Mangaluru: In a bid to tackle the growing threat of yellow leaf disease (YLD) affecting arecanut plantations in parts of Dakshina Kannada, MP Capt Brijesh Chowta has proposed a major initiative to introduce coffee cultivation in the region.
Speaking during the launch of 'Bolpu– A Dawn of Opportunities' on Saturday, the MP said that a programme to plant 30,000 coffee saplings in the district will be launched this month.
"For the past year, I was in discussion with the Union Agriculture and Commerce ministers regarding the impact of yellow leaf disease in Sullia, Kadaba, Puttur, and parts of Belthangady. Once this disease strikes, growing arecanut in the same soil becomes difficult," he said.
Following his request, the horticulture department conducted a soil study in the affected regions. The results indicated that coffee can be successfully grown in these areas. "It is not that coffee has never been cultivated here, but now we have scientific backing to promote it systematically. This could pave the way for a new coffee revolution," Chowta said.
The Coffee Board and cooperative societies in Sullia and Kadaba have already been approached, and farmers are undergoing training in coffee-growing areas.

Privatisation of public healthcare in Andhra Pradesh denounced

VIJAYAWADA: Under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, the coalition government's proposed health sector reforms in Andhra Pradesh are facing sharp criticism from public health activists, who warn they will make healthcare unaffordable for the poor. Concerns centre on the reported plan to hand over 10 under-construction medical colleges to private entities and to establish super-specialty hospitals in every MLA constituency under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Activists point out that in other states, PPP-run facilities have led to soaring medical costs, restricting access for disadvantaged patients. GOs 107 and 108 sparked outrage by enabling costly self-finance seats in medical colleges, prompting Praja Arogya Vedika's (PAV) statewide drive with seminars, and drives across districts. Speaking to TNIE, PAV State President MV Ramanaiah said, 'As part of the campaign, a National Health Seminar titled 'Privatisation of the Healthcare Sector—Impacts and Solutions' will be held on August 24 at MB Vignana Kendram Auditorium, Vijayawada.'

State withholding Ayushman Bharat for Over-70s, says MP

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta on Monday told the Lok Sabha that Karnataka's refusal to fund its share of the Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana has left senior citizens in the state without free healthcare. Speaking under Rule 377, Chowta said the scheme, launched last year by the Narendra Modi government, provides citizens aged 70 and above with cashless hospital treatment up toRs5 lakh annually. 'The Karnataka government's refusal to contribute 40% of the cost has effectively stalled its rollout in the state, depriving lakhs of elderly people of critical, life-saving care,' he said. In the Mangaluru region alone, Chowta noted, about 80,000 senior citizens are unable to access the benefit. He urged the Union government to act swiftly to protect the health rights of Karnataka's elderly and ensure that the state implements the popular scheme in full.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Raising the issue under Rule 377, Capt Chowta highlighted that the Karnataka govt refused to contribute its mandatory 40% share under the scheme. This decision left lakhs of elderly citizens without access to healthcare, many of whom depend on the scheme for life-saving treatment. Mangaluru has a senior citizen population of around 80,000 who are above 70 years and are currently missing out on the Rs 5 lakh per year insurance cover for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation under the scheme, the MP said. He emphasised that this move is in contradiction to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, who launched Ayushman Bharat to ensure universal health coverage and financial protection for the most vulnerable sections of society. The MP said he urged the Union govt to take immediate steps to safeguard the healthcare rights of Karnataka's senior citizens and to direct the state govt to fulfil its obligations under this flagship initiative.
