By: TV Sarawak Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor will join Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim's delegation for the Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultation in Jakarta on July 29. Key discussions will include the Sulawesi Sea maritime boundary. Anwar said their participation is essential, as any border agreement must be approved by the Sabah and Sarawak governments. He reaffirmed his practice of involving both state leaders in major bilateral talks. Responding to a question about the 2002 ICJ ruling on Ligitan and Sipadan, Anwar said the matter is unrelated to ongoing Sulawesi Sea negotiations, which remain unresolved. He noted that the 2023 Sulawesi Sea Treaty includes a non-disclosure clause and stressed that talks with Indonesia, led by President Prabowo Subianto, aim for compromise while preserving sovereignty and friendly ties. Anwar said Malaysia remains committed to resolving the issue through dialogue, without straining military or diplomatic relations. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Malaysia not taking Thailand-Cambodia conflict lightly, says PM Anwar

ALOR SETAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says the government is not taking lightly the ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia and its impact on Malaysia. Anwar said that although the situation in Malaysia remained stable and calm, the country must learn from the experiences of its neighbours. "I believe, as of now, the leaders of both countries appear ready (to cease attacks), but we must remain vigilant as the Asean region is geopolitically very strategic. "We in Malaysia do not take it lightly even though the situation in our country is stable and calm; we learn from the experiences of our neighbouring countries," he told reporters after attending a closed-door meeting with PKR leaders from Perlis, Kedah and Penang here on Friday (July 25). He said the conflict should also be addressed through diplomatic efforts, and both leaders had, in principle, agreed to halt the fighting, although there appeared to be some violations at the border. Anwar said he had contacted the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia and was optimistic that both countries would stop the attacks to allow a peace process to take place. "They (the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia) have given very good cooperation….Both prime ministers told me, 'Anwar, thank you very much, we accept your role and we want you to carry on'," said Anwar. The Prime Minister said he had also asked Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to contact the foreign ministers of Thailand and Cambodia regarding the issue. On Thursday, Bernama reported that Anwar welcomed the positive signals and willingness shown by Bangkok and Phnom Penh in considering a ceasefire to prevent further conflict at the border of the two countries. Anwar was reported to have contacted Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on Thursday afternoon to express Malaysia's concern over the escalating tensions. The media previously reported that Thai and Cambodian troops clashed on Thursday in a disputed border area, with both sides accusing each other of sparking the latest confrontation. Tensions between the two Southeast Asian nations have risen since May 28 following a bloody incident in the Preah Vihear area that claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier. The two countries have long been at odds over their 817km border, which has remained unresolved for decades, and the dispute continues to strain diplomatic relations. - Bernama

A new date is expected to be announced in early August following final discussions with all relevant stakeholders. The rally is intended as a show of solidarity with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and the GRS-PH government in their ongoing efforts to uphold Sabah's rights and political stability. Over 100 associations and NGO coalitions had pledged support for the gathering, with estimated participation exceeding 10,000 people. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Thailand, Cambodia agree to ceasefire, says PM Anwar

JITRA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Friday (July 25) said that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a ceasefire and to withdraw their troops from the border. The Prime Minister said both countries had agreed but requested some time, as their troops were already stationed at the border and needed time to pull back. "Yesterday, I had a phone conversation with the acting Prime Minister of Thailand and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, because of Malaysia's position and their respect for us. "I'm grateful because when I spoke with them, both responded respectfully. Why? Because Malaysia is a peaceful and stable country,' he said when addressing the 2025 Anti-Drug Day Celebration here on Friday. On Thursday (July 24), the Prime Minister welcomed the positive signals and willingness shown by Bangkok and Phnom Penh in considering the implementation of a ceasefire to prevent further conflict. Anwar was reported to have contacted Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on Thursday evening to convey Malaysia's concern over the escalating tensions. Earlier, media reports stated that Thai and Cambodian troops clashed on Thursday in the disputed border area, with both sides blaming each other for initiating the latest confrontation. Tensions between the two South-East Asian nations have been escalating since May 28, following a deadly incident in the Preah Vihear area that claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier. The two countries have been at odds for decades over their still-undemarcated 817-kilometre border, and the dispute continues to strain diplomatic relations.- Bernama
