Image shows Mars 4 billion years ago revealing OCEAN world – and scientists say ‘lost' sea may still be hiding on planet

A LOST Martian ocean may be hiding beneath the red planet's surface.
Today Mars is a cold and dry desert – but it may have been covered in rivers, lakes, and seas around four billion years ago.

Even as recently as 3.1 billion years ago, it may have still had "shimmering" liquid water in large quantities.
Scientists say that some of this escaped to space or froze on the polar caps – as well as the water that was trapped in minerals.
But scientists say that a there is still a significant amount of "missing" water that may be lurking under the ground.
In fact, this missing water is enough to cover the entire planet in an ocean "at least 700 metres deep, and perhaps up to 900 metres deep", according to Professor Hrvoje Tkalčić, of the Australian National University.
The scientists have used seismic data from Nasa 's InSight probe, which launched in 2018.
And this may have revealed a vast ocean underground.
"We uncovered evidence that the seismic waves slow down in a layer between 5.4 and 8 kilometres below the surface," Tkalčić explained.
"Which could be because of the presence of liquid water at these depths."
Nasa's InSight uses a seismometer to "listen" to the inside of Mars.
And scientists were able to track down a "significant underground anomaly".
This was a layer where the vibrations were moving more slowly – a "low-velocity layer".
The scientists believe this is very porous rock that has filled up with liquid water – just like a spone.
"We calculated the 'aquifer layer' on Mars could hold enough water to cover the planet in a global ocean 520–780m deep," said Tkalčić.
"Several times as much water as is held in Antarctica's ice sheet."

The downside is that the seismic data only covers a small slice of Mars.
So scientists will need to get more seismometers to the red planet to fully map these potential water layers.
If they can find these water layers and drill into them, it could lead to a major breakthrough in the hunt for alien life.
"Liquid water is essential for life as we know it. On Earth, microbes thrive in deep, water-filled rock," Tkalčić explained.
"Could similar life, perhaps relics of ancient Martian ecosystems, persist in these reservoirs? There's only one way to find out.
Tkalčić continued: "The water may be a lifeline for more complex organisms, too – such as future human explorers.
"Purified, it could provide drinking water, oxygen, or fuel for rockets.
"Of course, drilling kilometres deep on a distant planet is a daunting challenge."

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, and Earth's space neighbour.
The blood-red planet was named by the ancient Romans after their god of war.
It's about 2,100 miles wide and roughly half the size of Earth.
The planet is around 142 million miles from the Sun on average, with sunlight taking 13 minutes to reach the red planet's surface.
A single Martian day lasts about 24.6 hours – while a year lasts 669.6 sols, or 687 Earth days.
The planet has two small moons named Phobos and Deimos.
It's home to Olympus Mons, which is the largest volcano in our solar system and around three times the height of Mt Everest.
Temperatures can range from 20C to -153C.

Scientists think that this lost water could account for the "missing" water on the planet.
It may have ended up underground by seeping through cracks in the crust.
Those cracks may have been formed after Mars was "heavily bombarded by meteorites".
"Deep beneath the surface, warmer temperatures would keep the water in a liquid state – unlike the frozen layers nearer the surface," Tkalčić explained.

It is one of the largest ice masses on Earth, covering an area of roughly 760,000 square miles. But the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is on the verge of a 'catastrophic' collapse, scientists have warned. As global carbon dioxide (CO2) levels continue to rise, researchers from the Australian National University say that the ice sheet is weakening, and is at increasing risk of collapsing altogether. If it did collapse, experts predict the West Antarctic Ice Sheet would raise sea levels by more than 9.8ft (three metres). This would plunge entire coastal cities and communities around the world underwater. Here in the UK, towns and cities including Hull, Skegness, Middlesbrough, and Newport would be covered in water. Meanwhile in Europe, much of the Netherlands, as well as Venice, Montpellier, and Gdansk, would be submerged. 'Rapid change has already been detected across Antarctica's ice, oceans and ecosystems, and this is set to worsen with every fraction of a degree of global warming,' said Dr Nerilie Abram, lead author of the study. In their study, the researchers set out to understand exactly what would happen if the West Antarctic Ice Sheet collapsed. Worryingly, their analysis indicates that a collapse would result in 'catastrophic consequences for generations to come.' 'The loss of Antarctic sea ice is another abrupt change that has a whole range of knock–on effects, including making the floating ice shelves around Antarctica more susceptible to wave–driven collapse,' Dr Abram explained. 'The decline in Antarctic sea ice and the slowdown of deep circulation in the Southern Ocean are showing worrying signs of being more susceptible to a warming climate than previously thought. 'As sea ice is lost from the ocean surface, it is also changing the amount of solar heat being retained in the climate system, and that is expected to worsen warming in the Antarctic region. 'Other changes to the continent could soon become unstoppable, including the loss of Antarctic ice shelves and vulnerable parts of the Antarctic ice sheet that they hold behind them.' One of the biggest impacts would be to Antarctica's wildlife and ocean ecosystems, according to Professor Matthew England, co–author of the study. 'The loss of Antarctic sea ice brings heightened extinction risk for emperor penguins, whose chicks depend on a stable sea ice habitat prior to growing their waterproof feathers,' he warned. 'The loss of entire colonies of chicks has been seen right around the Antarctic coast because of early sea ice breakout events, and some colonies have experienced multiple breeding failure events over the last decade.' Meanwhile, if the scientists' most extreme predictions are right and global sea levels do rise by 9.8ft, hundreds of coastal towns and cities could be plunged underwater. Climate Central's Coastal Risk Screening Tool shows the areas around the globe that would be worst hit. To use the tool, simply set the water level at 9.8ft and the areas that would be plunged underwater will appear in red on the map. Here in the UK, people living on the east coast of England would be worst hit. Coastal hubs including Hull, Skegness and Grimsby would be plunged underwater, while places as far inland as Peterborough and Lincoln would also become waterlogged. Further south, swathes of London would be affected. Several areas on the River Thames gleam red on the map, including Bermondsey, Greenwich, Battersea, and Chelsea. While the east coast of England would be most affected, several towns and cities on the west coast are also in the firing line, according to Climate Central. Neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Weston–super–Mare, Newport and Cardiff would all be plunged underwater, alongside parts of Southport and Blackpool. Residents in Northern Ireland and Scotland can mostly rest easy though, with few areas set to be affected. Elsewhere in Europe, Climate Central predicts that the entire coast stretching from Calais to south Denmark would be underwater, along with Venice. Over in the US, several towns and cities in the Southern states would probably be affected. These include New Orleans in Louisiana, Galveston in Texas and the Everglades in Florida. The researchers hope the findings will emphasise the urgent need to limit CO2 emissions and curb global warming. 'The only way to avoid further abrupt changes and their far–reaching impacts is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions fast enough to limit global warming to as close to 1.5 degrees Celsius as possible,' Dr Abram said. 'Governments, businesses and communities will need to factor in these abrupt Antarctic changes that are being observed now into future planning for climate change impacts.' Antarctica's ice sheets contain 70% of world's fresh water - and sea levels would rise by 180ft if it melts Antarctica holds a huge amount of water. The three ice sheets that cover the continent contain around 70 per cent of our planet's fresh water - and these are all to warming air and oceans. If all the ice sheets were to melt due to global warming, Antarctica would raise global sea levels by at least 183ft (56m). Given their size, even small losses in the ice sheets could have global consequences. In addition to rising sea levels, meltwater would slow down the world's ocean circulation, while changing wind belts may affect the climate in the southern hemisphere. In February 2018, Nasa revealed El Niño events cause the Antarctic ice shelf to melt by up to ten inches (25 centimetres) every year. El Niño and La Niña are separate events that alter the water temperature of the Pacific ocean. The ocean periodically oscillates between warmer than average during El Niños and cooler than average during La Niñas. Using Nasa satellite imaging, researchers found that the oceanic phenomena cause Antarctic ice shelves to melt while also increasing snowfall. In March 2018, it was revealed that more of a giant France-sized glacier in Antarctica is floating on the ocean than previously thought.

Nasa's Webb telescope has found a new moon around Uranus. The tiny object is only about 10 kilometres wide and is the 29th addition to the family of moons around the planet. Scientists think it was able to hide for so long not only because of its small size but also its relative faintness. That meant it could lay undiscovered during other observations, such as Voyager 2, which flew past the planet around 40 years ago. There could many other of the objects lying in wait around the planet, still undiscovered, researchers suggest. 'No other planet has as many small inner moons as Uranus, and their complex inter-relationships with the rings hint at a chaotic history that blurs the boundary between a ring system and a system of moons,' said Matthew Tiscareno of the SETI Institute, a member of the research team, in a statement. 'Moreover, the new moon is smaller and much fainter than the smallest of the previously known inner moons, making it likely that even more complexity remains to be discovered.' All of the moons around Uranus are named after characters from Shakespeare and Alexandra Pope. The new one is part of a system that orbits inside the largest moons Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon, for instance. But the new one is yet to receive a name. It will get one when it is approved by the International Astronomical Union, which chooses names and designations for objects in space.

More than one billion miles away from Earth, Uranus is one of the least explored planets in our solar system. So it comes as no surprise that scientists still regularly make new discoveries about the ice giant planet. This week, NASA has uncovered a secret moon hiding in Uranus' orbit. The moon – which is yet to be named – was discovered using the James Webb Space Telescope, and is believed to be around six miles wide. To put that into perspective, that's around 350 times smaller than our own moon! The discovery expands the total known number of moons orbiting Uranus to 29. 'No other planet has as many small inner moons as Uranus, and their complex inter–relationships with the rings hint at a chaotic history that blurs the boundary between a ring system and a system of moons,' said Matthew Tiscareno of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, a member of the research team. 'Moreover, the new moon is smaller and much fainter than the smallest of the previously known inner moons, making it likely that even more complexity remains to be discovered.' NASA first spotted the new moon during an observation of Uranus on 2 February 2025. 'This object was spotted in a series of 10 40–minute long–exposure images captured by the Near–Infrared Camera (NIRCam),' explained Dr Maryame El Moutamid, a lead scientist in SwRI's Solar System Science and Exploration Division based in Boulder, Colorado. 'It's a small moon but a significant discovery, which is something that even NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft didn't see during its flyby nearly 40 years ago.' The moon is the 14th small moon found to orbit Uranus' larger moons – Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon (named after characters from Shakespeare and Alexander Pope). 'It's located about 35,000 miles (56,000 kilometers) from Uranus' center, orbiting the planet's equatorial plane between the orbits of Ophelia (which is just outside of Uranus' main ring system) and Bianca,' Dr El Moutamid added. 'Its nearly circular orbit suggests it may have formed near its current location.' The planets in our solar system have different numbers of moons – ranging from 0 to 274. Neither Mercury nor Venus have any moons, while you probably already know that Earth has just one. Mars has two moons named Phobos and Deimos, and Jupiter has 95 – including the biggest moon in our solar system, Ganymede.
