Dan O'Reilly relishing chance to lead by example at Partick Thistle
It leaves 30-year-old O'Reilly as one of the seasoned veterans in the dressing room, and the centre-half is aware that there is more responsibility resting on his shoulders this term. Rather than shying away from it, though, it is a role the Irishman is relishing.
"Sometimes I forget I'm one of the older boys now,' he said. 'There's no secret, we've lost Brian, Banzo and Mitch. That's a lot of experience and it's important other players step up.
"We have to drive the standards. There's going to be a blend of youth and experience in the team. It's important the young boys have players around them that set the standards.
"We definitely need to step up and I do see myself as one of those experienced heads. I try and lead by example on and off the pitch and hopefully that seeps into the younger guys.
"There's going to be times when we're under pressure because of results and the likes of myself and Lee [Ashcroft] have to show the way."
Ashcroft, in particular, will be expected to lead by example. The defender was yesterday named as the Jags' new skipper following Graham's move to Falkirk, while Bannigan - who had been at the club for 14 years - upped sticks and signed for Ayr United.

"Lee is a great choice,' O'Reilly said. 'I think he is a model professional and a leader.
"I've loved playing with him and you know what you're going to get from him all of the time. He drives standards and he's a great captain to have at the club.
"Obviously Brian was captain before and it is an important responsibility. Lee will take that on board.
"We have a nice balance playing together. We communicate well and I think we're similar in some ways but different in others.
"In terms of the spine of the team, I think we work well together. You need to always fight for shirt."
Bannigan's exit has understandably felt a little surreal for everyone connected to the club. A modern-day Thistle legend who was seen as part of the furniture at Firhill, there is an entire generation of Jags supporters who have never seen a Thistle team without the midfielder on the books.
O'Reilly admits that turning up to training - Thistle's players returned for pre-season last week - has been a little strange without Bannigan's presence.
"It's tough, especially when someone has been there for such a long time,' he explained. "He knows no different than Thistle. So it's probably as strange for us as it is for him.
"That's football though. You just have to get on with it. He was great for us last year, but him leaving presents opportunities to other players here.
"I'm excited to see other people stepping up and I've already seen people taking on other roles in the squad."
O'Reilly may well find himself taking on a new role this term. Thistle are in need of a vice-captain, after all, and as an experienced and reliable head, it would come as little surprise if the centre-back was given the nod.
"Maybe! We'll see what happens,' O'Reilly grinned when the proposition was put to him. 'If it did happen, I'd be delighted. But I do try and lead all the time anyway.
"It would mean a lot to get the armband on. There might be times when Lee is unavailable through injury or suspension and if the chance comes, I would love it."

Paul Merson makes Man Utd vs Arsenal predication in 'must-win' for Gunners
Paul Merson feels the trip to Manchester United on Sunday is absolutely critical for Arsenal and their Premier League title hopes this season. The new campaign gets going on Friday night as the defending champions Liverpool host Bournemouth, with the most eye-catching game of the first weekend coming on Sunday. The Red Devils host the Gunners at Old Trafford with Ruben Amorim hoping to prove that his team are much improved from last season's disaster, while Mikel Arteta wants to take the first step on a title challenge. Arsenal have finished second in each of the last three seasons and the pressure is starting to mount on the Spaniard to deliver a significant piece of silverware in the near future. Merson feels the Gunners have to get their campaign off with a win, especially with very difficult games to follow, which could see them lose ground early in the title race. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The former England star told SportsKeeda: 'This is a must-win game for Arsenal, it's as simple as that! If you have a look at their fixtures after this weekend, it goes like – Leeds United at home, Liverpool away, Forest and Man City at home before a trip to Newcastle. 'If they don't beat Manchester United on Sunday, I don't expect them to beat Liverpool and City during this run! So all of a sudden, they could be seven or nine points behind in the title race. 'Viktor Gyokeres scored a brilliant header in pre-season. When Arsenal are under pressure in certain games, he will become a nuisance to opponents by running the channels and working the defenders. He's a real presence in front of goal and you can count on him to cause problems to opponents. 'I think Arsenal can win the league, if they can keep all their main players fit. I'd be shocked if Gyokeres, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard all play 35 games and arsenal still don't win the Premier League. They are massive favourites if that happens.' It is a big claim to put Arsenal as 'massive favourites' ahead of Liverpool and Manchester City if they just keep their players fit, but Merson is backing the club where he became an icon. He is also backing them to pick up the all important win on Sunday, tipped the Gunners to head back to north London with a 2-1 victory. Manchester United legends Roy Keane and Gary Neville also discussed the fixture on the Stick to Football podcast, with the Irishman agreeing with Merson's prediction of 2-1 to Arsenal. Neville, though, has backed his former club for a dream start to the season. 'United are winning that,' said Neville. 'I'm going United, 2-1. I just think it's a really bad game for Arsenal to get first up. I think it's a challenging game for Arsenal first up.' More Trending Alan Shearer has gone for the other option, tipping a draw at Old Trafford this weekend. The Premier League legend told Metro: 'It's wonderful for us to sit down on Sunday and watch two giants go head to head so early in the season. Tough one to call but I'll go for a draw. 'There's always a surprise result on the opening weekend. I don't know what a surprise result would be in this game. It's so tough to call with so many interesting moving parts. Gyokores on one side, Sesko on the other. 'Amorim and Gyokores know each other really well. Zubimendi may free up Declan Rice more, Man United have done really well in forward positions. It's a tough one to call so early in the season. There'll be needle at Old Trafford.' Cardiff City rivals reveal rumours of Bluebirds trying to sign 'big players'
Cardiff City rivals reveal rumours of Bluebirds trying to sign 'big players' A rival boss has let slip on some information he has on Cardiff's transfer strategy Cardiff City head coach Brian Barry-Murphy (left) and assistant manager Lee Riley (Image: PA Wire) Cardiff City are looking to sign "some big players" in the transfer market, according to this weekend's opponents Rotherham United. There are corners of the City supporter base who are getting a little twitchy, given the Bluebirds have signed just one player so far in this window, goalkeeper Nathan Trott on loan. Head coach Brian Barry-Murphy has said he understands the frustration some fans might be feeling, given they are pretty in the dark over why some deals are taking so long to get over the line, but he is confident the deals will get done. And Dale Tonge, assistant manager at the Millers, has said he has heard "rumblings" that the Bluebirds are after some stellar players in the market this summer. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community. Ahead of this weekend's trip to the Welsh capital, the Rotherham assistant said of Cardiff: "Listen, you'd expect them to be at the top end of the table. "They are a big club, especially at this level. "That's how they are trying to recruit. You hear it in the background, the rumblings, they've got some big players that they are potentially looking to sign. Article continues below "If that is the case, we will cross that bridge when we get to it." The statement has added credence when Tonge followed that up by saying he is personally close to Barry-Murphy. "They have a clear way of playing, and I know Brian personally from his Rochdale days and then his time at Man City," Tonge added. "He's got a clear way of playing and they have an identity as a possession based team. "They have a lot of threats going forward and some really technical players at the top end of the pitch - which is something we'll have to be aware of. "They are still a new team as well so there are opportunities there that hopefully we can cause them problems with." Cardiff are likely looking to add a left-back and centre-back, while a winger might well be on the wish list, too. Barry-Murphy has denied suggestions that he is not being backed in the transfer market, instead insisting he is being fussy in terms of ensuring every penny is spent wisely and on players who fit the exact profile of target he is after. The Irishman said on Thursday that the perceived lack of experience in his squad does not worry him and that will not inform his transfer strategy. He said: "It doesn't worry me. I think experience can manifest itself in a lot of different ways. "And the more that our players are exposed to these challenges, the more they grow. "I'm not trying to play it on expectations, but I think that there has to be an understanding that these guys will go through different ups and downs during the season. Article continues below "But I'm very pleased with the squad. Players that we add to the squad would be to bring in particular qualities that we feel are important, but the age of those players will not be part of the key decision-making process."
