Pump Up The Posh: Three Ways To Do Istanbul In Style

Forbes16-07-2025
Sprawling across the shores of two continents, Istanbul occupies one of the world's most spectacular ... More locations.
With more than 18 million visitors each year, Istanbul has emerged as one of the world's most popular urban destinations.
And rightfully so.
From world-famous landmarks like Hagia Sophia and the Topkapi Palace to exquisite Turkish cuisine, exotic shopping and waterfront landscapes that rivals Sydney and San Francisco, the metropolis on the Bosporus is truly stunning.
The challenge is how to explore Istanbul in the utmost style. If money is no object, what are the best ways to stay, eat and move around? Read on to find out . . .

Sleep in a Palace
The Ottoman Empire may have faded away a century ago, but the Bosporus waterway is still flanked by palaces once occupied by sultans and their families or high-ranking courtiers.
What does one do with an extravagant structure that no longer hosts royal residents? You transform it into a luxury hotel, of course.
Like the Çırağan Palace, which now serves as the all-suite wing of the Kempinski Istanbul along the waterfront of the Yıldız neighborhood. Originally constructed in the 1860s for Sultan Abdulaziz, the flamboyant wood-and-marble structure was later gutted by fire but reincarnated in the 1990s as a luxury hotel. Paying homage to the past, the design reflects the European-inspired, over-the-top style of the late Ottoman period.
The über-elegant Peninsula Istanbul sprawls through four buildings on the Karaköy waterfront including two historic Ottoman structures and the old Yolcu Salonu steamship terminal, a Bauhaus-style building opened in 1940. There's plenty to love about this five-star abode, from an atrium lobby lounge and restaurant where seagoing passengers once took their first steps in Istanbul to the waterfront infinity pool, a private motor yacht for Bosporus tours, and an 'Academy' program featuring private guided tours with themes like Istanbul 007, Ottoman Art, and Photo Walk. The spacious suites come with views that encompass Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and Asia on the other side of the strait.
Ironically the city's most famous 'palace' was never a royal residence. Opened in 1895, the Pera Palace Hotelwas designed specifically to host passengers arriving in Istanbul aboard a brand-new transcontinental train service called the Orient Express. State of the art for the era, the Pera was the first in Constantinople (as the city was still called in those days) to feature an electric elevator and hot running water. All these years later, it's still a pretty posh place to crash.

Feast Like a Sultan
One of the world's great culinary traditions, Turkish food offers an array of tastes and textures that reflect its position on the cusp of Middle East and Southern Europe. And it doesn't get any better than Istanbul, a crossroads that's been attracting foodies since Roman times.
The problem (if you can call it that) is deciding where to dine among the city's 15,000 restaurants. Yet there are some that stand out among the crowd.
Michelin devotees head for Turk Fatih Tutak, a modern two-star eatery in the high-rise Bomonti neighborhood on the periphery of central Istanbul. Under the guidance of chef/owner Fatih Tutak, the open-plan kitchen creates an ever-changing Micro Seasonal Tasting Menu that reinterprets traditional Turkish recipes in modern ways. This adventure in eating normally lasts around three hours.
At the opposite end of the Istanbul dining spectrum is Pandeli in the Egyptian Spice Bazaar near the Galata Bridge. Opened in 1901 during the waning days of the Ottoman era, the restaurant is renowned for both its vintage blue-and-white décor and traditional dishes like döner kebab, lamb shank, and stuffed vine leaves. Pandeli boasts a single Michelin star. Yet perhaps a better recommendation is a long list of discerning diners that includes Audrey Hepburn, Queen Elizabeth II and Kemal Atatürk.
Another atmospheric eatery is Olden 1772, which occupies the gorgeously restored courtyard of an 18th-century han (caravanserai) near the spice bazaar. Besides what is arguably the most impressive bar in Istanbul, the restaurant is incredibly romantic whether you're dropping in for lunch or dinner or innovative craft cocktails like the Çeşni (Johnnie Walker Black Ruby, black mulberry molasses, lemon juice, Chambord raspberry liqueur and yoghurt cream).
For a deeper dive into vintage Ottoman cuisine, ferry across the Bosporus to Kadıköy and make your way through the warren of fish and produce stalls to Çiya Sofrası. Owner Musa Dağdeviren is both a chef and a culinary detective who scours Türkiye for bygone recipes and ingredients for dishes like Blessed Thistle with Lamb, Veal Shank with Quince, and Wild Purslane with Black-Eyed Peas.
The Turkish version of tapas, mezze reaches heavenly heights at Karaköy Lokantası, a Michelin one-star establishment near the new Galataport development. The super-popular eatery (be sure to make a reservation) offers more than 80 small plates in a chic, modern dining room wrapped in glass and glazed tiles. Among the highlights are seafood dishes like salted bonito, stuffed mussels and tarama fish roe paste — especially tasty with a shot of top-shelf raki.

Escaping the Crowds
Istanbul's iconic sights get incredibly crowded. Yet there are ways to beat at least part of the crowd. The official websites for both Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace offer links to a Get Your Guide website listing local agencies with guided tours of the historic structures that include a 'fast pass' to skip the long lines to purchase tickets outside these venues.
Both of those landmarks are also included in a smartphone Istanbul Tourist Pass that offers admission to more than 100 major sights and museums around the city.
Istanbul's streets and public transport are also notoriously crowded. All of the major sights on the peninsula (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace) are within easy walking distance of one another. But elsewhere, getting around can be a major pain.
Luxury transport services offer a quick and easy solution. While agencies like Istanbul Limousine specialize in getting you to/from the airport, they also hire cars and drivers by the hour, day or even a week for touring the city. Rates fluctuate depending on the vehicle, from an ordinary sedan or van at the lower end to a Mercedes Sprinter or S Class sedan at the higher end.
It even gets crowded on the water, a multitude of jam-packed tourist boats flitting up and down the Bosporus. The alternative is chartering your own boat with a skipper and staff, as well as drinks and snacks. That way you can venture anywhere along the fabled waterway and cruise for as long as you like. Private Istanbul Cruise boasts a fleet or sleek motor yachts that can be hired for two hours or more.
Escape the crowds by hiring a private boat for a couple of hours to cruise up and down the Bosporus ... More at your leisure.

What Paige DeSorbo Packs for Her Annual Summer Trip to Italy

Packing just the right clothing, shoes, and travel accessories for a Mediterranean getaway full of sunbathing, sightseeing, and limoncello sipping requires the forethought of an experienced, well-dressed traveler—after all, there's no better time to pull out your best vacation outfits than on a trip to Italy. And who better to ask for Italy packing tips than the ultimate girl-about-town, Paige DeSorbo? I recently caught up with the reality star, podcast host, and founder of Daphne, a line of chic, ready-to-lounge clothing, to talk about how she packed for a two-week trip to Italy this summer. By now, she's a pro—DeSorbo's close-knit, Italian American family heads off to Capri every summer for a little R&R this year, they added a three-day jaunt to Positano to the itinerary. I asked DeSorbo about her packing strategy, style inspo, and tried-and-true carry-on essentials for living la dolce vita. Below, DeSorbo's cool-girl guide to packing for an Italian summer in style. Courtesy Grand Hotel Quisisana Where she stayed Every summer DeSorbo and her family stay at Grand Hotel Quisisana, a bright and beachy hotel with mesmerizing Mediterranean views. 'If I could move in and work at the front desk, I would,' she says, describing the luxe hotel as the perfect place to stay. 'It's so special that I take this trip with my family. It's a detox—I have therapy sessions with my mom by the pool and it's so rejuvenating. It's the only trip where I'm sad to leave—usually I'm excited to go home, but I always get sad to leave Italy.' After her stay in Capri, DeSorbo checked into Villa Treville Positano, a quaint hotel surrounded by lush gardens and dreamy terraces. Her tips for overpackers DeSorbo relaxing with views of crystal blue water in Capri, Italy Courtesy of Paige DeSorbo 'I got really good at packing for long trips on the Giggly Squad tour,' says DeSorbo. 'I had to pack for 60 shows. I would die without packing cubes—you can truly pack so much more with them allowing you to compress all your things.' As for her go-to luggage, DeSorbo recommends matching suitcases from Away (a Traveler-editor favorite, too). 'They fit a ton and look so sleek,' she says. 'For this two-week trip, I checked one big suitcase and one medium size. I brought one empty carry-on that I filled with things I picked up during the trip.' Her style inspiration for Capri DeSorbo wearing a Miu Miu tank top Courtesy of Paige DeSorbo I was following along on DeSorbo's Italian vacation via Instagram and couldn't get enough of her polished outfit photos. She says she gets a lot of her fashion inspo from Pinterest, but this time around she took notes from the latest season of The White Lotus. 'The show was a big inspiration for me. Chloe wore a custom pink Jacquemus look and I knew I had to recreate it.' She recommends trying on outfits and accessorizing them ahead of a trip to help trim down your packing list and save yourself some time once you're on vacation. 'I planned out one bathing suit look, one daytime look, and one nighttime look per day I was there.' To keep things simple, she recommends packing lots of matching sets or breathable dresses. During the day, DeSorbo threw on comfy pieces from her clothing line Daphne to wear for breakfast or over a bathing suit. 'I try not to bring a lot of shoes, but I do not subscribe to the no-heels-in-Italy rule,' she says. 'I go for kitten heels or low-block heels instead. On this trip, I wore a lot of Tony Bianco sandals.'

Portugal Golden Visa: Americans Benefit From Key Court Ruling In 2025

Aerial view of Poiso forest, Madeira Island, Portugal. getty The Portugal golden visa program has become a top choice for Americans seeking residency abroad, and recent constitutional rulings have further strengthened the program. In 2024, Forbes named Portugal the best golden visa program for investors because of the speed towards citizenship, coupled with the minimum requirement of spending two weeks in the country every year. Like every other EU golden visa, holders have access to free movement in all 27 EU countries and the Schengen area beyond, but Portugal also offers a great healthcare and education system, and social services. When Spain closed its program, both Portugal and Greece were big winners. For example, Greek government figures highlighted a monthly increase in American applications from 302 to 383 by November 2024. (Greece has one of the fastest golden visa processes, granting residency within 60 days.) By June 2025, the Portuguese government had seen a 72% increase in approvals, with Americans being the main recipients, according to information from the country's Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum, AIMA. The government approved a record number of applicants, 4,987 more than the previous year. Portugal's golden visa program has raised more than $7.2 billion (€7 billion) since it was created in 2012, and most participants have been Chinese, Brazilian, and U.S. nationals. Non-Europeans can apply for fast-track residency through various options in Portugal, including a minimum $525,000 (€500,000) investment in eligible funds. The program allowed people to apply for citizenship five years after enrolling in the golden visa program. Vida Capital is a Lisbon-based golden visa fund that has seen an immense increase in American interest in gaining Portuguese citizenship over the past year—a 571% increase in traffic from the U.S. in the first half of 2025 compared to the first half of 2024. Since 2019, the foreign population in Portugal has almost tripled to 1.6 million, which accounts for about 15% of the total population, as per Portugal's Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum. In June 2025, the government announced plans to toughen up on how people gain residency, and it was unclear how that would impact the golden visa program. For example, the government voted to extend the period required for a foreigner to obtain citizenship to as many as 10 years from the current five (reduced to seven years for individuals hailing from the so-called Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, such as Brazil). The government also voted on introducing a need to really understand the Portuguese language and culture before acquiring a passport. Vida Capital has seen a 116% bump in U.S. traffic since the government announced citizenship these changes in June. The Constitutional Ruling Favours The Portugal Golden Visa Program The Portuguese constitutional courts this week blocked several proposals of the upcoming Foreigner's Law that the government was planning to introduce namely that all immigrants to the country would have to undergo a two-year waiting period before bringing family members to Portugal and limiting reunification to spouses and minor children. The court upheld the rights of golden visa applicants and added that AIMA must continue processing golden visa family reunification applications under the existing favorable rules. Alex Ohnona, co-founder of Vida Capital said, "the constitutional court's ruling this week actually strengthens the case to move forward now. It signals that golden visa investors will maintain their special status, including family benefits, regardless of broader immigration reforms." Tomás Assis Teixeira, a partner at CCA Law in Porto, agreed that the ruling reinforced the golden visa status. "The Court notably didn't challenge the privileged treatment of golden visa holders compared to other visa types, and specifically preserved full family reunification rights for golden visa investors, including spouses, children, and dependent parents. This demonstrates Portugal's commitment to maintaining the programme's competitive advantages." Joana Mendonça, General Counsel of Global Citizen Solutions, a consultancy specializing in residency and citizenship by investment, added that "by upholding differential treatment for investors and skilled professionals, the court has confirmed that strategic economic policy objectives can coexist with constitutional equality principles when properly structured." The Arguments For And Against A Golden Visa Program Golden visa programs allow non-nationals to gain citizenship or residency in a country through investment. Critics argue that golden visas allow applicants to bypass residency requirements that apply to the rest of the population, such as language proficiency and the need to be in a country for a specific duration before applying. Many EU countries have closed their programs because critics also argue that they sometimes enable corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion. Advocates argue they bring in outside investment, injecting much needed foreign capital into a country's economy. Another reason golden visas are seen as divisive is that one of the ways that many golden visa programs offer residency is in exchange for investment in real estate. Analysts and incensed locals see these as one of the main contributing drivers of increased property prices. In 2023, Portugal removed the part of the program that offered golden visas through real estate purchases, and it was a contributing factor as to why Spain closed its program entirely in April 2025. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that the vast majority of these visas, 94%, were granted in connection with real estate investments in already strained housing markets. The current surge in American interest stems from many affluent families looking for a Plan B in respect of residency. However, as Forbes noted in 2025, U.S. applicants need to consider the additional cost of application fees, biometrics, and residence card issuance fees, due diligence costs, and renewal fees (every 2 years). Americans would also be liable for double taxation if they were to stay in Portugal for more than 183 days a year. Plus, to obtain actual citizenship, a language level of A2 in Portuguese would be required, as would a clean criminal record. One thing is clear, however. With European programs few and far between, interest in the Portugal golden visa will endure. Indeed, some industry insiders would go further, believing that the ruling might allow for the introduction of more favorable elements that would make it even more attractive.
