KSE-100 gains over 500 points on Pakistan's credit rating upgrade

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed on a positive note on Friday, as investors cheered S&P Global's upgrade of Pakistan's sovereign credit rating to 'B—' from 'CCC+'.
At close, the benchmark index settled at 139,207.29, up by 514.62 points or 0.37%.
Top positive contribution to the index came from ENGROH, UBL, LUCK, MEBL, NBP, ATLH & SYS, as they cumulatively contributed 541 points to the index, brokerage house Topline Securities said in its post-market report.
In a key development, S&P Global raised Pakistan's sovereign credit rating to 'B-' from 'CCC+' and placed it on a 'stable' outlook on Thursday, saying the country's finances and reserves had been stabilised by International Monetary Fund support.
'The S&P upgrade, coming shortly after Fitch raised its rating in Apr'25, is expected to enhance investor confidence, reduce external borrowing costs, and improve Pakistan's prospects of re-entering international bond markets,' said Arif Habib Limited (AHL).
Moreover, the market anticipates a policy rate cut in the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) scheduled to be held on Wednesday.
'As the SBP meets on July 30, 2025, we expect a 50bps rate cut to bring the policy rate down to 10.5%,' said AHL.
'With inflation down, the external position currently in a manageable zone, and yields already on a downward slope, conditions seem ripe for further monetary easing, though some risks cast a shadow,' it said.
On Thursday, PSX witnessed a bearish trend as investor confidence took a hit due to mounting macroeconomic concerns. Surging inflation, coupled with the expected rupee slide on higher imports, further fueled the negative sentiments. The KSE-100 lost 561.69 points, or 0.40%, to settle at 138,692.67 points.
The KSE-100 Index increased by 0.44% on week-on-week (WoW) basis.
Internationally, Asian shares eased from highs on Friday, with Japanese markets retreating from a record peak, as investors locked in profits ahead of a crucial week that includes US President Donald Trump's tariff deadline and a host of central bank meetings.
The dollar gained against the yen after bouncing off a two-week low on Thursday, helped by some firm US economic data, while Japan's currency was weighed down by political uncertainty amid media reports Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will step down.
Benchmark Japanese government bond yields hovered just below the highest since 2008.
Japan's broad Topix index, which had jumped more than 5% over the previous two sessions to reach an all-time high, pulled back 0.7%.
The Nikkei slipped 0.5% from Thursday's one-year high.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.5% and mainland Chinese blue chips declined 0.2%. Australia's equity benchmark declined 0.5%.
At the same time, US S&P 500 futures added 0.2%, after the cash index edged up slightly to a new record closing high overnight, buoyed by robust earnings from Google parent Alphabet.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq also marked a record high.
MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe edged down 0.1%, but remained just below an all-time peak from Thursday.

DOGE deploys AI to target thousands of federal regulations

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is reportedly using a new artificial intelligence tool aimed at significantly reducing the number of federal regulations. According to a report by The Washington Post, a PowerPoint presentation dated 1 July outlines that the DOGE AI Deregulation Decision Tool is designed to analyse approximately 200,000 existing federal regulations. Its objective: to identify rules no longer required by law and facilitate the removal of half of them by the first anniversary of President Donald Trump's return to office. The document suggests that the initiative is already in motion. According to the presentation, the tool has been deployed to review regulations at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and was responsible for drafting '100% of deregulations' at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Although the White House has not formally endorsed the full scope of the plan, a spokesperson acknowledged the work underway. DOGE has built an AI tool to slash federal regulations | TechCrunch — TechCrunch (@TechCrunch) July 27, 2025 'No single plan has been approved or greenlit,' they stated, adding that the DOGE team represents 'the best and brightest in the business.' The AI tool is the latest in a line of technologies developed under the DOGE umbrella, a body that was initially led by Elon Musk during the early months of Trump's current term. Previous systems attributed to DOGE have drawn scrutiny, including a tool designed to process Veterans Affairs contracts that was found to generate inflated or fictitious figures. The current effort forms part of a wider push to streamline federal oversight and reshape the role of government in key regulatory sectors. While critics have raised concerns about transparency and potential overreach, supporters argue that the initiative could lead to increased efficiency and economic agility. As of now, the administration has not provided a detailed breakdown of which regulations could be eliminated or how AI decisions are being validated.

Yuan touches one-month low as investors await Sino-US trade talk

SHANGHAI: China's yuan touched a one-month low against the U.S. dollar in early trade on Monday but reversed most of its loss by midday, as investors awaited details from tariff talks as well as from the Politburo's July meeting to gauge the currency's direction. Chinese and U.S. officials will resume tariff talks in Stockholm on Monday to tackle economic disputes at the centre of their trade war, with the aim of extending a truce by three months and keeping sharply higher U.S. tariffs at bay. 'Considering the recent tariff announcements - 15% for US allies, 20% for ASEAN countries, and 40% for transshipping goods - there is limited scope for substantial tariff reductions in the Stockholm negotiations,' said analyst Liang Ding at researcher Macro Hive. The onshore yuan touched 7.1897 a dollar shortly after market open, its lowest since June 23. Ding said the yuan has been supported over the past week by a robust equity market and strong central bank fixes - the point around which the bank allows the yuan to trade. Still, the yuan could face renewed pressure as trade flows are set to become less favourable for non-U.S. countries in the coming months as U.S. tariff uncertainty dissipates and the 'sell U.S.' narrative may lose momentum, Ding said. The spot yuan opened at 7.1670 a dollar and last traded at 7.169 as of 0312 GMT, 10 pips lower than the previous late session close and 0.31% weaker than the midpoint. Prior to market open, the People's Bank of China set its midpoint rate at 7.1467 a dollar, 186 pips firmer than a Reuters' estimate. The PBOC allows spot yuan to trade 2% either side of the midpoint each day. Domestically, investors are awaiting details of the July Politburo meeting as well as manufacturing activity data due this week. 'We think the government is likely to keep a supportive macro policy tone, but the urgency and likelihood of rolling out major additional stimulus measures are low, given the robust Q2 GDP growth,' said UBS economists in a client note. The government may elaborate on efforts to curb involution competition, discuss measures to stabilise the housing market, and offer preliminary information about its new five-year plan, they said. The offshore yuan traded at 7.1695 yuan a dollar, down about 0.01% in Asian trading hours. The yuan is down 0.1% against the dollar this month but 1.8% firmer this year. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the euro, was 0.010% higher at 97.62. The U.S. agreed a trade framework with the European Union on Sunday, imposing a 15% import tariff on most EU goods.

India bonds dip as wary traders sell before US, domestic cenbank policy

MUMBAI: Indian government bonds fell in early deals on Monday, as traders nervously sold debt ahead of rate decisions by the United States and Indian central banks, and as the market lacked fresh positive cues to spur buying. The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond was at 6.3603% as of 10:35 a.m. IST, compared with Friday's close of 6.3505% and up nearly 8 basis points since last week. Bond yields move inversely to prices. Indian bond yields continued to rise after Friday's selloff, when Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra's commentary in an interview with the Financial Express trimmed rate cut bets in the market. 'Investors expecting an August rate cut are shedding positions after the Governor's comments on Friday, so the selling pressure is expected to continue,' a trader at a state-run bank said. '6.38% is a key technical level for the 10-year benchmark this week.' Traders will closely eye any change in the RBI's inflation and growth forecasts to gauge its interest rate trajectory, they said. The RBI is set to announce its policy decision on August 6. Focus is also on the US Federal Reserve's policy decision, due on Wednesday, in which the central bank is widely expected to keep the rates unchanged, traders said. US yields have also hurt sentiments in the domestic market. The US 10-year bond yield was at 4.3899% in Asian hours, having risen nearly 6 basis points since last week.
