Teachers' Day Awards: Four Educators Honoured For Exceptional Dedication
KUCHING, May 15 (Bernama) -- Four dedicated educators from diverse backgrounds were honoured with the highest accolades in education at the 54th National Teachers' Day Awards ceremony here, in recognition of their exceptional contributions to nurturing the nation's future generation.
Zarlina Ahmad, recipient of the 'Anugerah Khas Bitara Bahasa', was honoured for her efforts in championing the Malay language. Although she retired in 2016, her commitment to youth development remains undiminished.
She continues to play a vital role as a certified language expert with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and language workshop facilitator, with the aim of nurturing linguistic potential among students and the community.
'During my years of active teaching, I applied the fun learning and active communication approach to make the Malay language more engaging and meaningful for students,' said Zarlina, who served as a teacher for 30 years, when met by Bernama here today.
For Muhammad Nazmi Rosli, a teacher from Sekolah Kebangsaan Long Sebangang, Lawas, and recipient of the 'Anugerah Khas Menteri Pendidikan', he adopts a contextual learning approach to make lessons more appealing.
'This includes transforming the classroom environment into a swimming pool, beach or aircraft to offer an experience that is not only enjoyable but also meaningful to students. The aim is to increase student engagement and make learning more dynamic and practical.
'The main challenge in rural education is not the facilities, but the mindset of teachers and the need for empathy, patience, and passion in educating the children,' said Muhammad Nazmi, who was listed among the world's top 10 teachers in the Global Teacher Prize.
Meanwhile, Amirudin Razali from SMK Puteri Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, who was named 'Guru Ikon STEM', expressed hope that the recognition would inspire more STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) teachers to nurture talent and take students to the international stage.
He added that among the methods he often applies are outdoor learning and hands-on activities, which open up opportunities for practical exploration and spark creativity and problem-solving skills in students.
As for Nur Ameera Nabila Azmi, a young teacher from SK Padang Pekan, Jitra, Kedah, who received the 'Anugerah Guru Ikon Muda', she uses creative methods such as singing and movement in class to encourage student participation.
In addition, she actively records her students' talents and produces videos to share, aiming to boost their enthusiasm and interest in learning.

In Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, Muslim worshippers were shoulder-to-shoulder in the streets and the Istiqlal Grand Mosque was filled for morning prayers Friday. Eid al-Adha, known as the "Feast of Sacrifice,' coincides with the final rites of the annual Hajj in Saudi Arabia. It's a joyous occasion, for which food is a hallmark with devout Muslims buying and slaughtering animals and sharing two-thirds of the meat with the poor. Outside Jakarta, the Jonggol Cattle Market bustled with hundreds of cattle traders hoping to sell to buyers looking for sacrificial animals. While sales increased ahead of Eid, sellers said their businesses have lost customers in recent years due to economic hardship following the COVID-19 pandemic. A foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in 2022 to 2023 also significantly dampened the typically booming holiday trade in goats, cows and sheep, though Indonesia's government has worked to overcome that outbreak. Rahmat Debleng, one of the sellers in the market, said before the pandemic and the FMD outbreak, he could sell more than 100 cows two weeks ahead of Eid al-Adha. But on the eve of the celebration this year, only 43 of his livestock were sold, and six cows are still left in his stall. "Though the foot-and-mouth outbreak threats remain loom large, but the decline in sales is mostly because of economic hardship,' Debleng said. Jakarta city administration data recorded the number of sacrificial animals available this year at 35,133, a decline of 57% compared to the previous year. 108 MMEA Search And Rescue Ops Conducted Up To May
PUTRAJAYA, June 6 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has conducted 108 search and rescue (SAR) operations up to May and rescued 203 out of the 251 victims. MMEA director-general Admiral Maritime Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said that during the same period, 36 victims lost their lives while 12 more have not been found. Sharing the 2024 statistics, he said the MMEA recorded 226 cases via the search and rescue operations (Carilamat), involving 1,348 victims. "Of the total, the MMEA saved 1,259 lives, while 64 died and 25 still missing at sea,' he said in a statement issued today in conjunction with the Maritime Safety Awareness Day (HKKM), which has been celebrated since 2021. To enhance operational efficiency, Mohd Rosli said the MMEA has developed its own Carilamat standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure the efficiency, speed and safety of every rescue operation. He said that the responsibility of the team to lead SAR operations in the country's waters, including in the open sea, is stipulated in Sections 6(a) and 6(b) of the MMEA Act 2004 (Act 633), which clearly grants the MMEA the mandate to head SAR operations in the country. This mandate, he added, is reinforced by the National Security Council (NSC) Directive No. 20, which names the MMEA as the main agency for maritime disasters, based on the National SAR Manual (Namsar) as the primary reference. Mohd Rosli said there is no such thing as a "day off' for the MMEA because any emergency requires immediate action, regardless of time or weather conditions. "Assets such as patrol boats and helicopters are always on standby around the clock for deployment,' he said.

Tabung Haji (TH) Guidance Operations Director Shahrin Awaludin said the act of stoning, which involves throwing pebbles at three jamrahs, namely Jamrah Ula, Wusta and Kubra, carried out from the 10th to 13th Zulhijjah, also emulates the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad SAW and commemorates the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim A.S. "This stoning ritual symbolises the casting away of the mazmumah traits such as arrogance, defiance and all reprehensible qualities in oneself. It serves as a spiritual commitment for pilgrims to become better individuals after completing the haj pilgrimage,' he told reporters here. He said the stoning ritual not only demands physical effort, but is also a profound spiritual practice, closely aligned with the true essence of Haj, to return home with a purified soul and a heart fully submissive to Allah SWT. "Throwing the stones isn't merely a physical act, it's a declaration of the heart, a sincere pledge to change, to abandon sin, and to return to a pure, natural state," he said. Meanwhile, Shahrin said TH also organised a tazkirah (talk) session about Mina to help Malaysian pilgrims better understand the significance behind each ritual and obligation of the Haj, including the stoning of the Jamrah "TH conducted continuous guidance and tazkirah sessions for pilgrims after the Fajr and Zuhr prayers throughout their stay in Mina to remind them of the proper guidelines for worship, including the stone throwing of the Jamrah, the early tahalul, and the difference between nafar awal and nafar thani," he said. The pilgrims were also encouraged to make full use of their long stay in Mina by increasing their personal worship, such as performing sunnah prayers, reading the Quran, engaging in dhikr, and participating in other spiritually beneficial activities.
