Toyota Industries likely to accept $42 billion takeover bid by group firms

Toyota Industries is likely to announce as early as Tuesday that it will accept a takeover offer from Toyota Motor and other affiliated group companies, according to a Nikkei report. Once the tender offer is accepted, the group companies are expected to take Toyota Industries private. The acquisition is estimated to be valued at around 6 trillion yen (approximately $42 billion). The acquisition will be financed partly by Toyota Fudosan, the group's real estate division, as well as personal contributions from Akio Toyoda, chairman of Toyota Motor. Up to 50 per cent of the total amount is expected to be raised through loans from financial institutions. Toyota Industries Corporation is a prominent Japanese company known for its diverse range of industrial products, including forklifts, textile machinery, and automotive components. This move reflects ongoing strategic consolidation within the Toyota Group aimed at strengthening its competitive position and streamlining operations. Toyota's origins trace back to the early 20th century when Sakichi Toyoda founded Toyoda Automatic Loom Works in 1926, focusing on textile machinery. The company's automotive division was established later, leading to the creation of Toyota Motor Corporation in 1937 as a separate entity dedicated to vehicle manufacturing. Over time, Toyota expanded rapidly, becoming one of the world's largest automobile producers. As the business grew, it diversified into several specialised companies within the broader Toyota Group, such as Toyota Industries, handling industrial equipment, and Toyota Fudosan. This division allowed the group to focus on different sectors while maintaining close collaboration under the Toyota brand umbrella, helping to build a global industrial powerhouse.

Car Sales Stick to Slow Lane in May

HighlightsIndia's passenger vehicle market saw a marginal year-on-year increase of 0.1%, with approximately 352,000 vehicles sold in May 2024. Mahindra & Mahindra achieved a significant sales increase of 21%, selling 52,431 units, while Tata Motors experienced an 11% decline in sales to 41,557 units during the same period. Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported a 22% growth in sales, reaching 29,280 units, driven primarily by demand for Multi-Purpose Vehicles and Sports Utility Vehicles. India's passenger vehicle market remained flat in May even as Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and Toyota Kirloskar Motor clocked strong double-digit growth in volumes, riding on robust demand for their utility vehicle lineups. Overall, the industry sold about 352,000 cars, sedans and utility vehicles last month, marking a marginal 0.1% year-on-year increase, according to initial industry estimates. 'There is pressure in the market,' said a senior industry executive who requested not to be identified. 'But we also have to remember that the base is now very high. India is one of the very high markets in the world…selling more than four million passenger vehicles annually. So, even if the growth is modest, and is likely to remain so for some time, volumes are still good,' the person added. Retail sales are estimated to have declined by 0.8% year on year in May, industry insiders said. Most automakers in India report wholesale figures—factory dispatches to dealerships—and not retail sales to customers. Demand in the local market continues to be driven by SUVs. Homegrown auto major Mahindra continued to maintain its lead over rival Tata Motors in May, powered by demand for its range of utility vehicles. Mahindra sold 52,431 units last month, up 21% over 43,218 units sold in May 2024. Tata Motors' passenger vehicle sales fell 11% to 41,557 units from 46,697 units during the same period. 'Thanks to continued demand for our products, we were able to deliver industry-leading growth across our ICE (internal combustion engine powered by petrol or diesel) and BEV (battery electric vehicles) portfolio,' said Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO of automotive division at M&M. Toyota Kirloskar reported an increase of 22% to sell 29,280 units last month, with MPV and SUV segments continuing to be the primary growth drivers.

Asian shares mostly end lower, Nikkei down 1.30%

Asian stocks closed mostly lower in thin trade on Monday, with mainland China, New Zealand and Malaysian markets closed for holidays. Trade tensions returned to the fore as Beijing accused U.S. of violating Geneva trade truce over chip curbs and the Trump administration announced it will double the current tariff rate on steel and aluminum imports from 25 percent to 50 percent. Escalating Russia-Ukraine tensions and disappointing manufacturing data from China, Japan and South Korea for May also kept investors on edge. Oil prices jumped over 2 percent in Asian trade as Ukraine launched a major drone strike, destroying 40 key Russian aircraft, further reducing the prospects for an end to the fighting. Gold also jumped more than 2 percent to trade above $3,350 per ounce as the dollar weakened against its major rivals, weighed down by weakening U.S. macroeconomic fundamentals. Tech and EV stocks tumbled as the U.S.-China trade truce risked falling apart over China's slow-walking on rare-earth exports and the U.S. curbs restricting the sale of chip design software, chemicals, other products to China. Investors also digested data that showed Chinese factory activity data contracted at a slower pace in May than the month prior. Japanese markets tumbled as a stronger yen due to rising uncertainties about trade issues weighed on export-related shares such as automakers. The Nikkei average fell 1.30 percent to 37,470.67 while the broader Topix index settled 0.87 percent lower at 2777.29. Mitsubishi Motors, Honda Motor and Toyota lost 2-3 percent. Chip-related stocks also declined, with Advantest tumbling 3.8 percent and Tokyo Electron falling 1.7 percent.
