Patriots DC Terrell Williams out with 'medical condition'
May 9 - The New England Patriots are without defensive coordinator Terrell Williams at rookie minicamp after he stepped away from the team due to a "medical condition," head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters Friday.
Vrabel did not share any specifics on what health issue Williams, 50, is dealing with or when he is expected to return to the team in-person. ESPN reported Friday that Williams has been absent from the team for approximately a month.
Vrabel said Williams has been in touch with players and the coaching staff via Zoom, and Williams is expected to speak to reporters via Zoom later Friday.
"I've been in constant communication with him daily," said Vrabel, who would not put a timeline on Williams' return. "Terrell's eager to get back, and we're excited to get him back."
Williams is in his first season as defensive coordinator with the Patriots, which also is Vrabel's first season at the helm. He was on Vrabel's staff with the Tennessee Titans from 2018-23, finishing that tenure as the assistant head coach and defensive line coach. Williams served as defensive line coach/run game coordinator for the Detroit Lions last season.
Williams coached the defensive line for the Miami Dolphins (2015-17) and then-Oakland Raiders (2012-14) after college stints as an assistant at Texas A&M, Purdue, Akron and other schools.
In his absence, Williams' responsibilities are being handled by inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr, who was a New York Giants defensive assistant last season. Kuhr also spent time with Vrabel in various positions with the Titans from 2020-23.
"Zak has great knowledge of what we've done in the past, with me and this system, and with Terrell," Vrabel said.

For the past four years, he had served on the sales and marketing and Green Bay Packers Foundation committees, continuing work well into his 60s. Garcia's cause of death has not yet been announced, but an obituary shared by the Green Bay Press Gazette described his passing as 'sudden.' He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jill, as well as two daughters, Susan and Katherine, and a grandson, Oscar. On social media, tributes immediately began to pour in for the ex-NFL player, with many writing: 'Legend!'

Giants place 3B Matt Chapman (hand) on IL
June 11 - San Francisco Giants standout third baseman Matt Chapman was placed on the 10-day injured list due to right hand inflammation prior to Tuesday's game against the host Colorado Rockies. Chapman injured the hand while being picked off during Sunday's game against the Houston Astros. He jammed it while diving back to first base in the bottom of the eighth inning and immediately displayed he was in pain. Chapman, 32, finished out the game and underwent X-rays, which came back negative. Still, the inflammation remained the following day and then a move was made on Tuesday. The five-time Gold Glove winner is batting .243 with 12 homers and 30 RBIs in 65 games this season. He is in his second season with the Giants. Casey Schmitt will likely receive the most duty at third base while Chapman is sidelined. Schmitt is playing third Tuesday night and batting seventh. The Giants recalled infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. Study shows less online abuse of athletes during March Madness
June 11 - The NCAA recently released a study that indicated a decrease in social media abuse targeting student-athletes, including from sports bettors, during March Madness. According to the study, athletes were targeted in 15 percent of March Madness-related abusive posts and comments flagged by data science firm Signify Group during the 2025 men's and women's tournaments. That was a significant drop from the previous year's tournaments, when 42 percent of March Madness-spawned abusive posts and comments were directed at student-athletes. Per the NCAA's report, Signify Group gleaned this year's data by using its "Threat Matrix" technology to monitor the social-media accounts of 2,042 players, 346 coaches, 136 teams and 269 game officials and selection committee members. More than 1 million posts and comments directed at these groups on X, TikTok and Instagram were logged and analyzed by Signify's artificial intelligence. That led to 54,096 posts and comments being flagged for potential abuse or threat. Of those, Signify's human analysts confirmed 3,161 as "abusive or threatening." Signify investigated 103 social media accounts for their malicious activity and referred 10 of them to law enforcement. "By supporting the NCAA in demonstrating that abusers can be identified and will be reported to law enforcement -- where criminal thresholds are broken -- it is possible to see a deterrent effect in play," Jonathan Hirshler, Signify Group's CEO, said in a statement. Other findings from the study: Abuse stemming from sports bettors decreased by 23 percent, all abuse directed at those on the women's March Madness side dropped approximately 83 percent and all abuse directed at those on the men's side increased by 140 percent. While the 140 percent increase in men's tournament total abuse and the significant drop in abuse directed at student-athletes overall might not appear to jibe, the difference is in the sharp increase of this year's abuse being directed at adults -- such as coaches and the NCAA Tournament selection committee chaired by North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham. --Field Level Media
