KIBG 2025: Pencak Silat gold medallists Kirtana, Prasanna, Thomas express delight after special win
Diu (Daman and Diu) [India], May 21 (ANI): Kirtana Acharya, Prasanna Bendre and Princess Thomas, who stood at the top podium ranking following their gold medal triumphs in different categories of Pencak Silat at the Khelo India Beach Games 2025, described their feelings and laid out their future goals and ambitions.
Pencak Silat is a form of Indonesian martial art, and it was great to see a Union Territory hemmed by the Arabian Sea excelling in the open competition at these Games. Hometown favourite, Kirtana Manojkumar Acharya, struck gold in the senior female category.
Kirtana expressed her delight and told ANI, 'I feel good. It was a pleasant experience for me. It has come after a lot of hard work and consistency. Thanks to my coach, who always supported me.'
While trying to express her feelings of claiming gold in front of her home crowd, Kirtana is targeting international medals, emphasising the importance of KIBG for athletes.
'I cannot explain this feeling. It is a very proud moment for me to represent my state. I cannot express much in words. I am proud that I can perform with good elegance and a smile,' Kirtana said.
'My next target is winning international medals, and I am going for it. It is a very good opportunity for us athletes. It is important to perform and fight in such competitions,' she concluded.
Another local hero, Prasanna Bendre of Daman and Diu, won the gold in the senior men's tunggal (artistic) event. Bendre is the most accomplished player in the region, with a silver medal and two bronze medals from international events.
He won the silver in the 2022 Asian championship in Jammu and Kashmir, while his two bronze medals came in the 2024 Asian championship in Dubai and the 2024 world championship in Abu Dhabi. Bendre believes the sport's inclusion in Khelo India is 'beneficial' for the athletes.
'It is a very proud moment for me. Khelo India is a very good platform. Since Pencak Silat has been added to Khelo India, it will be very beneficial for us. It is a big thing to win a gold medal at such a big stage. I am very happy about it,' he said.
Princess Thomas, another gold medal winner in Pencak Silat, expressed her emotions and said, 'It feels amazing, it feels exhilarating because this is my first gold medal. It was a nervy affair, but it was great and amazing. I am speechless. It was nice because I wasn't expecting it to be that way.' (ANI)

Asian champion 100m hurdler Jyothi Yarraji leads India's 6-gold show in Taiwan Open
Asian champion Jyothi Yarraji won the women's 100m hurdles race with yet another impressive time as India won six gold medals in the Taiwan Open international athletics competition here on Saturday. National record holder Yarraji clocked 12.99 seconds to pocket the gold at the Taipei Municipal Stadium, ahead of Japanese runners Asuka Terada (13.04 seconds) and Chisato Kiyoyama (13.10 seconds), who took the silver and bronze respectively. The 25-year-old Yarraji had won gold in the Asian Championships in South Korea on May 29 with a time of 12.96 seconds. Her national record stands at 12.78 seconds. Another national record holder, Tejas Shirse also won gold in the men's 110m hurdles, clocking 13.52 seconds, the second fastest time of his career. Local athletes Hsieh Yuan-kai (13.72 seconds) and Kuei-Ru Chen (13.75 seconds) won the silver and bronze respectively. The 23-year-old Shirse's national record stands 13.41 seconds. India's best 4x100m relay quartet of Gurindervir Singh, Animesh Kujur, Manikanta Hoblidhar and Amlan Borgohain won gold, clocking 38.75 seconds, just six-hundredth of a second outside of the national record of 38.69 seconds set by the same team at the National Relay Carnival in Chandigarh earlier this year. But, it fell short of the timing which would have taken the team to Tokyo World Championships. Fourteen countries have already qualified for the World Championships in September through the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China in May and only two slots are available. Nigeria and Netherlands are currently in the reckoning for the two slots with 38.20 seconds. The Indian team of Sudheeksha Vadluri, Sneha Sathyanarayana Shanuvalli, Abinaya Rajarajan and Nithya Gandhe won gold in the women's 4x100m relay, clocking 44.06 seconds. The national record in this event stands at 43.37 seconds clocked by the quartet of Archana S, Dhanalakshmi, Hima Das and Dutee Chand in 2021. Abdulla Aboobacker and Pooja also won gold in the men's triple jump and women's 1500m respectively. Aboobacker jumped 16.21m, well below his personal best of 17.19m. Pooja, who had won a silver in the Asian Championships in South Korea last month, clocked 4 minutes, 11.63 seconds to win the gold. She has a personal best of 4:09.52 which she had clocked in 2023.

Mark Boucher handpicks two youngsters who can be key to SA's success in WTC final
New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): Former Proteas head coach Mark Boucher believes that if South Africa can gun down the reigning World Test Champions, Australia, it could mark the beginning of a new era. He also identified two youngsters who could be the key to their success in the upcoming final at Lord's. South Africa earned a spot in the WTC final after winning seven consecutive Tests and finished at the top of the table standings. After getting a shot at ending their trophy drought, South Africa found itself surrounded by criticism, considering they had just played 12 fixtures to fight for the WTC mace. 'A lot of people have criticised South Africa, which is not really fair. You play what's in front of you, and with all due respect, the sides that we've played against, we probably should have beaten, and we've done that. So we find ourselves in a final. But I wouldn't say that it has got the crowds going in our country,' Boucher told ESPNcricinfo during the IPL. 'Everyone's very excited about it now as the opportunity arises, a lot of people are going to travel over to London, spend all their Rands and go watch what should be a good match. If we win it, I think then that could be the turnaround for Test cricket in our country,' he added. During the buildup to the high-stakes contest, fans and many former cricketers deemed Australia the on-paper favourites. After years of faltering in the semi-finals of the ICC events, Boucher believes it is time to get rid of the 'chokers' tag. 'We're playing for a trophy, so I guess a lot of people are saying no [we can't win], but I think it's a different feel in Test match cricket,' he said. 'Ryan Rickelton has been playing nicely for Mumbai Indians (MI) and he was actually on the tour that we went to England [in 2022] as well. He's actually played quite a few games in England as well, so he'll know the conditions,' Boucher said. 'And Tristan Stubbs has come back and played a lot of domestic cricket and basically forced his way into the Test side because of the runs that he's got. On paper, Australia will probably feel that they've got a better batting line-up than what we have, but have we got the attitude to go out there and in a one-off game, just leave it all out there? Absolutely,' he added. 21st Delhi International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament inaugurated; Minister Parvesh Verma lauds young talent
New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): The 21st edition of the Delhi International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament was officially inaugurated in the national capital, marking a significant occasion in the Indian chess calendar. Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma praised India's up-and-coming chess players at the event and offered his best wishes to the young players. Minister Verma said at the inauguration, 'The first Grandmaster Delhi Chess Tournament has been inaugurated. I convey my best wishes to all the children. India is very proud of the achievements of all our children, whether it is our Gukesh (Dommaraju) or Vaishali (Rameshbabu).' He further praised the organisers' and the chess fraternity's efforts in nurturing young talent and bringing the game to such a prominent stage. 'Many congratulations to all, and I convey my best wishes to the Federation and the Association for organising such a good tournament here at such a good level,' he added. With a record prize pool of Rs 1.21 crore, the Delhi International Open Grandmasters chess tournament is all set for its 21st edition from June 7 to 14 at Tivoli Gardens, Chattarpur, New Delhi. A marquee calendar event on the FIDE World Championship Circuit, the tournament has played a pivotal role in shaping the rise of India's chess stars, including past winners Arjun Erigaisi and Aravindh Chithambaram, R Praggnanandhaa, and World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, who earned his final GM norm here to become a Grandmaster. Organised under the aegis of the All India Chess Federation, the Delhi GM Open has grown into the largest classical-format chess tournament in Asia by participation. This year, the Delhi GM Open will host over 2,500 players from over 15 countries, including 20 Grandmasters, competing across three rating-based categories. The prize pool marks a 168 per cent increase from last year's edition. Category A has a Rs 51 lakh prize pool and is open to internationally rated players. Categories B and C, for players rated below 1900 and 1700, respectively, will offer Rs 35 lakh each. All matches will follow FIDE rules and the FIDE Swiss System format, with 10 rounds in every section. Category A games will follow a classical time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one, with the top three prizes set at Rs7,00,000, Rs6,00,000, and Rs5,00,000 respectively. The top ten finishers in this category will each receive Rs 1,00,000 or more, while special prizes of Rs 1,00,000 each will be awarded to the Best Female Player and Best Foreign Player. Category B and C games will follow a 60-minute-plus-30-second time limit and 30-minute-plus-30-second formats, respectively. Entry is free for Grandmasters, International Masters, Women Grandmasters, and Women International Masters. (ANI)
