Teachers' Day Awards: Four Educators Honoured For Exceptional Dedication
Zarlina Ahmad, recipient of the 'Anugerah Khas Bitara Bahasa', was honoured for her efforts in championing the Malay language. Although she retired in 2016, her commitment to youth development remains undiminished.
She continues to play a vital role as a certified language expert with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and language workshop facilitator, with the aim of nurturing linguistic potential among students and the community.
'During my years of active teaching, I applied the fun learning and active communication approach to make the Malay language more engaging and meaningful for students,' said Zarlina, who served as a teacher for 30 years, when met by Bernama here today.
For Muhammad Nazmi Rosli, a teacher from Sekolah Kebangsaan Long Sebangang, Lawas, and recipient of the 'Anugerah Khas Menteri Pendidikan', he adopts a contextual learning approach to make lessons more appealing.
'This includes transforming the classroom environment into a swimming pool, beach or aircraft to offer an experience that is not only enjoyable but also meaningful to students. The aim is to increase student engagement and make learning more dynamic and practical.
'The main challenge in rural education is not the facilities, but the mindset of teachers and the need for empathy, patience, and passion in educating the children,' said Muhammad Nazmi, who was listed among the world's top 10 teachers in the Global Teacher Prize.
Meanwhile, Amirudin Razali from SMK Puteri Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, who was named 'Guru Ikon STEM', expressed hope that the recognition would inspire more STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) teachers to nurture talent and take students to the international stage.
He added that among the methods he often applies are outdoor learning and hands-on activities, which open up opportunities for practical exploration and spark creativity and problem-solving skills in students.
As for Nur Ameera Nabila Azmi, a young teacher from SK Padang Pekan, Jitra, Kedah, who received the 'Anugerah Guru Ikon Muda', she uses creative methods such as singing and movement in class to encourage student participation.
In addition, she actively records her students' talents and produces videos to share, aiming to boost their enthusiasm and interest in learning.

Jalur Gemilang: A symbol of Malaysia's unity, national pride

She added that the Satu Rumah, Satu Jalur Gemilang initiative, first introduced by Japen on May 19, 2024, has been expanded to seven clusters this year to foster patriotism and love for the country among the people. She said the seven clusters were education, security, health, government agencies, higher education, community and industry. "It is hoped that this initiative will encourage widespread display of the Jalur Gemilang across homes, government buildings, businesses and public vehicles in celebration of National Day and Malaysia Day," said Hazlianayati. Themed "Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni", this year's National Day celebration will be held on Aug 31 at Dataran Putrajaya, with Malaysia Day celebrations taking place on Sept 16 in Penang. - Bernama

KL Speakers' Club welcomes 10 new members at 61st graduation
PETALING JAYA: The Kuala Lumpur Speakers' Club celebrated its 61st graduation ceremony today, officially welcoming 10 new members into its fold. The new inductees, dubbed the 'Vibrant Voices 2025,' successfully completed a rigorous 10-week public speaking programme. Club president Tunku Dara Tunku Tan Sri Naquiah Tuanku Ja'afar highlighted the dedication required to join the prestigious group. 'Members who join the club need to know public speaking because that is what it's all about,' she said during the event. She explained that prospective members must be nominated, interviewed, and complete the course before gaining full membership. The graduation ceremony was graced by Biduanita Negara Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin, who presented certificates to the graduates. Tunku Dara Naquiah praised Siti Nurhaliza as a national icon and inspiration for her contributions to music, business, and humanitarian work. She also thanked volunteer instructor Dr Baljit Kaur for her unwavering commitment to training the new members. 'It takes a lot of time and effort to make sure that everything is perfect,' Tunku Dara Naquiah added. Founded in 1970, the club began as an initiative by women who attended a public speaking course led by the late Begum Shaikh. Today, it serves as a platform for women to refine their communication skills and build lasting connections.
