
44 structures in airport funnel razed
Soon after the crash, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), along with the city airport authority conducted a survey of structures around the airport.
The survey identified 44 structures on different houses that could pose a risk to planes. AMC has since removed additional rooms, parapet walls, water tanks, and rooftop structures from 26 of these houses.
Having a clear airport funnel zone, a designated corridor that aircraft use for takeoff and landing, is a critical component in air safety.
Aviation authority notifications insist that airport funnels and their imaginary gradient should not be 'punctured' by structures or trees. An official from the AMC, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, "The height of constructions around the airport is determined based on the funnel area for plane takeoff and landing.
Most constructions near the airport's funnel area are legal, with plans approved by obtaining a No Objection Certificate from the Airport Authority of India.
Representatives from the corporation and the airport management company conducted a survey of the funnel area, finding no obstructive structures in the landing funnel. However, in the take-off funnel area, 44 obstructive structures were identified on various houses in Meghani Nagar and Kubernagar, and demolitions have been carried out. So far, water tanks, room tops, and parapet walls have been removed from 26 houses."

Another AMC official, also not wanting to be named, added, "There are constructions in Meghaninagar and Kubernagar that have been around for years, some of which are illegal. These include additional rooms and water tanks built on rooftops. We are taking steps to remove such obstructive structures. On June 12, the Air India flight crashed seconds after takeoff. Structures within a kilometre of the crash site have been removed.
The corporation and airport management company conduct regular surveys to monitor such issues."

Ahmedabad: A civic contradiction has taken flight in Ahmedabad. While the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) banned public bird feeding a decade ago to control hygiene and health issues, the city has quietly built over 100 bird-feeding platforms since. These concrete and metal structures — all funded by elected representatives and all executed by administrative officials — are now hotspots for pigeon gatherings, and public complaints. Senior AMC sources also added that most birdfeeder constructions were taken up without formal approvals, and there was no legal clarity on their permissibility under the existing ban. "We sanction if there's a demand," said one councillor. "If the executive wing believes it violates bylaws, they shouldn't approve it." The present municipal commissioner M Thennarasan, in July 2024, had directed officials to identify nuisance spots linked to bird feeding across Ahmedabad. Deputy municipal commissioners were assigned the task of mapping and planning closures of these areas. But insiders say no action has followed since. Ahmedabad is not the only city where bird feeding is banned. The Maharashtra govt directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to stop bird feeing in Mumbai early this month. A minister cited several studies linking pigeon droppings and diseases like asthma, lung infections, and other respiratory illnesses for the reason behind the ban.

Dog registration fee in A'bad increased to 1,000, to double from Oct 1
Ahmedabad: The cattle nuisance control department (CNCD) of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Thursday extended the deadline for pet dog registration until Dec 31, and increased the registration fee to Rs 1,000 for the period between Aug 1 and Sep 30. From Oct 1 to Dec 31, the fee will be doubled to Rs 2,000. It may be recalled that from Jan 1 to May 31, the fee was set at Rs 200, which was increased to Rs 500 for the June 1 to July 31 period. The CNCD had begun the pet registration process on Jan 1. It was estimated that there are around 50,000 pet dogs in the city. By July 31, 18,236 pet dogs were registered by 16,039 owners in the city. MLA advises farmers to use irrigation water judiciously
Khanapur: Irrigation water was released for the Kharif crop at Sadar Mat Aya Katta in Khanapur mandal of Nirmal district on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, MLA Bojju Patel said that the Sadar Mat Canal was cleared of trees and garbage accumulated at a cost of Rs 39 lakhs without any disruption in water supply. He said that farmers of Sadar Mat Aya Katta should use irrigation water sparingly. He advised farmers to complete their field work and sow the seeds. He said that if the seeds are sown early, it will sprout early, but if it is sown late, the crop will also be lost. He said that if water is released from the Sadar Mat barrage, which has been completed at Ponkal, it will come directly to Sadar Mat Katta.
