Pune: Deputy chief minister
Ajit Pawar
has returned to the politically charged world of sugar cooperatives election after almost 40 years, filing his own nomination for the Malegaon mills.
He will be one among the 90 candidates in the fray for 21 seats to the Malegaon sugar mill board, which has been under the control of the deputy CM himself for the last few decades.
The Malegaon sugar mill is located in the stronghold of Pawars in Baramati and the win in the election is considered prestigious and essential for the family to continue its dominance in the sugar cooperative sector, while also sending a strong message to opponents.
Meanwhile, this is for the first time that election to the particular sugar mill is being held after the split in the Pawar family and the NCP.
The deadline for withdrawal of the nominations ended at 3pm on Thursday, after which 90 candidates, including Ajit Pawar, remained in the fray.
Speaking to TOI, election officer Yashwant Mane said, "Members of the Malegaon sugar mill belong to 37 villages of Baramati and there are around 20,000 voters.
Voting will be held on June 22 to elect a body of 21 board members." The counting of votes is on June 24 and the results will be declared later in the day, according to election officials.
Ajit Pawar contested his first election in the cooperative sector in 1984 for the Chhatrapati sugar mill, before he was introduced to mainstream politics by uncle Sharad Pawar. However, after contesting the Lok Sabha election in 1991 from the Baramati seat and kicking off his political career, Pawar never went back to contest sugar mill elections.
He has handled various important portfolios in various govts and held the position of deputy CM for a record six times.
He is influential in the sugar cooperative sector and ensures his panel remains on the board of directors every time.
However, this time, after a long gap of over 40 years, Pawar has decided to contest the sugar cooperative poll himself. According to his close associates, he made the deliberate choice to maintain his dominance in the sugar mill circuit.
"Over the last five years, opposition was accusing the Pawar-backed elected body of mismanagement and corruption. That apart, there is an NCP (SP) faction which will also be contesting the election — making it tougher for Pawar's panel to win. The deputy CM has entered the fray to boost the morale of his candidates, while attracting votes in his name," a close associate of Pawar told TOI.
Pawar's Neelkantheshwar panel will take on two panels, including the NCP (SP)-backed Baliraja Sahakar Bachao panel and the Sahakar Bachao panel headed by Chandrarao Taware and Ranjan Taware — considered Pawar political rivals.

Awareness drive for railway development in southern Odisha districts
1 2 3 Berhampur: Several social organisations under the banner of Milita Kriya Anusthan Committee, which spearheaded an agitation demanding development in the railway sector in southern Odisha, launched an awareness drive in Ganjam and Kandhamal districts by holding meetings in different towns on Friday. A bus, designated as Vikash Rath, carrying around 40 members of the committee, was flagged off from the railway station here. The committee members held meetings in Hinjili, Aska and Bhanjanagar on Friday and were scheduled to hold a meeting at Phulbani in Kandhamal on Saturday. "Besides some other demands, we urged the govt for the immediate construction of the railway line from Berhampur to Sambalpur (Rairkhol) via Bhanjanagar and Phulbani," said Bala Krushna Panda, a retired IAS officer and president of the committee. "If the railway line is constructed, it will bring Kandhamal under the railway network for the first time," he said. "Kandhamal, the tribal-dominated district, is yet to be under the railway map, even after 78 years of Independence. People of Kandhamal and Bhanjanagar, which is about 80km from here, depend on the Berhampur railway station for their train travel," he said. Traffic congestion, infra issues on Pune's Nagar Road prompt MLA to demand action from PMC, police
Pune: Residents of Nagar Road have cited rising distress due to unabated traffic congestion, poor road conditions, inadequate infrastructure, and unsafe pedestrian pathways. To address these issues urgently, Wadgaonsheri constituency MLA Bapu Pathare has submitted a memorandum to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), traffic police department and other administrators for urgent action. Recently, a signal-free plan was implemented in areas including Yerawada, Shastrinagar, Kalyaninagar, Ramwadi, Vimannagar, Tata Garden, Kharadi Bypass, Janak Baba Dargah, Yuvan IT Park, and Kharadi Check Post. Although the speed and flow of traffic has increased in the aftermath, many safety measures are still pending. Against this backdrop, the MLA proposed several measures in his missive. Some of the key measures suggested to the authorities include repositioning the disrupted divider after BRTS corridor removal in the area to the centre of the stretch. Further, citizens are demanding installation of zebra crossings, footpaths, pedestrian signals and reflective boards at the start of medians, besides directional and road guide signboards to major areas. Another demand is smart signal systems for traffic control. Additionally, in another memorandum, Pathare has also highlighted the extremely poor condition of the underpasses in Vimannagar and Chandannagar. He has demanded their urgent repair to make them safe for public use. According to him, these underpasses lack adequate lighting and cleanliness, making them feel unsafe for women, students and elderly citizens who regularly use these amenities. Speaking about the overall demands, Pathare told TOI, "The traffic system in Wadgaonsheri constituency needs streamlining. It is essential to have not only smooth traffic flow but also safe transportation. I am confident that the administration will consider my demands." Karnataka demands its fund devolution share raised to 50%
Bengaluru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah on Friday presented before the 16th Finance Commission the demand of Karnataka to increase the state's share in the devolution of funds to 50% and increase the share of taxes collected to 60% for states. In his additional memorandum, Siddaramaiah also demanded Rs 1.1 lakh crore for strengthening Bengaluru's infrastructure. Speaking to the media after his hour-long meeting with the chairman and members of the commission, Siddaramaiah said the govt placed before the commission its primary demand of having a rational division in tax devolution and tax sharing. "Karnataka contributes, as of the 2024-25 fiscal, as much as Rs 4.5 lakh crore annually. But what comes back to the state is 15 paise on every 1 rupee of tax collected. This is unfair. We have urged the commission to have a rational approach in tax devolution and tax sharing," the CM said. Siddaramaiah said Karnataka lost Rs 68,275 crore between the 14th and 15th Finance Commission allocations which went down from 4.7% to 3.6% in the last five years. The state also lost another Rs 8,084 crore via cess and surcharge. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "As a result, we have asked the commission to increase the state's share in devolution and also in tax collection, apart from including non-tax revenue in the devolution share," he said. Karnataka demanded that the cess and surcharges - which are not shared with states – be capped at 5% of the taxes. "And if it crosses 5%, then the union govt must share it with the states," he said. In Karnataka's memorandum, Siddaramaiah asked for a change in the formula of the income-distance criterion by 20% and to reallocate the same towards a state's economic contribution, so that high-performing states are not penalised but encouraged. The CM also asked the commission to reconsider the flawed design of revenue deficit grants and the unpredictable nature of state-specific grants. "While Kerala was provided Rs 38,000 crore over the last five years to cover its revenue deficit budget, Karnataka, despite having a deficit revenue budget over the last two years, has not been given a single rupee," he claimed. Meanwhile, reiterating the demand for grants for Bengaluru and other critical projects under discretionary special grants, Siddaramaiah has sought Rs 1.1 lakh crore investment to strengthen the city's infrastructure. He has said the city plays a major role in Karnataka's economy. Siddaramaiah also urged the commission to consider the need for additional funds for the state, specifically for Malnad, Kalyana Karnataka, and coastal Karnataka, which face natural disasters every year.
