Two-year deal gives Cristiano Ronaldo a chance to reach 1,000 career goals

Rhyl Journal8 hours ago

Here, the PA news agency looks at the Portugal international and former Real Madrid and Manchester United star's record of 938 goals to date for club and country.
– Ronaldo has the most goals in men's international football with 138. He passed Iran's Ali Daei's previous record of 108 in June 2021.
– His 221 caps are also a record number, going past Bader Al Mutawa's 196 for Kuwait in March 2023.
– Ronaldo, Lionel Messi (112) and Daei are the only men with a century of international goals, while Ronaldo alone has reached 200 caps.
– Minnows Luxembourg are his favourite opponent, with 11 goals.
– Ronaldo is Real Madrid's record goalscorer with 450, almost 100 clear of second-placed Karim Benzema (354).
– He scored those goals in just 438 appearances, giving him a ratio better than a goal per game and an average of exactly 50 in each of his nine seasons. He scored 61 in all competitions in 2014-15 and just one fewer in 2011-12.
– Another 145 goals came across his two spells with Manchester United, 118 in his first after joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 and 27 after returning in 2021.
– Ronaldo's most prolific United season came in 2007-08, winning the Premier League Golden Boot with 31 goals and scoring 42 in all competitions.
– He holds the records for most goals and appearances in the UEFA Champions League, 141 goals in 187 games. He, Messi and Robert Lewandowski are the only players with 100-plus goals in the competition.
– Ronaldo is the only player to score in three Champions League finals, and also holds records of 17 goals in a season (2013-14) and scoring in 11 successive appearances.
– He netted five goals in all competitions for his first club Sporting Lisbon and 101 in three seasons with Juventus. His last goal of last season was his 800th in club football and his first of the new campaign will be his 100th for Al Nassr.
– Ronaldo has won a record five UEFA Champions League titles, four with Real after winning his first with United in 2008.
– He has won the Ballon d'Or, awarded to the world's best player, five times – a total exceeded only by Argentina star Messi's eight. Ronaldo was awarded a special award for outstanding career achievement at the 2021 FIFA Best Awards.
– His 26 major honours also include seven domestic league titles, three in England with United and two each in Spain and Italy. With Portugal, he won Euro 2016 as well as two Nations League titles.
– Ronaldo has won the European Golden Shoe on four occasions and was top scorer at Euro 2020. The 40-year-old's 938 career goals have come in 1,281 senior appearances, with Portugal age-group and Olympic games excluded.

Newcastle make Marcus Rashford transfer decision as £140m triple swoop eyed

Marcus Rashford has been put up for sale by Manchester United, having been loaned out for the second half of last season after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim Newcastle have no plans to sign Marcus Rashford, instead prioritising a former Manchester United team-mate of his. Rashford, 27, is searching for a new club as his time at Old Trafford appears to be up. The England international was sent on loan to Aston Villa in January, with United manager Ruben Amorim making it clear that he was no longer part of his plans. Rashford scored four goals and registered five assists in 17 appearances for Villa, who weren't convinced him enough to trigger their £40million option to buy him permanently. ‌ That's still the amount which United are holding out for, with Rashford expected to return for pre-season training next month if no buyer is found. The forward's preference is to join Barcelona, even sending a come-get-me-plea last week. ‌ His brother and agent, Dwaine Maynard, was previously spotted meeting Barca sporting director Deco in Catalunya. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has also described Rashford as a 'fantastic player'. But the La Liga champions are unlikely to cough up United's asking price, as they're currently prioritising the £50m signing of Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao. In light of Barcelona's stance, Newcastle emerged as alternative destination - although that, too, now looks like a dead end for the 27-year-old. The Sun report that Rashford isn't on Newcastle's list of targets. Magpies boss Eddie Howe wants to bolster his attack this summer, as they prepare to return to the Champions League. But Howe wants to sign ex-United winger Anthony Elanga, now of Nottingham Forest, as well as Brighton striker Joao Pedro. Their arrivals would part of a triple transfer swoop including Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. Bournemouth wide man Antoine Semenyo and Villa's Jacob Ramsey are also on the Magpies' radar unlike Rashford. The United outcast will be hoping that Barca can find a way of signing him amid their precarious financial position. Should Newcastle have targeted Marcus Rashford? Have your say in the comments section. ‌ While on holiday in Marbella, Rashford was asked by Spanish YouTube channel XBuyer whether he wants to play alongside Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal. "Yeah, sure. Everybody in the world wants to play with the best," he replied. "So hopefully, we'll see." Rashford also enjoys life in Spain, adding: "Spain is nice, it's not too far from home. If I'm training over a long period, my family can come for a few days, it's a nice location and good weather." And here is the proof as he is spotted training with John Lundstram and Tom Lawrence at the plush high performance multi-sports hub Campus in Quinta Do lago in the Algarve. Rangers returned to pre-season on Monday, but the centre-back has been giving a little more time off before teaming up with the squad after his season finished later. The Ibrox club are set to play their first pre-season friendly against Club Brugge next Sunday (July 6) before a week's training down at St George's Park - the home of the England international team. They then have that massive game against Panathinaikos at Ibrox on July 22 followed by the return leg in Greece on July 30. Rangers added full-back Max Aarons to the squad this week as he became Martin's first summer signing and he was immediately put through his paces. Martin wants to assess every member of his squad before making a decision on whether they have a future at the club. That includes defender Ben Davies who spent last season on loan at Birmingham City and made 35 appearances for the League One champions. Kieran Dowell, who was also at Birmingham, is also being given a chance to impress. Trent Alexander-Arnold speaks out about Real Madrid as he makes Liverpool point

Trent Alexander-Arnold has not been at Real Madrid for long, but the England international's new team-mates have already made an impression following his move from Liverpool Trent Alexander-Arnold has admitted that while he knew his Real Madrid team-mates were going to be world-class, he didn't expect them to be so friendly. The England international moved to Los Blancos after the La Liga giants agreed to pay Liverpool £10million to sign him a month ahead of schedule. He was initially going to move to the Spanish capital as a free agent, but Real's desire to include Alexander-Arnold in their Club World Cup squad prompted them to pay a fee to sign him earlier. In their final group match in the USA, Xabi Alonso deployed the right-back for the full 90 minutes as they beat RB Salzburg 3-0. ‌ It was the latest sign that the defender is further settling into life at the 15-time European champions. Even Alexander-Arnold, who knew the quality they'd possess having faced them five times for his boyhood club, is surprised by the way his new team-mates have taken to him. ‌ Speaking to reporters after Real overcame the Austrian side, Alexander-Arnold said: "Every player is impressing me. From when I played against Real Madrid, [I knew] all the players are world class. "But just the way the lads are; when you come in, you expect it to be very intimidating, you don't know what to expect. But it was very warm, very welcoming, they made me feel at home straight away, which was amazing. "It allows me to play as well as I can and today coming into the game, I was confident to go and perform. The settlement period now is done. "It's about kicking on and being the best player that I can be and giving the best for the team and helping the team win as many games as possible starting with this competition.' Alexander-Arnold won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Club World Cup (in its previous format) and two League Cups during his time at Liverpool. Throughout his time at Anfield, he contributed 67 assists, more than any other defender in Premier League history. ‌ When he arrived at his new club, he endeared himself to his colleagues and supporters by speaking in Spanish during his unveiling. While that has gone some way to helping him make a good impression, Alexander-Arnold admits he is still struggling to get to grips with the language. He added: "Of course speaking and being a part of the conversation is harder. You work hard to try and understand what people are saying and be a part of it. ‌ "But the manager speaks to me a lot individually to make sure I understand everything that gets said. The meetings are in Spanish so he goes out his way and the staff go out the way to make sure I understand the game plan. So there's differences but it's just football.' Real progressed into the last 16 of the competition as group winners. They started the campaign with a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, before overcoming Mexican team Pachuca and then Salzburg. They face Juventus, who were demolished 5-2 by Manchester City in their final group match, in the next round on July 1.
