Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate projects worth over Rs 600 crore in Varanasi during his proposed visit to his parliamentary constituency on Aug 2. He will also lay the foundation for many projects worth over Rs 1,650 crore.
The projects to be inaugurated include the Sowa Rigpa Medical College located in the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies campus in Sarnath and the Varanasi-Bhadohi 4-lane road.
Modi's public meeting venue, from where he would inaugurate the projects, has been selected at Kalikadham in Sevapuri assembly constituency. Busy finalising the list of the projects for inauguration and for the launch, divisional commissioner S Rajalingam, informed TOI on Tuesday, "The list of the ready projects is long.
Major big-budget projects include the Varanasi-Bhadohi four-lane road of over Rs 270 crore, the Sowa Rigpa Medical College of about Rs 93 crore, a blue astroturf hockey field at BR Ambedkar Stadium in Lalpur area, and the Khadi and Village Industries Commission's office building at Teliabagh.
So far, the list comprises projects of almost Rs 600 crore."Among the projects for which PM Modi will lay the foundation, he said the major one is the project for restructuring and reforming the power infrastructure of the city with a budget of approximately Rs 800 crore.

This will include revamping hanging wires, bamboo poles, and many more works. Apart from others, a project for establishing a museum at Munshi Premchand's house and road construction works are also being included. The total cost of projects in both the is approximately Rs 2,258 crore, he said. The district administration has also increased monitoring of the preparations being made for the PM Modi's public meeting at Kalikadham in Sevapuri area.
On Monday evening, district magistrate Satyendra took stock of the progress in the work, including levelling of fields, stage construction, parking, and the helipad area. He asked that all link roads leading to the public meeting venue must be repaired.
The officials started work after seeking no-objection from the owners of fields selected for the public meeting venue. Bharatiya Janata Party functionaries, who took stock of the area on Sunday evening, started holding meetings to assign the responsibilities for different works, including mobilising people for their participation and other arrangements, said BJP Kashi regional unit president Dilip Patel.

SIR: EC gets 7.24cr responses, faces flak over 57L likely deletions
Patna: The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday said it received enumeration forms from over 91.69% of the Bihar's 7.89 crore electors even as its special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state has come under intense criticism from political leaders, academics and civil society members. The controversy arose from the EC's revelation that around 57 lakh electors have been marked as either "untraceable" or "dead" during the drive, raising serious concerns over the methodology and execution of the exercise. While the EC hailed the participation as significant, highlighting that 7.24 crore forms were collected, including 29 lakh submitted online, critics argued that the exclusion of such a large number of electors indicates potential systemic flaws in voter roll maintenance. "The untraceable section of 35 lakh electors are none other than our own migrant workers who have struggled for existence for years," said DM Diwakar, former director of A N Sinha Institute of Social Studies. "These people could not return home to submit documents manually or online. This is a denial of their constitutional right," he added. "As per Para 5(b) of SIR guidelines, no name can be deleted without notice and a speaking order of the ERO/AERO," the EC said, adding that any elector aggrieved by a decision may appeal to the district magistrate and subsequently to the chief electoral officer. Despite these assurances, scepticism abounds. "While the EC claims to increase voter participation, it is ruthlessly deleting names without giving people time or opportunity," said Diwakar. "No one can be deprived of voting rights due to lack of documents," he added. CPI-ML state secretary Kunal accused the EC of carrying out a "deletion campaign" rather than a revision. "SIR kuchh aur nahin, balki chhatni abhiyan hai," he said, citing the example of Khopira village in Bhojpur district where the number of registered voters dropped from 1,200 to 911 after the revision. "Three hundred villagers had only temporarily migrated for work, but they were wrongly marked as permanently gone," he alleged. RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan questioned the EC's count of 22 lakh deceased voters. "How can 22 lakh people die within six months of the last summary revision in January?" he asked, pointing out that only 12.43 lakh deaths were recorded in Bihar between 2022 and 2024, according to official state data. "Where has this inflated death toll come from?" Gagan also expressed concern over the fate of nearly 45% of Bihar's electorate who reportedly lack any of the 11 identity documents required by the EC. "Deletion of their names looks inevitable," he said. The EC defended its outreach, saying that it issued full-page advertisements in 246 newspapers across India and instructed state CEOs to reach out to temporarily migrated Bihar workers. "Meetings were also held with political parties and BLOs engaged with booth level agents to facilitate form submissions. Each BLA was permitted to file up to 50 enumeration forms daily to ensure full party involvement," the EC said on Sunday. The commission added the scrutiny of received forms would continue till Aug 1 and the claims and objections period would run from Aug 1 to Sept 1. Volunteers are being trained to assist in filing appeals and a standardised format for this will be widely circulated.
