Kate Middleton and Prince William's Last 5 Years 'Have Been a Nightmare for Them'

Yahoo20-03-2025

When people think about five years ago in the royal family, they likely think of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who stepped away from life as working royals in 2020 and relocated from the U.K. to the U.S.
It is certainly not a competition (just so we're clear), but Prince William and Kate Middleton, too, have endured so much in that same timeframe: the deaths of both Prince Philip in 2021 and Queen Elizabeth in 2022; their elevated role as Prince and Princess of Wales following the Queen's passing; and then 2024, which saw both Kate and King Charles diagnosed with cancer. It was a year William referred to as 'brutal' last November, one that he called the hardest of his life.
Speaking to People for the magazine's cover story released March 19, royal historian Amanda Foreman said a year like 2024 'either crushes a marriage, or it brings them together.'
In the Prince and Princess of Wales' case, it seems to have brought them closer together, both proverbially and even literally, as they've never been so open with public displays of affection as they have been as of late.
'There is a sense of protectiveness and partnership,' Foreman said. 'The last five years have been a nightmare for them in every possible way—the past year even more so.'
Of last year, Jason Knauf, William and Kate's former private secretary, told 60 Minutes Australia last month, 'If you're Prince William, you find out that both your wife and your father have cancer' contributed to it being the 'lowest' Knauf has ever seen the future king.
In January, Kate announced that she is in remission from cancer, and is making her gradual return to annual royal events, including this month's Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey and the Irish Guards' St. Patrick's Day parade. While neither Kate nor William will ever likely be the person they were before 2024—and that's okay—normalcy seems to be returning for the couple as they get back to their royal routine while also being mindful of all they've learned from the past year. (March 22 marks one year since Kate made a video announcement telling the world that she had been diagnosed with cancer following major abdominal surgery in January.)
William and Kate's return in full is 'just in time, frankly,' Foreman told People. 'If there was ever a time when the country required stability, this is it.'
'The international stage is so unstable, it is rather extraordinary to see how both have risen to the occasion,' she added.

Fans React to Judge Dismissing Justin Baldoni's $400 Million Lawsuit Against Blake Lively

Justin Baldoni's $400 million lawsuit against Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds has been tossed out by a judge — and fans aren't holding back their opinions. On Monday, June 9, Judge Lewis J. Liman dismissed the defamation and extortion countersuit filed by Baldoni, 41, and his production company, Wayfarer Studios, against Lively, 37, her husband Ryan Reynolds, 48, and her publicist, Leslie Sloane. The judge also threw out a separate $250 million claim against The New York Times. The court of public opinion is divided as fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their thoughts on this new ruling. Some people were happy for the Gossip Girl alum and felt she was finally vindicated. 'If Baldoni's case had credibility, the judge wouldn't have tossed it out,' one fan wrote. 'That's a big win for blake,' a second commented. Another declared, 'Seemed pretty thin from the beginning. Glad it was thrown out.' However, many came to the Jane the Virgin actor's defense. 'It doesn't matter…the world sees blake and Ryan for who they are and they are not supported,' one person wrote. 'This is a technicality….Justin will still have support of the people when this is over. #staystrongjustin.' 'Who says money can't buy you everything,' a second commented. 'Justin Baldoni's countersuit being dismissed DOES NOT mean Blake Lively is telling the truth,' a third fan noted. 'It just shows sexual assault claims—YET TO BE PROVEN—are generally protected.' In his filing, obtained by People, Judge Liman explained, 'The Wayfarer Parties have not alleged that Lively is responsible for any statements other than the statements in her CRD complaint, which are privileged.' 'The Wayfarer Parties have alleged that Reynolds and Sloane made additional statements accusing Baldoni of sexual misconduct and that the 'Times' made additional statements accusing the Wayfarer Parties of engaging in a smear campaign,' he continued. 'But the Wayfarer Parties have not alleged that Reynolds, Sloane or the Times would have seriously doubted these statements were true based on the information available to them, as is required for them to be liable for defamation under applicable law.' According to People, Lively's legal team said that the ruling was a 'total victory and a complete vindication' for the actress. While Baldoni's lawyers have yet to make a public statement, they have until Monday, June 23, to file an amendment. The legal drama between the two stars began in December 2024, when Lively filed a lawsuit alleging that Baldoni sexually harassed her on the set of their film It Ends With Us. Baldoni, who also directed the film, denied the allegations and filed a $400 million countersuit in January 2025.

King Charles Forced To Skip This Major Tradition Amid Drastic Changes in the Royal Family

King Charles III will be breaking royal tradition at this year's Trooping the Colour. According to The Times of London, King Charles will not ride on horseback at this year's Trooping the Colour parade, as has been tradition for reigning monarchs. Instead, Charles will ride in a carriage alongside Queen Camilla for the procession from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade and back on Saturday, June 14. More from SheKnows All the Best Photos of the Royal Family From the Past 20 Years Per The Times, Charles is unlikely to ever ride in the parade again. The outlet did not give an official reason as to why Charles will skip the ride, but the King is currently receiving weekly treatment for cancer. He rode in a carriage last year shortly after revealing his cancer diagnosis. Charles rode as sovereign in 2023, marking the first time the monarch had ridden in the parade since Queen Elizabeth in 1986. Charles' mother rode Burmese, her trusty mare, until she was retired, after which the Queen travelled in a carriage from 1987 until her final appearance in 2022. After briefly reviving the tradition, Charles will once again retire it and perhaps for good. This latest shift away from tradition comes amid several changes happening behind the scenes, allegedly stemming from Prince William's new vision for the monarchy. In May, Kate Mansey, a royal editor for the Times, claimed William is planning for 'quite a radical departure, really, from what The King does, or what the late Queen did.' Mansey claimed that William is less interested in the ribbon-cutting and public appearances we're used to seeing the Royals do and wants the family to be more associated with real charitable projects. Mansey claimed that William 'wants to come away and think, 'I've made a difference there, there's money that's gone into that community centre or there's something that's happened because I went there,' rather than just showing up and shaking some hands.' The Trooping the Colour parade may be an early sign that old traditions are changing in the Royal Family. Kate ‘in Disgust' of Harry Amid Reports Their Relationship Has ‘Dramatically Deteriorated' Under the ‘Influence' of Meghan

It's hard to keep track of all the feuds in the British Royal family at this point. King Charles is feuding with Prince Harry. So is Prince William. And it seems Prince William is also feuding with Prince Andrew. Everyone seems to be taking sides. And recently, there were reports that Kate Middleton was trying to fix her husband's relationship with her brother, Prince Harry, with whom she's always been close. Reportedly, that's not true anymore, if it ever was. Instead, it seems like she's just supporting her husband and his decisions regarding his brother. An unnamed source told Us Weekly that the Prince and Princess of Wales 'just don't understand why Harry doesn't stay quiet.' But there's more. According to Kinsey Schofield, host of the 'To Di For Daily' podcast, William is also upset about how Kate has been treated. More from StyleCaster Princess Alexandra Subtly Took a Side in Charles & Harry's Feud Amid Reports There's 'No Turning Back' in Their Relationship Prince Edward Could Predict 'Desperately Lonely' Harry's Future Amid Reports Charles' Funeral May Be the Last Time He Ever Sees His Family Again Related: Did William really cheat on Kate? 'Catherine has been nothing but supportive of her husband – and that's exactly why Prince William is so deeply hurt,' Schofield explained. 'His pain doesn't come from personal insults or headlines. It comes from his instinct to protect the woman he loves… But what cuts the deepest is Harry's treatment of Catherine. She's always loved him, always treated him like a little brother. That's the betrayal William won't forget… But Harry never seems to think about the consequences.' British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard told Fox New Digital that Middleton had been 'saddened' by the rift between the brothers. But she won't intervene. 'Catherine and Harry shared a fun humor and were often seen giggling together at events,' Chard explained. 'Sadly and upsettingly, Princess Catherine was dragged into the public negative narrative which was a real smack round the face for the kind sister-in-law who tried hard to be the peacemaker between the brothers.' Recent reports had indicated that, even though Middleton was upset at Harry's recent interview, she was trying to mediate between the brothers. 'Kate's deeply upset with Harry, but she's also frustrated that William and the rest of the family have allowed things to deteriorate this badly,' the insider said, adding that, 'It's heartbreaking for her to watch the family so publicly divided.' also reported that 'William is furious that Harry's speaking out again and doing interviews – he's convinced this isn't the end of it.' And Prince William has, therefore, given instructions to the rest of the family not to communicate with Harry. 'He's made it clear to the rest of the family that they should keep their distance from the Sussexes, because anything shared could be turned against them,' the report also said. According to Royal expert Hilary Fordwich, all of this only adds to the strained relationship between Middleton and Prince Harry, who used to be close. 'Princess Catherine and Prince Harry's relationship has dramatically deteriorated over recent years,' Fordwich claimed. 'There is a huge sense of betrayal and broader frustration, as well as a massive cultural clash. How Harry has changed under the influence of Meghan Markle has been baffling both to the royal family and beyond.' 'Catherine, in particular, is deeply wounded by Harry's media disclosures airing family grievances and betraying any family loyalty while dismissing royal values. Catherine was once the peacemaker between the feuding brothers. She often encouraged William to reconcile,' she also said, adding, 'However, after years of futile efforts, she has now thrown her hands up in disgust, stepping back from any role of attempting to mediate a reconciliation since the rift between the brothers kept widening.' The drama continues, and it doesn't seem like it'll get better anytime soon.
