WNBA power rankings: Liberty, Lynx jockey for top spot while Fever improve, Mystics surge
While the top-tier WNBA title contenders defended their positions in the season openers, one team shot up the rankings with an impressive first pair of games.
The reigning champion New York Liberty received their rings and continued right where they left off with a 92-78 win over Las Vegas. The Minnesota Lynx spoiled Paige Bueckers' debut. And the Indiana Fever showcased their new roster in a dismantling of the visiting Chicago Sky, 93-58. In a refreshing stat for Fever faithful that likely won't last, they currently lead the league in defensive rating (67.4). In a standard stat, Caitlin Clark secured the season's first triple-double .

For as much as the contending tier has been discussed, the bottom tier is shaking out to be just as interesting through the first weekend. It's the group battling in the WNBA lottery ranks for the best draft odds, jockeying for position amid another strong class headlined by UCLA center Lauren Betts and a pack of guards: TCU's Olivia Miles, UConn's Azzi Fudd, South Carolina's Ta'Niya Latson and LSU's Fla'jaue Johnson. (The WNBA draft lottery is based on the results from the past two seasons, so tanking isn't as clear-cut.)
In a way-too-early assessment of the playoff field, Washington could slide into a spot. Considering the lack of expectations surrounding their season, the Mystics' start is the most impressive. The least experienced team in the league is 2-0 and scored at least 90 points in each contest, shooting better than 50% in wins over the Dream and Sun. The front office is committed to rebuilding through the draft and development; so far, that's well on its way.
Brittany Sykes, a veteran guard often noticed more for her staunch defense, stepped into the lead offense role with 49 points and 12 assists over two games. She was aggressive to the basket to score 20 of those points at the line (20-of-25). In 58 games with Washington, her previous high in attempts was nine (four times in 2023).

Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron are playing beyond their rookie descriptor, starting and playing hefty minutes in both games. Iriafen became the 10th rookie in WNBA history to score at least 30 points with 18 rebounds in her first two games. Citron, who clinched the last-minute win over the Dream, is an evolving defensive menace moving up the Rookie of the Year watch list.
And Shakira Austin, besieged by injuries the past two seasons, made her debut against the Sun — though she was ejected for drawing two technicals, including one from the bench. Her healthy return can lift Washington's ceiling, as could that of Aaliyah Edwards.
It's far too early to overreact and lift their potential, but the Mystics are already taking care of necessary business. Every game matters in a short season, and winning the matchups with teams projected to finish in your tier is crucial. Those records can break ties, or mean the difference between a playoff berth and longshot lottery odds.
If the young Mystics continue to develop upward, they don't need those picks anyway.
Player of the Week: Napheesa Collier
Collier averaged 28.5 points, five rebounds and 2.5 assists to help the Lynx go 2-0 to open the season. She made at least 55% of her field goal attempts in each game, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, and is perfect on nine field goals.
Game to watch
New York Liberty at Indiana Fever, Saturday at 1 p.m. ET on CBS: It's the first premier competition of the season for the Fever, and a potential Finals preview . The game is also a kickoff to a massive weekend in Indianapolis.

Management was "completely taken aback to learn that she was posting about another league's games while in the midst of rendering services" to the Big3, the email read by DeMita said. "This is true. I did send out three tweets about the Indiana Fever during the Big3 broadcast," she said. One of them was a video showing a three-point shot by Caitlin Clark, that said "for those that question the hype." The Big3 tried to recruit Clark before she went to the WNBA, the New York Post reported. "I did feel a little bummed that there wasn't any discussion pior to me being fired. I wasn't under the impression that those tweets would do any harm to the Big3," she added. "I will take it on the chin, my bad, I will apologize for it." Sophie Cunningham says her flagrant foul, fight vs. Sun was byproduct of WNBA refs not protecting Caitlin Clark
The WNBA announced the first fan returns in All-Star voting this season on Friday, and four Indiana Fever players clocked in as top-10 fan vote-getters so far. But another Fever player a bit lower on that list is skyrocketing in popularity right now. Advertisement That's 28-year-old guard Sophie Cunningham, otherwise known as Caitlin Clark's bodyguard. Ahead of the Fever's Sunday afternoon road matchup against the Las Vegas Aces, Cunningham doubled down on her decision to back up Clark with a flagrant 2 foul, and subsequent viral melee, in Tuesday's win over the Connecticut Sun. "I'm not focused on the extracurricular activities, and you know what, during that, it was just part of the game," Cunningham said. "I think the refs had a lot to do with that. It was a build up for a couple years now of them just not protecting the star player of the WNBA. So, at the end of the day, I'm going to protect my teammates." Sun guard Jacy Sheldon, who has had a competitive back-and-forth with Clark since their Big Ten days, poked Clark in the eye midway through the third quarter. Clark reacted, and her and Sheldon shoved each other. That's when Sun center Tina Charles got between the two backcourt players. But Sun guard Marina Mabrey crashed the scrum and knocked Clark down to the hardwood. Mabrey wasn't ejected. Instead, she was given a technical foul. So were Clark and Charles. Sheldon's foul was upgraded to a flagrant 1. On Wednesday, the WNBA upgraded Mabrey's foul to a flagrant 2, meaning she would have been ejected had it been called that way during the game. Clark, in particular, has repeatedly not gotten calls she, her teammates or her coaches feels she deserves. Cunningham took matters into her own hands in the final minute of the fourth quarter. She pulled down a driving Sheldon by the head. In response, Sheldon and Sun guard Lindsay Allen stormed Cunningham and pushed her back into fans along the baseline. Cunningham retaliated by grabbing Sheldon's hair as the scuffle grew. Cunningham was ejected because of the flagrant 2 foul. Sheldon and Allen both got technicals for fighting and were tossed as well. Advertisement The league later gave Cunningham an additional fine, on top of the standard flagrant 2 foul fine, for participating in the fight. As Cunningham was ejected, she received heaps of support from Fever fans. That support has continued, not only from Indiana but from sports fans everywhere. Her jersey sold out in the Fever team store. And she's gained several hundred thousands of followers across Instagram and TikTok. "It's cool, its funny what people are kind of attracted to," Cunningham said Saturday. "I'm just trying to keep the main thing the main thing, and that's basketball, trying to win games, sticking up for my teammates, and that's all part of it."

Liberty center Jonquel Jones out 4-6 weeks with sprained ankle
NEW YORK — Liberty center Jonquel Jones will be out four to six week after spraining her right ankle, the team announced Saturday. Jones sprained her ankle during the second quarter of an 89-81 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday night. 'After further imaging and evaluation, Jonquel avoided long-term injury, and she is projected to return to game action in approximately four-to-six weeks,' the team said in a statement.
