Sandro Wagner turns down Hoffenheim as Ilzer talks of Pele's resurrection

Qatar Tribune09-05-2025

FrankfurtcTypeface:> Germany assistant coach Sandro Wagner has turned down the chance to coach Hoffenheim, sources close to the matter told dpa on Thursday. Wagner, who played for the Bundesliga club 2016-2017, recently announced he would leave the Germany role to pursue a head coaching career after the Nations League Final Four in June. Hoffenheim, who are still not safe from relegation with two games left of the campaign, are widely expected to part company with coach Christian Ilzer despite the Austrian only taking over in November. Lukas Kwasniok from second-tier promotion chasers Paderborn is now seen as favourite for the Hoffenheim job, German media have reported. Ilzer is still in the job for now and held a news conference on Thursday previewing Friday's trip to Wolfsburg. A Hoffenheim win would secure safety. 'I find it funny that you ask me about my future again, just like last week and two weeks ago,' he said. 'In the end I can only tell you that if you need sensational headlines and want to write sensational stories that are not true, you should write that Pelé has resurrected and we will sign him for next season. There is nothing more for me to say.' Hoffenheim insisted later that they have not made an offer of any kind to another coach. 'We are happy to repeat: We are united behind our coach Christian Ilzer. There was and is currently no discussion about a coach,' the club said. (dpa)

Ronaldo set to stay at Al Nassr with another World Cup looming

dpa Munich Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly ended speculation about his club future, saying he will continue to play at Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr as he also probably also sets his sights on next year's World Cup. 'Nothing is going to change. Playing at Al-Nassr? Yes,' he was quoted as saying early Monday by multiple reports after captaining Portugal to the Nations League title in Munich. Ronaldo, 40, joined Al-Nassr in 2023 after falling out with coach Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. His current contract is until June 30. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had recently suggested that Ronaldo could move to a side qualified for the upcoming Club World Cup. Ronaldo on Saturday confirmed talks but said he won't be at the tournament in the United States. On Sunday, Portugal beat Spain 5-3 on penalties to give Ronaldo and his team a third trophy, the others being at Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League. 'I have many titles but there is nothing better than winning with the national team,' the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said. Ronaldo scored the 2-2 equalizer in the 61st minute which eventually set up the shoot-out, but came off in the 88th with an apparant thigh problem. He had also scored the 2-1 winner in Wednesday's semi-final against Germany. The two goals brought his tally to 138, from 221 caps, which are both world records in the men's game. Coach Robert Martinez said that Ronaldo had played a 'decisive role' in winning the title, after some had expressed scepticism whether the veteran still had a lot to give. Martinez has also come under criticism, mainly from the Portuguese media, over not always glorious performances of the team. Ronaldo named the criticism 'unfair,' and Portugal did indeed impress in Germany with well-executed tactics that stopped the resurgent host team and than also the classy Spaniards around their teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. Ronaldo won the duel of the generations agianst the 17-year-old Yamal on the night but they may meet again at next year's World Cup, a title still eluding Ronaldo. Sunday's final showed that Ronaldo can still electrify the fans, and the hosting Americans, Canadians and Mexicans are expected to share the excitement in what would be his sixth World Cup. For Nuno Mendes, the Man of the Match on Sunday with a goal and assist as well as containing Yamal, there is no doubt about Ronaldo's value. 'He helps us a lot. He has a winning mentality. He is a role model. We are happy to have him,' Mendes said.

Mbappe stars as France beat Germany 2-0 for NL third place

dpa Stuttgart Captain Kylian Mbappé scored and set up the other as France beat hosts Germany 2-0 on Sunday in the Nations League match for third place. Man of the Match Mbappé netted a 50th goal in his 90th cap shortly before half-time, and then fed Michael Olise for the second in the 84th. Victory was sweet for Les Bleus after Thursday's 5-4 semi-final defeat against Spain, while Germany ended the home event with two losses, having fallen 2-1 against Portugal on Wednesday. Florian Wirtz hit the post, the hosts had a penalty call and a goal nullified upon review, but were also wasteful, especially early on. France finish on a high Much-changed France were a constant threat on the counter after the break, with Marcus Thuram hitting the outside post, and German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen keeping his side in the game on several occasions. 'We are happy to beat a team like Germany,' Mbappé told German broadcasters RTL. 'They had many opportunities but didn't score. We then scored and after the break it was more 50-50 and we had many chances.' Germany try to see the positives The first back-to-back defeats since November 2023 highlighted that Germany lack the squad depth of other top teams and, despite all progress in 2024, have a lot of work ahead to become a major threat again at big events. 'We showed in the first half that we wanted to show a reaction,' Germany captain Joshua Kimmich said. 'We should have been 3-0 up after six minutes. We conceded shortly before half-time and lost patience after the break. We made too many mistakes in possession.' Coach Julian Nagelsmann said: 'We must score against such top teams but the approach was good. In the second half we wanted to force things which leads to counter attacks. We showed that we can create against top teams despite missing several players.' Germany miss early lead in frantic start Both coaches had said they would use the match as a casting for World Cup qualifying in autumn, with France's Didier Deschamps making eight changes from the semi-final line-up, and Nagelsmann four. Germany started with purpose as Nick Woltemade and Karim Adeyemi were denied by goalkeeper Mike Maignan, Pascal Gross aimed wide, and Niclas Füllkrug had a goal-bound shot headed away by Lucas Digne. France finally settled in, and Cherki forced a first save from Ter Stegen, who then had to dive to his left to keep Loic Badé's header out on the ensuing corner kick. France lead after German penalty rescinded Germany thought they could take the lead after half an hour when referee Ivan Krueliak awarded a penalty after Adeyemi went down against Maignan. But the decision was rescinded after a long review and Adeyemi booked for diving instead. Wirtz hit the left post in the 36th, and Maignan denied Woltemade once more, but it was France who took the lead on the stroke of half-time. A long ball from Aurelien Tchouameni sailed over Kimmich to Mbappé, who beat the Germany captain and fired into the far right corner although Ter Stegen got his fingertips on the ball. Germany were punished for their wastefulness, and Mbappé almost struck again after the restart, hitting the side-netting. More German VAR agony before France seal it The ball was finally in the French net in the 53rd from substitute Deniz Undav, after Füllkrug had disposessed Rabiot. But Kru?liak ruled after a long look at the monitor that Füllkrug had fouled the defender. France were however now the more dangerous team, mainly on the counter, with chances including Thuram's shot against the post, Cherki aiming inches right, and Ter Stegan saving superbly against Mbappe's volley. The second finally came with six minutes left on yet another break, when unselfish Mbappé squared for substitute Olise to tap into the empty net.

Kane admits England lacked quality in Andorra win

PA Media/dpa Barcelona England captain Harry Kane admits Thomas Tuchel's side 'got away with it' having put in a sloppy display in Saturday's drab encounter with minnows Andorra. After starting World Cup qualification, and the German's reign, with Wembley wins against Albania and Latvia, things fell flat against the 173rd-best team in the world in Barcelona. England were booed by many of the 6,950 travelling fans after a scoreless first half against Andorra, with further jeers greeting the final whistle after Tuchel's men failed to kick on from Kane's 50th-minute goal. The candid head coach felt the Euro 2024 runners-up 'played with fire' due to their lack of 'seriousness and urgency', with the skipper sharing similar sentiments. 'It wasn't our greatest performance,' Kane said. 'I don't think it's one many people are going to remember, that's for sure, but it's three points in the bag. 'But, yeah, for sure we know we can play better in all aspects, both with and without the ball. 'It's down to us now to go analyse it, look back and try and learn from it because condition-wise it's going to be very similar to next summer - dry pitch, warm weather, humid. 'We were just lacking quality, looked a bit fatigued both physically and mentally and, yeah, we got away with it because we're a good team and they had a couple of half-chances there where we didn't get punished. But ultimately, it wasn't good enough.' Kane has scored in all three matches under Tuchel, his former manager at Bayern Munich, with the latest effort extending England's all-time top scorer's record goal haul to 72. Noni Madueke capped a man-of-the-match display by providing the cross for the winner and the captain felt this kind of match cried out for the directness of a talent like the Chelsea winger. 'He was really good today,' Kane said as attention turns to Tuesday's friendly against Senegal. 'I think in these type of games, you need players like Noni who are good one-v-one to sometimes make a difference. 'It's a dry pitch, not easy to move the ball quickly, so sometimes you rely on individual quality and I thought he was probably our best outlet today.'
