China, India pledge to resume flights as Beijing's top diplomat wraps up visit
BEIJING: China and India announced they would restart direct flights in a string of diplomatic breakthroughs, state media reported Wednesday (Aug 20), as Beijing's foreign minister wrapped up a visit before heading to Pakistan.
Following Wang Yi's trip to India, Beijing and New Delhi also agreed to advance talks on their disputed border, resume tourism visa issuance and boost trade between the neighbouring countries.
In talks on the border issue with Indian national security adviser Ajit Doval, the two sides agreed to "explore the possibility of advancing boundary demarcation negotiations" and vowed to reopen three border trade markets, according to a Xinhua report Wednesday.
Relations between the world's two most populous countries soured after a deadly border clash in 2020.
But a thaw began last October when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping for the first time in five years at a summit in Russia.
Modi will travel to China later in August -- his first visit since 2018.
Wang is now due in Pakistan, India's arch-rival and one of China's closest partners in the region.
"Both India and Pakistan are China's important neighbours. We are willing to enhance friendly cooperation with both countries, and hope that differences between these two countries can be handled properly", foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a regular press conference Tuesday.
She described China and Pakistan as "ironclad friends and all-weather strategic partners".
China has poured tens of billions of dollars into Pakistan to fund massive transport, energy and infrastructure projects -- part of Beijing's transnational Belt and Road scheme.
Islamabad used Chinese-made military hardware, including jets, against India during a four-day conflict in May that killed more than 70 people.
The conflict was sparked by an attack on tourists by gunmen in Indian-administered Kashmir that New Delhi accused Islamabad of backing -- a charge it denies.
Kashmir is claimed in full by both India and Pakistan, which have fought several wars over the Muslim-majority region since their 1947 independence from British rule.
Wang said that China supported Islamabad in defending "national sovereignty and territorial integrity", in talks with Pakistan's Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar in May, days after Islamabad and New Delhi agreed a ceasefire.
Wang is due in Pakistan until Friday and will meet with Dar for the sixth round of China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers' Strategic Dialogue, China's foreign ministry said Tuesday. - AFP

UNIFIL, Lebanese army discover Hezbollah tunnels in S. Lebanon
BEIRUT, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the Lebanese army discovered two Hezbollah military tunnels in separate areas of southern Lebanon on Wednesday, according to Lebanese sources. Since Nov. 27, 2024, a U.S.- and French-brokered ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel has formally been in effect, ending more than a year of cross-border clashes. The agreement stipulated Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon, but the Israeli army has maintained several posts along the border and continues to launch attacks, citing "threats" from Hezbollah. On Monday, the Israeli army reportedly established a new military post in the border region of southern Lebanon.

Namibia targets shift from raw fish exports to seafood economy
WINDHOEK, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Namibian government plans to transform its fishing industry from a raw materials exporter into a comprehensive seafood economy, an official revealed on Wednesday. Speaking during a consultation with fishing industry leaders in the port city of Walvis Bay, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform Inge Zaamwani said the initiative forms part of the country's new National Development Plan and seeks to raise the share of locally processed catch from 23 percent to 45 percent within five years. The move is expected to create 15,000 new permanent jobs in processing operations, reduce raw fish exports by 60 percent, and drive the development of new high-value seafood products for international markets, she said. To achieve this, the government will implement mandatory processing requirements for all fishing quota holders, she said, urging industry stakeholders to partner with the government in this national effort. She also noted that the sector's contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) declined from 4.5 percent in 2023 to 4.1 percent in 2024. "This reduction is largely attributed to continued decreases in the total allowable catches across key commercial species such as hake and horse mackerel," she explained. "To mitigate the unintended consequences of high levels of bycatch, the ministry is committed to enforcing stricter regulations and enhancing compliance with the recently announced 2 percent bycatch thresholds," she said, adding that the bycatch fee rate will also be increased from 15 to 50 percent. Zaamwani also announced stepped-up measures to curb illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing along Namibia's maritime borders, particularly in the north, including the introduction of new monitoring technologies and joint patrols with the Ministry of Defense and the Namibian Police Force. The fishing sector remains a major contributor to Namibia's economy, supporting GDP, exports, value addition, and employment.

According to the KPK, the main factor contributing to this is the specific characteristics and functions of Malaysian palm oil which has been certified sustainable through the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification, making it difficult to replace with other oils in the global market. 'Therefore, the level of industry dependence in the US on sustainable palm-based materials is high,' the ministry said on the parliament website in reply to a question from Kamal Ashaari (PN-Kuala Krau) on the government's short- and medium-term plan for the palm oil industry to adapt to the US market. In 2024, Malaysia exported 191,231 tonnes of palm oil to the US. This value was only 1.1 per cent of the country's total palm oil exports for the year. At the same time, the KPK said the government remains committed to providing various forms of aid, particularly for smallholders. Among which are the Oil Palm Smallholders Replanting Financing Incentive Programme as well as special grants such as the supply of products for the control of ganoderma stem rot disease to assist smallholders.
