
The new film marks a more dramatic turn from Johnson, who is best known for his high-octane action fare like 'San Andreas,' 'Skyscraper,' and is certainly not what audiences might be accustomed to seeing from him.
That, he told GQ last year, was apparently the point of playing Kerr.
'It was also an opportunity for me, I realized, to stretch myself in ways that I hadn't been stretched yet,' he told the publication. 'And also challenge myself in ways that I hadn't been challenged.'
Johnson's most recent theatrical release was last year's 'Moana 2,' in which he once against lent his voice as Maui.
He has also been more active in the wrestling ring in recent years after making a surprise return to WWE in 2023. Last year, he joined the board of directors for TKO Group Holdings, the company consisting of the recently merged WWE and UFC. Following the WWE's partnership with Netflix, he made a much-hyped appearance at the January debut of WWE Raw on the streaming platform.
'The Smashing Machine,' out October 3, comes from writer/director Benny Safdie, who marks his solo film directorial debut with the movie. He is best known for working alongside his brother Josh, co-directing the acclaimed 'Uncut Gems,' among other films.

Fans Shares The Funniest ‘Inside the NBA' Moments As Show Signs Off TNT For Last Time

Source: Boston Globe / Getty Ernie Johnson is the senior statesman of TNT. The sports personality has been on the network for 35 years, so it was fitting that he was the one who made the final sign-off for the network's Inside the NBA show. The visibly emotional Johnson,68, said, 'If I had written the script, the NBA and TNT would be together forever. It's not going to happen, but while I was disappointed, I was sad, I was not bitter. We know how business works. Gratitude is the operative word for me.' Johnson has reason to be grateful as the longest-running host of the show. He has hosted Inside the NBA since its inception in 1990. Kenny 'The Jet' Smith has the next-longest tenure, joining the show in 1998. Barkley and O'Neal came on in 2000 and 2011, respectively, forming the nucleus that arguably reshaped sports television. The chemistry between the quartet is the best mix on sports television, something that the Sports Emmys have recognized with 21 overall awards. Fox's NFL Sunday is the most comparable show in the NFL, but despite big personalities like Michael Strahan and others, it didn't quite hit the sports and pop culture zeitgeist as strongly as Inside the NBA did. (And this year, it loses longtime hosts Howie Long and Jimmy Johnson.) The combination of chemistry, basketball analysis, hot takes, memes, jokes, pranks, and sometimes disagreements has made it one of the more authentic shows on sports TV, which explains much of its appeal. The show will continue from the same production studio in Atlanta, with the same producers, but will air on ESPN. This move is part of the fallout from TNT losing its broadcast rights to NBC, which will air the NBA again after 24 years. TNT was the NBA's main broadcast partner from 1989 – 2025 and Inside the NBA was a major part of that. 'Even though the name changes, the engine stays the same,' O'Neal said on the last broadcast after the Pacers beat the Knicks in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals to advance to the NBA Finals. 'To that new network we're coming to, we're not coming to f— around. And since it's the last show, I'll say it: We're not coming to f-ck around. We're kicking ass, we're taking names, we're taking over.' Barkley was wooed by other networks, but he ultimately decided to stay with Inside the NBA . He thanked TNT for the 'wonderful ride.' 'I just want to say thank you to the NBA,' he said. 'Every coach I've had, every player I've played with, for giving me this magnificent life that I've had,' he said. 'I am so lucky and blessed. I'm lucky and blessed. And I want to thank TNT. Even though we'll never say TNT Sports again, I want to thank TNT for giving me a magnificent life.' And with that, Johnson signed off for the last time on TNT. 'I'm proud to say, for the last time, 'Thanks for watching us. It's the NBA on TNT.'' WWE Superstar Joaquin Wilde has reassured WWE fans that he is "good, no worries" after a concerning incident where he was knocked out cold during a WWE Speed match taping. The LWO member was wrestling Lexis King in a match taped before the June 2, 2025, episode of Raw when the knockout occurred. Fan footage from the taping showed Wilde down and receiving attention from WWE's medical staff, with the match being stopped. Wilde later took to social media to address the situation directly with his followers. Jimmy Fallon Gives Dakota Johnson a Tissue to Cover Her Cleavage, Jokes He'll Sell It on eBay

Dakota Johnson had some last-minute regrets about her outfit choice on 'The Tonight Show' on Monday night, so Jimmy Fallon provided a quick fix in the form of a tissue. The NBC host then joked that he'd sell it online afterward. The moment came right at the start of Johnson's appearance in support of her new film 'Materialists,' which hits theaters on June 13. As she sat down, she looked downward and uttered 'Oh god' as she seemed to realize her skirt rode up a bit high and the neckline of her top showed a lot, given the angle of the camera. 'This is the wrong outfit,' Johnson said with a chuckle. 'I think it's perfect, just don't move' Fallon replied, prompting Johnson to joke that 'my eyes are up here.' The duo then recalled their experiences with the 'SNL50' celebration, with the actress noting that she wasn't actually in the crowd but got to watch from under the bleachers, where 'SNL' boss Lorne Michaels watches. But, as the conversation progressed, Johnson was once again distracted by how exposed she felt. 'Tell me if there's a problem,' she requested. Fallon swore there wasn't a problem — just 'almost' a problem — but Johnson then jokingly asked for a blanket from anyone in the room to help cover up. So, the comedian offered her the next best thing he had: a tissue. Johnson proceeded to tuck it in and indeed, the tissue covered everything. But, when Fallon lamented ruining her outfit, the actress opted to take the tissue out and handed it back to him. 'Do you want to keep this?' Johnson asked, to which Fallon joked: 'I'm putting this on eBay this evening.' Johnson managed to navigate the rest of the interview without triggering NBC's standards department too much, save for the stray f-bomb. That wasn't the only funny moment between these two stars, though. While talking about the 50th anniversary special, Johnson said she saw her 'Materialists' co-star Pedro Pascal behind the scenes as he was preparing for the 'Domingo: Vow Renewal' sketch. Meryl Streep was also backstage for another sketch, and though Johnson had never met the iconic actress, she said hi. 'She reached for me and kissed my hand,' Johnson shared, earning a theatrical gasp from the studio audience. Watch the full NBC interview above.
