Farmers collective alleges irregularities in functioning of Regulated Market Committee in Puducherry
The Bangaaru Vaickal Neeraadhara Koottamaippu, a farmers and water rights collective, has urged the Puducherry government to order a probe into alleged irregularities in the functioning of the Regulated Market Committee.
In a letter addressed to Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan, the president of the Association, V. Chandrasekhar, said that various irregularities and misappropriation of funds in the Regulated Market had come to light resulting in financial loss to the Puducherry government.
He said used gunny bags were purchased for the Regulated Market Committee in violation of Government rules and without approval of the Secretary to the Department of Agriculture. Though a similar irregularity was flagged by the Audit Department in 2021, no action has been taken yet.
According to Mr. Chandrasekhar, the Inspector of Licensed Premises (ILP) is responsible for cess collection, issue and renewal of trader licences in the committee. Normally, an Assistant Agricultural Officer from the department is appointed on deputation to this post. However, a junior-level officer from within the Committee has been given this responsibility.
The market cess collection has also drastically reduced over the years due to alleged financial mismanagement and administrative lapses. As a result, the Market Committee is now facing a severe financial crisis, he said.
The government should immediately intervene and order a thorough probe into the irregularities, Mr. Chandrasekhar said.

U.T. government's proposal to avail loan from World Bank, ADB in final stages of getting Finance Ministry's nod, says L-G
The Finance Ministry is in the final stages of giving approval to Puducherry government's proposal for availing loan to the tune of ₹8,000 crore from institutions such as World Bank, Asian Development Bank to implement infrastructure works in the Union Territory, Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan said on Tuesday. Participating in the Southern Regional Council meeting of the Confederation of Indian Industry in Puducherry, he said the government had proposed to avail loan from the financial institutions for carrying out infrastructure works, including drinking water and sewage management programmes with a long-term vision in mind. 'It's in the final stages of approval by the Finance Ministry,' he said. While speaking about the potential of the Union Territory for medical tourism considering the presence of nine medical institutions in a small geographical area as that of Puducherry, he said the government was taking proactive measures, including development of airport to attract patients from foreign countries for undergoing super speciality treatment in Puducherry medical colleges. 'Considerable progress has been made in taking forward the runway expansion project and there will be some concrete announcement by October with regard to the expansion work. I have also requested private medical colleges to come up with specific areas of development to tap medical tourism potential. I think we can make inroads into former French colonies to attract people for treatment,' he said. Recalling the earlier proposal of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) to establish a multi-organ transplant centre at Sedarapet, the Lt. Governor said the government had decided to give 50 acres of land to the institute for developing the facility. Later, the consent given for the land transfer was cancelled by the government, he said. 'I have requested the Cabinet to reconsider its decision to cancel the land allotment so that the project for setting up an organ transplant centre could be renewed,' Mr. Kailashnathan said. Laying emphasis on the need for focused attention on the fisheries sector, the Lt. Governor said the Union Territory had a huge potential to develop marine economy considering the region's vast shoreline. 'A few days ago, the Centre has sanctioned a Fish Processing Cluster in Karaikal. The cluster is of importance as the government has started promoting deep sea fishing in the Andaman coast for tuna fish. The Centre has promised to extend all support for promotion of the fisheries sector in the region,' he said. Acknowledging the limitations of Puducherry in industrial sector development due to lack of availability of government land, he said the industries should consider developing private industrial parks by buying land. The government would act as a facilitator in this regard, he said. When a CII member pointed out the difficulties faced by them in getting clearances, Mr. Kailashnathan said he was well aware of the situation. 'I came to know a DTP operator was holding on to his position in a panchayat even after a corruption case was registered against him. Then I had to issue a direction for his immediate suspension. In another case, I had to direct the Power Minister to sanction power connection to an industrialist who had been waiting for almost two years. We need to have changes and initiate policy reforms in a focused manner,' he said. The Lt. Governor added that 24 areas have been identified for ease of doing business. The government would table a bill which would then be sent for Centre's approval. The bill would about changes in the present industrial climate of Puducherry, Mr. Kailashnathan said.

"Op Sindoor is proof govt transformed India's security apparatus": Rajnath Singh
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 10 (ANI): Stressing that Rs 1.75 lakh crore defence production & Rs 30,000 crore defence exports targets are set for this year, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Tuesday, emphasised that in the last 11 years, the Government has transformed India's security apparatus by changing the attitude towards every issue related to national security. Addressing a dialogue on the topic 'National Security & Terrorism', organised in Dehradun, Uttarakhand today, Singh said, 'In the last 11 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Government has transformed India's security apparatus by changing the attitude and the way of action towards every issue related to national security, and the world witnessed this shift during Operation Sindoor.' He described Operation Sindoor as the biggest action taken against terrorism in Indian history, which was carried out in response to the cowardly terror attack on innocent people in Pahalgam. 'Following the abrogation of Article 370, J-K heralded into the era of peace and progress. Our neighbours could not tolerate this and executed the terror attack in Pahalgam. Despite Pakistan's best efforts, it has not been able to stop development in Kashmir. Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link is a shining example of the Government's relentless pursuit of progress in J&K. Soon, PoK will join us and say 'I, too, am Bharat',' Rajnath Singh asserted. Rajnath Singh asserted that while the Indian Armed Forces have given a befitting reply to terrorists, it is imperative to prevent terror incidents such as the one in Pahalgam in future. He emphasised on the need to be alert not just at the level of governments, but also at the public level. Branding terrorism as an epidemic destined to perish, the Defence Minister stressed that the menace cannot be left to die a natural death as its existence will continue to challenge collective peace, development and prosperity. He underscored the urgent need for a permanent solution to terrorism. 'Terrorists are not fighters with a cause. No religious, ideological or political reason can justify terrorism. No human objective can ever be achieved through bloodshed and violence. India and Pakistan attained independence at the same time, but today, India has been recognised as the Mother of Democracy, while Pakistan has emerged as the Father of Global Terrorism. Pakistan has always given shelter to terrorists, trained them on its soil and helped them. It always tries to justify this menace. It is important that we eliminate these terrorists and their entire infrastructure,' said Rajnath Singh. Singh urged the international community to stop foreign funding to Pakistan, saying that a large part of this financial aid is spent on terrorism. 'Funding Pakistan means funding the infrastructure of terrorism. Pakistan is a nursery of terrorism. It should not be nourished,' he added. The Defence Minister called upon the global community and organisations such as the United Nations to think on issues like terrorism more seriously, stating that 'Only when we are free from terrorism, will we be able to move towards the goal of global peace, progress and prosperity.' Further, Rajnath Singh listed out the steps taken by the Government to strengthen the defence sector, including increasing the defence budget from Rs 2.53 lakh crore in Financial Year (FY) 2013-14 to Rs 6,22 lakh crore in FY 2024-25; reserving 75% of the budget for capital procurement from domestic companies and the issuance of a total of 10 Positive Indigenisation Lists, comprising over 5,500 items. 'Today, Indian Armed Forces use state-of-the-art weapons, missiles, tanks and other systems/platforms manufactured within the country. Our indigenous missiles such as Agni, Prithvi & BrahMos stand ready to give a befitting reply to the enemy. We also have the strength to build aircraft carriers such as INS Vikrant,' he added. He underlined that the Government's persistent efforts are bearing fruit as the annual defence production, which was around Rs 40,000 crore in 2014, has crossed the record figure of Rs 1.30 lakh crore today, and defence exports, which were Rs 686 crore in 14, has skyrocketed to Rs 23,622 crore in FY 2024-25, adding that Made-in-India defence products are being exported to nearly 100 countries. 'We have set a target of Rs 1.75 lakh crore defence production this year and Rs three lakh crore by 2029. Our defence exports should reach Rs 30,000 crore this year and Rs 50,000 crore by 2029,' Singh said. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was among the dignitaries who attended the event. Chief Minister Dhami presented the Prasad of the four Dhams to Rajnath Singh at Jolly Grant Airport on his departure from Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. During this, the Chief Minister also presented him millets products of 'House of Himalayas', an umbrella brand of local products of Uttarakhand. (ANI)

Single window clearance for clearances to film shootings in the offing
Hyderabad The Telangana Government has focused its attention on developing Hyderabad as a hub of film related activities. Accordingly, the government has decided to establish a single window clearance system for giving permissions to film shootings. In addition, a dedicated officer from the Film Development Corporation would be appointed to coordinate and expedite all required departmental approvals through this single window system. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka announced this during a meeting with senior officials on Tuesday. He has directed the Information Department and Film Development Corporation officials to prepare a detailed project report in this direction for transforming the city into a film capital. Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka is heading a cabinet subcommittee comprising Ministers Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and D. Sridhar Babu as members. The meeting discussed issues relating to promotion of the city as a film capital. Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka said that the government envisaged the development of Hyderabad as a film city to attract major personalities from the film industry, both from across the country and abroad. At present, those who want to shoot films in the state should obtain separate permissions from various departments like the police, fire, and municipal administration which was causing difficulties to film producers. The Deputy Chief Minister said filming in various tourist destinations across the state would also contribute to the growth of the tourism sector. He expressed concern that exorbitant charges were being levied on food and other items being sold at canteens in cinema theatres. This was causing hardship for common people. He instructed officials to take steps to regulate prices so that common people were not inconvenienced. Recalling that the Government had allocated 50 acre land to the Film Development Corporation in the past, the sub-committee directed officials to prepare a report on the current status of this land by the next meeting. He directed the officials to organise the Telangana Gaddar Film Awards, scheduled to be held on June 14 in a grand and unprecedented manner and invitations should be extended to all prominent personalities in the country, especially those from film industry.
