MLB investigating after Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr., Braves assistant coach get into it after relaying signs

Yahoo20-07-2025
Major League Baseball is investigating an incident between New York Yankees star Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Atlanta Braves assistant coach Eddie Pérez on Saturday night, according to The Athletic.
Chisholm and Pérez were spotted getting into it during the Yankees' 12-9 win over the Braves on Saturday night in Atlanta after Chisholm was spotted relaying signs from second base. Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe hit a sacrifice fly deep into the outfield after Chisholm relayed that a fastball was coming in the sixth inning.
Chisholm was seen telling Pérez to 'cry about it,' before brushing him off on the base.
Pérez was spotted pointing to his head in the dugout, which some have taken to mean he was threatening to have Chisholm hit by a pitch later in the game.
'I hope it didn't [have to do with throwing at his head], because obviously there's no place for that,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday morning at Truist Park, via The Athletic. 'That's certainly something that would not be OK. I hope he didn't mean anything like that by it, because that would deserve some looking into.'
Chisholm declined to comment. It's unclear what punishment the league will hand down from its investigation, if any.
While it clearly upset the Braves, relaying signs the way that Chisholm did is not against MLB rules. That's perfectly legal, so long as it's done without the use of electronic communications. Saturday's incident was the second time this month that the Yankees have been caught relaying signs, something that Boone doesn't seem to mind.
'Look, every team now, from the start of the year to the end, you're trying to find little advantages out there,' Boone said. 'You're trying to find little ways to help you win a ballgame. So that's all within the parameters of the rules.
'Every team we play against is no different, and we're not, either. You're constantly trying to find advantages where you can and where they present themselves in a certain game, and that's all good.'
After their win on Saturday night, the Yankees picked up a 4-2 win over the Braves on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the three-game series. Chisholm had two hits and an RBI on Sunday, too. The Yankees now sit at 55-44 on the season, while the Braves dropped to 43-54.

Luis Gil lined up to make season debut Sunday for Yankees after latest Triple-A rehab outing

NEW YORK (AP) — Luis Gil is expected to make his season debut for the New York Yankees on Sunday at Miami after missing four months with a lat strain. The reigning AL Rookie of the Year struck out seven over 4 1/3 innings Tuesday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Gil threw 50 of 75 pitches for strikes, allowing one run and three hits in his fourth minor league rehabilitation start. Injured in spring training, the right-hander is lined up to return this weekend against the Marlins after pitching 14 1/3 innings in the minors. 'I think that's the plan right now,' manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-5 on Tuesday night. Gil began facing hitters on June 21, when he threw 20 pitches of live batting practice at Yankee Stadium, and made his first rehab start July 13 for Double-A Somerset. 'I think for the most part, get through it hopefully successfully, and strike-throwing and carrying his stuff throughout the outing,' Boone said. 'You want to see those things, but we're also mindful of it that in a lot of ways it's spring training for him and building up. 'So there's definitely that next level of competitive juices and adrenaline that'll be flowing once he gets back up here.' Gil stopped a bullpen session on Feb. 28 because of tightness in his pitching shoulder. He went to New York for a second MRI that revealed a high-grade lat strain on March 3. He was shut down from throwing for at least six weeks after receiving the original diagnosis, and at the time the Yankees said he would not return until June at the earliest. On April 16, the Yankees said Gil's throwing program would be delayed for about 10 days. The 27-year-old Gil went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the AL East champions last year, striking out 171 and walking a major league-high 77 in 151 2/3 innings. Acquired from the Minnesota Twins in a 2018 trade, Gil made a successful return from Tommy John surgery and threw eight more innings in a pair of postseason starts as the Yankees reached the World Series for the first time since 2009.

Isbel and Pasquantino power Royals to 9-6 win over Braves after Acuña exits with injury

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kyle Isbel hit a pivotal three-run double and Vinnie Pasquantino homered as the Kansas City Royals beat Atlanta 9-6 on Tuesday night after Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. exited with tightness in his right Achilles tendon. Seth Lugo (8-5) won his first start since agreeing Monday to a $46 million, two-year contract for 2026 and '27. Pasquantino finished with three hits and two RBIs. Bobby Witt Jr. also drove in two runs for the Royals, and Jonathan India had a two-run double. Marcell Ozuna homered and knocked in three for Atlanta, and Austin Riley also went deep. But right-hander Erick Fedde (3-11) fell behind 4-0 after two innings in his Braves debut. Michael Harris II had three hits. Acuña left in the sixth inning after chasing down a ball in right field. Pasquantino hit a solo homer in the first, and Isbel gave Kansas City a 7-3 lead with his bases-clearing double in the sixth. Witt added a run-scoring single and Pasquantino an RBI double to make it 9-3. Lugo took a shutout into the sixth, but got only two more outs. He was charged with three runs and seven hits while striking out five and walking four. Carlos Estévez, the fifth Royals reliever, got three outs for his 28th save. Key moment With the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth, Hunter Harvey retired Jurickson Profar on a flyball to preserve a 4-3 lead for the Royals before they scored five times in the bottom half. Key stat The Royals have scored at least five runs in seven of their last 11 games, something they accomplished only 21 times prior to the All-Star break. Up next The Braves will send LHP Joey Wentz (2-2, 5.76 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday. The Royals hadn't announced a scheduled starter. ___ AP MLB: Avery Osen, The Associated Press
