Seat-sharing: Allies may bargain hard with RJD

Time of Indiaa day ago

Patna: Amid mounting pressure from its allies, the RJD, headed by Lalu Prasad, has planned to leave a maximum of 103 seats for its three allies—the Congress, Left and Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), sources said.

While the Congress and the Left have been trusted allies of the RJD, the VIP became a part of the opposition INDIA bloc just ahead of last year's Lok Sabha polls.
A top source in the RJD said on Wednesday that under no circumstances would the party contest less than 140 seats in the upcoming assembly polls since "our target is to form the next govt." He said the RJD could spare a maximum of 50-55 seats for the Congress, 30-35 seats for the entire Left (comprising CPI-ML, CPI, and CPI-M), and 12-20 seats for the VIP.
The Bihar assembly has a total of 243 seats.
"Moreover, we will give seats to our allies considering the winnability of the candidates," the source said, adding, "Their mission will be to win the seats." "As far as RJD is concerned, we have to win 100 plus seats at any cost," the source said, wishing not to be identified.
The revelation came amid the allies putting pressure for more seats. Of them, the VIP and the CPI-ML have expressed their demands through various forums.
While the VIP staked a claim for 60 seats, the CPI-ML wanted at least 40-50 seats.
In the last 2020 assembly polls, the CPI-ML put up an impressive performance, winning 12 out of 19 seat it was offered under the seat-sharing deal. The VIP was not a part of the opposition alliance, although as part of the NDA, it won four seats out of 11 it was given under the deal.
At a party meeting held in Sitamarhi, the VIP chief again raked up the demand for 60 seats.

Similarly, CPI-ML general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya demanded 40-50 seats to contest this time. "We are preparing to contest 40-50 seats this time, although the issue will be discussed at the INDIA bloc meeting," Bhattacharya told the reporters on Tuesday.
On the other hand, the Congress has intensified its activities in the state and is strategically working to win as many seats as possible.
The RJD said the allies have every right to make a demand for seats in a democracy. "They have every right to demand more seats. The seat-sharing is no issue for us. It will be settled in a cordial manner," state RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav said.

Be agents of change: Birla to civil servants

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today asserted that bringing positive change in people's lives should be the guiding objective for civil servants. He urged officials to embrace innovation and transparency as effective tools in governance to ensure societal betterment and fulfill the expectations of the common people. Addressing the valedictory function of the 127th Induction Training Programme at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie on Thursday, Speaker Birla stated, 'Bringing positive change in people's lives must be the guiding objective for every civil servant.' Revenue from liquor cess meant for social welfare In a landmark step aimed at bolstering social welfare, the Uttarakhand government has announced that 1% of the revenue collected from the cess on the sale of English liquor will now go towards the welfare of vulnerable sections of society. The move, approved by the state Cabinet, will help channel funds for the upliftment of orphaned and destitute children, adolescent girls and economically disadvantaged, homeless and elderly women who have been affected by disasters or accidents. The CM's women and child multi-faceted assistance fund rules outline the meticulous process for disbursing these crucial funds. BJP's Joshi flags threat to Gangotri eco zone Veteran BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi has strongly objected to the presence of a waste incinerator at Gangotri National Park near the Gangotri Temple. This plant, he contends, violates regulations meant for eco-sensitive zones, where industrial activities are prohibited. The facility reportedly emits toxic gases, posing a direct threat to the fragile Himalayan ecosystem and its biodiversity. Flagging the risk of environmental degradation, Joshi has urged Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav for urgent action. Siddaramaiah rekindles debate on dividing Belagavi

Belagavi: Chief minister Siddaramaiah added fuel to a long-standing debate over the division of Belagavi district, the largest in Karnataka, by suggesting the demand for new districts exists only in Belagavi. He said the issue would be addressed after consultations with local MLAs and the district-in-charge minister. Siddaramaiah spoke on the issue during a public address in Gauribidanur Wednesday, adding momentum to renewed calls for the district's trifurcation. His remarks follow public works minister Satish Jarkiholi's open support for a division recently. Jarkiholi said splitting the district into three would lead to more efficient administration. There was widespread anticipation that the govt would announce the creation of new districts — Chikkodi and Gokak — during the legislature session in Belagavi in Dec 2024. Several seers, civic leaders, and local organisations submitted representations demanding the division. However, the govt's inaction disappointed many. Belagavi is the most populous district in the state, with an estimated population of nearly 55 lakh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Over 40 and Struggling With Belly Fat? Proponents of the division argue that new districts would bring administration closer to the people and attract more developmental funds. Currently, people in many taluks, including Athani, Yadawad, Raibag, Chikkodi, Mudalagi, and Ramdurg, travel 100–200km to reach the district headquarters. Demands to divide the district are not new. As far back as 1997, the Vasudev Rao, Hundekar, and PC Gaddigoudar committees recommended carving out Chikkodi as a separate district. However, the move was shelved after strong opposition from pro-Kannada organisations, who feared it would strengthen Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti's influence. They insist that no division should take place until the Supreme Court settles the Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute. Reacting to Siddaramaiah's comments, Chikodi Zilla Horata Samiti president Sanju Badiger told TOI: "We cannot welcome or oppose the CM's remarks. Over decades, several govts have made similar promises without action. We want results — not more words." Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Ajit Pawar returns to sugar co-op poll after 40 yrs

1 2 3 Pune: Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has returned to the politically charged world of sugar cooperatives election after almost 40 years, filing his own nomination for the Malegaon mills. He will be one among the 90 candidates in the fray for 21 seats to the Malegaon sugar mill board, which has been under the control of the deputy CM himself for the last few decades. The Malegaon sugar mill is located in the stronghold of Pawars in Baramati and the win in the election is considered prestigious and essential for the family to continue its dominance in the sugar cooperative sector, while also sending a strong message to opponents. Meanwhile, this is for the first time that election to the particular sugar mill is being held after the split in the Pawar family and the NCP. The deadline for withdrawal of the nominations ended at 3pm on Thursday, after which 90 candidates, including Ajit Pawar, remained in the fray. Speaking to TOI, election officer Yashwant Mane said, "Members of the Malegaon sugar mill belong to 37 villages of Baramati and there are around 20,000 voters. Voting will be held on June 22 to elect a body of 21 board members." The counting of votes is on June 24 and the results will be declared later in the day, according to election officials. Ajit Pawar contested his first election in the cooperative sector in 1984 for the Chhatrapati sugar mill, before he was introduced to mainstream politics by uncle Sharad Pawar. However, after contesting the Lok Sabha election in 1991 from the Baramati seat and kicking off his political career, Pawar never went back to contest sugar mill elections. He has handled various important portfolios in various govts and held the position of deputy CM for a record six times. He is influential in the sugar cooperative sector and ensures his panel remains on the board of directors every time. However, this time, after a long gap of over 40 years, Pawar has decided to contest the sugar cooperative poll himself. According to his close associates, he made the deliberate choice to maintain his dominance in the sugar mill circuit. "Over the last five years, opposition was accusing the Pawar-backed elected body of mismanagement and corruption. That apart, there is an NCP (SP) faction which will also be contesting the election — making it tougher for Pawar's panel to win. The deputy CM has entered the fray to boost the morale of his candidates, while attracting votes in his name," a close associate of Pawar told TOI. Pawar's Neelkantheshwar panel will take on two panels, including the NCP (SP)-backed Baliraja Sahakar Bachao panel and the Sahakar Bachao panel headed by Chandrarao Taware and Ranjan Taware — considered Pawar political rivals.
