Viewers were treated to an evening hosted by comedian and Brookline native Conan O'Brien, who wasted no time getting silly during his monologue. After O'Brien emerged in a gross scene parodying 'The Substance,' he cleaned up and raced on stage for a nearly 20-minute opener, where he cracked jokes about many of the night's nominees.
But one of the more memorable moments from the monologue came when New Hampshire native Adam Sandler, wearing a hoodie instead of a tux, crashed O'Brien's bit. 'You're dressed like a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m.,' O'Brien joked while addressing the underdressed star in the crowd. The monologue ended with a song-and-dance number by the Bay State native.

‘Wicked: For Good' Will Have More Dorothy Than Expected
Director Jon M. Chu teases how 'The Wizard of Oz' heroine will factor into his musical sequel. Obviously, Dorothy has to enter the Wicked story eventually—the movies are based on the Broadway musical, which is based on the book, which riffs off The Wizard of Oz and its own source-material books. And everyone knows The Wizard of Oz follows Dorothy's journey over the rainbow, where she meets and defeats the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked may show Elphaba's side of the story with a sympathetic eye, but we all know she's on a collision course with a certain bucket of water. Now, Wicked director Jon M. Chu is teasing how that pesky tornado traveler from Kansas will find her way into upcoming sequel Wicked: For Good. Speaking to Vanity Fair in a 'first-look' article timed to Wicked: For Good's trailer (arriving later today), Chu explained how his film will expand Dorothy's role. In the stage musical, she's an implied presence, but she remains hidden behind a scrim. The magazine got an early look at the trailer, however, and reveals that we'll see Dorothy and her famous pals (the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion; presumably Toto's there, too) strolling down the yellow brick road to Oz. 'That intersection is the place that we were first introduced into Oz,' Chu explained of Dorothy's role in For Good. 'We tread lightly, but try to make more sense of how it impacts our girls and our characters than maybe the show does.' However, don't expect Wicked: For Good to be the Dorothy show. 'We're delicate. We're delicate. We're delicate,' Chu emphasized, anticipating that fans of the musical might shudder at the thought of too many changes. Speaking of changes, the profile also gives a few details about the two new songs that will appear in For Good; one for Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba, and one for Ariana Grande's Glinda. And though the first Wicked contained the musical's most famous tunes (including the show-stopping 'Defying Gravity,' which came at the end of the film), Chu insists 'there are some bangers' to come in the sequel. Wicked: For Good hits theaters November 21. Check back on io9 for the much-anticipated first trailer later today.

Cynthia Erivo on Elphaba's evolution in "Wicked" sequel and what to expect as she hosts Tony Awards on Sunday
Cynthia Erivo said her character Elphaba has evolved into a more powerful, self-aware version in the upcoming "Wicked" sequel, describing the green-skinned witch as "a little more knowing" ahead of hosting the 78th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday night. "They are not in school anymore. They are in their power," Erivo said. "I love this part of Elphaba. I call it 'delicious,' and I do feel that strongly. She's just a little more knowing ... The wardrobe is different. The hair is different. Everything is sort of moving toward the maturer version of who she is." Erivo's return to host the Tony Awards marks what she calls "a beautiful full circle moment" for the actress who won a Tony in 2016 for her portrayal of Celie in "The Color Purple." She credited her Broadway work with launching her career and leading to opportunities including her Oscar-nominated performance as Elphaba in the first "Wicked" film. "Because of Broadway and because of the work that we did in 'The Color Purple,' I get to sit with you now where I am and have done all the things that I've done since then," Erivo said. For Sunday's ceremony, Erivo has planned multiple costume changes, but remained secretive about specifics. She said she attended numerous Broadway shows this season in preparation for her hosting duties. Beyond her hosting and film work, Erivo is preparing for an ambitious theatrical project: a one-woman adaptation of "Dracula" in London's West End where she will portray 23 different roles. Despite initial hesitation about the demanding production, she said the concept became impossible to ignore after meeting with the director. Erivo is also releasing an album on Friday titled "I Forgive You" that she co-wrote, featuring vocal arrangements performed entirely by her, including percussion and rap elements. She said the album is "a full realization of who I am as a musician, as a singer, as a vocalist and as a person who loves music in general." The 78th Annual Tony Awards will take place this Sunday, June 8, 2025, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. You can watch the on CBS and stream live on Paramount+ .
