Salalah: The third edition of the Summer School for faculty members of higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman kicked off on Sunday in Dhofar Governorate.
Organised by Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) under the theme 'The Integration of Emotional and Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education," the six-day event is being held at Rotana Salalah Hotel.
The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of Dr. Ahmed Mohsen Al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, in the presence of several officials and academic faculty members from higher education institutions.
The Summer School is part of Sultan Qaboos University's efforts to support academic development and promote academic tourism during Khareef Dhofar (monsoon) season. It brings together 50 academics and professionals from six higher education institutions across Oman.
The Summer School's agenda features interactive workshops, panel discussions, and meetings with local and international experts, aiming to enrich participants' knowledge and raise awareness about fostering future-ready communities through the integration of emotional and artificial intelligence in higher education.
Sultan Qaboos University continues to leverage such initiatives to promote a culture of academic excellence and enhance faculty preparedness in adapting to modern educational shifts, aligning with Oman's aspirations for a resilient and integrated higher education system.

Beloved Indian School Seeb teacher Lekha Jackson passes away at 53

MUSCAT: The Indian School Al Seeb (ISAS) community is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved teachers, Ms. Lekha Jackson, who passed away on July 21, 2025, at the age of 53. A dedicated educator and passionate music teacher, Ms. Jackson left an indelible mark on generations of students and colleagues during her long and impactful tenure at the Seeb campus. Ms. Jackson joined the school on August 11, 2006, and over nearly two decades became a cornerstone of the teaching faculty, known for her warmth, creativity, and unwavering commitment to her students. In February this year, she was diagnosed with cancer, prompting her return to India to undergo treatment. Despite her battle with the illness, she remained optimistic and in close contact with her school family, who continued to extend their love and prayers. "She was more than just a teacher —she was a mentor, a friend, and a source of inspiration to all who knew her," said one of the teachers at ISAS. "Her passion for teaching and art, and her gentle, compassionate spirit, will always be remembered." The Indian School board of directors and ISAS family extend their deepest condolences to her family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Oman receives certificate for inscription of 'Al-Nūniyya Al-Kubrā' in UNESCO's Memory of World Programme

Paris: The Sultanate of Oman has officially received the certificate of inscription for the manuscript 'Al-Nūniyya Al-Kubrā' (The Great Ode) by the renowned Omani navigator Ahmed bin Majid into UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme. The handover took place during a meeting between Amna Salim Al Balushi, Oman's Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, and Dr. Tawfik Jelassi, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, at the organisation's headquarters in Paris, France. This achievement crowns the joint efforts of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, in collaboration with the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, and the Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, to highlight the manuscript's historical and scientific value. Al-Nūniyya Al-Kubrā is considered one of the most significant works in the fields of navigation and maritime sciences. The manuscript is distinguished by its advanced geographical vision, proposing a novel division of the Earth into fourteen regions encompassing both hemispheres—surpassing the traditional division limited to seven regions in the Northern Hemisphere alone. It also contains detailed descriptions of the societies encountered by the author and his navigational crew, alongside rich documentation of maritime life, including marine species and natural phenomena. It is worth mentioning that UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme, launched in 1992, aims to safeguard humanity's documentary heritage from loss and oblivion. Its selection criteria emphasize authenticity, rarity, historical significance, and cross-border cultural and social impact.
