One of Newcastle's new recruits made his impact on the pitch almost instantly as Anthony Elanga fired the Magpies ahead on his first start for the team after slicing home from Sandro Tonali's low cross.
However, the Gunners struck twice in quick succession when Mikel Merino tucked home into the bottom corner and two minutes later Alex Murphy turned the ball into his own net.

Jacob Murphy equalised for Newcastle after the break with a low finish from outside of the box, but Martin Odegaard snatched victory from the penalty spot in the 84th minute.
Arsenal are back in pre-season action against rivals Tottenham on Thursday, while Newcastle face an all-star K League side on Wednesday.

Eddie Howe hints at Alexander Isak exit with pointed remark to leave Liverpool on red alert

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak remains banished from training alongside his Magpies colleagues amid interest from Liverpool and Eddie Howe has now offered a fresh update Eddie Howe claims he's in the dark over Newcastle telling star striker Alexander Isak he must STAY at the club. The Swedish forward is at the heart of a major row involving his future amid interest from Liverpool. ‌ The Reds have already had a bid of over £100m turned down by the Premier League rivals. That has led to Isak submitting a request to leave the club before the end of the window, while he has yet to be reunited with his teammates. ‌ Newcastle have reportedly taken a hard-line stance over Isak's future. Reports earlier this week claimed that they told the 25-year-old that he won't be going anywhere this summer, a decision that has left him 'fuming'. ‌ In the meantime they have also told him that he will not play for the club until he understands his future lies in the North East. Asked about those claims, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe claimed that the non-sale stance was not led by him. Speaking after his side's pre-season friendly clash with Atletico Madrid, Howe said: "No, that's not something I'm aware of. I'm not party to all discussions, but I have no knowledge of that." Howe's latest comments come shortly after his previous update, where he claimed that he could not involve Isak while the transfer furore was ongoing. He said: "We've had discussions and it's clear at the moment we can't have him involved with the group. I don't know how long that will be for. It's clear I can't involve him with the team at the moment. 'He is training later than the rest of the squad. There have been discussions since the tour. I don't think disciplinary action has happened. "He is here, so of course he has a future at Newcastle. From our perspective, we would love to have him back with the team, but the situation has to be right for that to happen." ‌ Newcastle begin their latest Premier League campaign against Aston Villa next weekend, a game that Isak looks set to miss - a fact that is not lost on Howe. Asked if the striker could potentially play, Howe replied: "I want Alex to be playing today. I want him training tomorrow. We would love the player to be with us, let me make that absolutely clear. "There is no part of me that does not want that outcome. But I don't see the current situation changing before Aston Villa." Mikel Arteta sends message to Kai Havertz after Viktor Gyokeres transfer

Mikel Arteta has sought to reassure Kai Havertz over his game-time at Arsenal after Viktor Gyokeres' move to the Emirates Stadium. Sweden international Gyokeres completed a £64m move to Arsenal last month and scored his first goal for the club in Saturday's pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao. Gyokeres' header, provided by an excellent cross from Martin Zubimendi, put Arsenal ahead and the hosts doubled their lead shortly after through Bukayo Saka. Havertz came off the bench to add Arsenal's third late on as Arteta's side ended a somewhat worrying pre-season schedule with an impressive and deserved win. Ex-Chelsea man Havertz was Arsenal's first-choice striker for much of last season but Gyokeres looks set to take that slot following his move from Sporting. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. The 27-year-old enjoyed two prolific seasons at the Portuguese giants, scoring 97 goals in 102 appearances. Gyokeres' arrival will put pressure on Havertz but Arteta says the German can play in the same team as Arsenal's marquee summer signing or adopt a different role in the side. Before his 2023 move to north London, Havertz played across the front line for Chelsea and his national team Germany. More Trending Asked about the competition Havertz will face following Gyokeres' arrival, Arteta said after the Bilbao win: 'They can play together or Kai can play in different positions. 'It elevates the quality in the squad, the options we have in the team and the options to provide opposition with a lot of problems. 'It's great to see them both scoring and both of them in such good form. It's a good problem to have.' Mikel Arteta issues update on Arsenal transfer plans as Viktor Gyokeres warning fired

ARSENAL 3-0 ATHLETIC CLUB: Viktor Gyokeres grabbed his first Gunners goal as Mikel Arteta's side ended pre-season by winning the Emirates Cup Mikel Arteta insists Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz can play together in attack for Arsenal. The forward duo both found the target as the Gunners ended pre-season on a high with a 3-0 demolition of Athletic Club. ‌ Gyokeres grabbed his first Arsenal goal in front of a delighted home crowd while Havertz also gave his boss something to think about after entering the pitch as a sub and scoring after Bukayo Saka's second. ‌ Arteta is relishing his newly-established squad depth, stating: "They can play together, Kai can play in different positions as well. It elevates the team's level and options of the squad. It's great to see both of them scoring and it's a good problem to have." ‌ Gyokeres hit 39 league goals in Portugal last season but none of them were with his head. Arteta believes the £63.7million frontman brings so much to the table and has warned opposition defenders they face being "destroyed" if they afford him space. He continued ahead of next week's Premier League opener at Old Trafford: "Everything he does is on instinct. That's why he's scored so many in the last few seasons. It's goals, he's a threat, he pins centre-backs and when you leave him with space 1v1 he will destroy you." Arsenal also won the post-match penalty shootout 6-5 as new boy Martin Zubimendi, who assisted Gyokeres, netted the decisive spot-kick. The Spaniard looks worth every penny of his £60m fee. ‌ Arteta also claimed the Gunners might not yet be done in the market, adding: "Let's see what happens in terms of where the squad is in the next few weeks. We are actively looking at options, there are a few players that may have to leave as well. We are open to seeing what happens." Arteta expects Leandro Trossard to be fit to face Manchester United even though he's battling a groin issue. On the pitch, Declan Rice encouraged Gyokeres to treat the Emirates to his trademark mask celebration after opening his account for Arsenal. ‌ Two minutes later, Gyokeres, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli combined, teeing up red-hot Saka to double the hosts' advantage. Havertz, who has come back from injury in impressive physical shape, then burst through on goal, showcasing tremendous speed to collect Saka's hooked pass before finishing cutely. Arteta was also pleased with the reception Noni Madueke received from the home crowd, explaining: "The reception that he got every time he was on the ball was super positive. You can tell the quality he has every time he's on the ball." Arsenal have no other fitness concern as Riccardo Calafiori also made his return, playing the opening 45 minutes.
