OTTAWA — The national statistics agency says the volume and severity of police-reported crime in Canada decreased four per cent last year, after three annual increases in a row.
Statistics Canada says non-violent crime had a significant effect on the decline in the overall crime severity index in 2024.
The non-violent crime severity index — including such crimes as property and drug offences — dropped six per cent last year, following a nine per cent increase from 2021 to 2023.
The agency says the violent crime severity index decreased one per cent in 2024 and had a comparatively smaller effect on the overall picture.
That particular index had risen for three previous consecutive years and had increased 15 per cent over that period.
The crime severity index was developed to address the limitations of a police-reported crime rate that is driven by high-volume — but less serious — offences.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 22, 2025.

Northern Ont. man fined $1,800 for camping too long on Crown land

A northern Ontario man was fined $1,800 after pleading guilty to breaking the 21-day rule for camping on Crown land. Michael Cox of Atikokan overstayed his welcome after leaving his camper trailer in the same spot for at least six weeks at Williamson Lake in northwestern Ontario last year. Conservation officers first noted the trailer at the lake's landing on May 14, 2023. 'The trailer was noted to be in the same location on multiple occasions until it was removed on June 25, 2023, after Cox had been contacted,' the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry said in a news release Feb. 16. The guilty plea was entered Nov. 17 in a hearing held by Justice of the Peace Nancy Tulloch in Atikokan. 'Canadian residents can camp for free on Crown land for up to 21 days at one site in a calendar year, unless the site has been restricted for a specific reason,' the ministry said in a June 13, 2019 bulletin. 'After 21 days, the person and camping equipment must move a minimum of 100 meters to another location.' Campers from outside of Canada are required to purchase a Crown land camping permit which costs $9.35 per person per day plus HST.

Construction site fire in Langley, B.C., shuts nearby roads

Langley RCMP are asking people to avoid the area of 201 Street and Fraser Highway on Sunday morning after a large fire at a construction site. Police say they were called out just before 4:15 a.m. PT to the construction site in the suburban Metro Vancouver community. Pictures from the scene show a large blaze at the site of a building under construction. Police say neighbouring residential buildings were evacuated as a precaution. No one was injured in the fire, according to police, but they say roads are closed nearby on Sunday morning. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, according to police. They're asking anyone with more information, including dashcam footage, to call them and quote file number 2025-26994.
