Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. in practice melee with Titans: ‘Went a little bit too far'
The second-year signal-caller had just unloaded a deep touchdown pass to wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud III when a scrum broke out and players from both sidelines joined the melee.
'They had a lot of words throughout practice, so I gave my words and went a little bit too far. I don't know. [But] that was somebody else.' Penix said after practice, according to Sports Illustrated.
Penix emerged from the skirmish uninjured, although his teammates had to come to his aid, per ESPN.
'I don't know where I was at in it,' Penix said, according to the outlet. 'It was a lot of people. I knew I was down there somewhere. I wasn't the only one, though.
'I'm glad they did, because obviously that's not something that we want to be doing in practice,' Penix continued. 'We want to get all reps in, get that good work in. But it went how it went. But to see the team have my back and they were there, make sure they protect me. A lot of guys asked me if I was good, and it was good to know that those guys had my back.'

Falcons quarterback coach DJ Williams told ESPN the team would rather not have its QB1 getting into fights on the field, but took 'some positive out of it.'
'Like you saw the guys take up for him, and I think that speaks to his leadership and who he is in that locker room,' Williams said. 'Obviously as coaches we're upstairs, they're downstairs. We don't really see a lot, but obviously he has a relationship and the trust of the guys because everybody ran to his defense. So, I think that's a good thing for the Falcons.'

Penix, who was drafted No. 8 overall by the Falcons in 2024, is entering his first full season as Atlanta's starting quarterback.
'That's what it's about, you know, protecting your brothers. That I grew up on,' Penix said. 'We've got each other's backs to ride with each other, right or wrong.'

Titans rookie QB Cam Ward has a rough outing in 2nd preseason game
Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward looked pretty good in his first preseason game. It's not the end of the world that he took a step back in his second preseason game, but it definitely didn't go smoothly. Ward, the first overall pick of this year's NFL Draft, has the physical tools to make it in the NFL. His arm strength has been obvious. He fits right in on an NFL field and looks mostly comfortable running the offense. But on Friday he misfired on a few passes, which will give the Titans some teaching points. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Ward got three series against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night, after getting two in the opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. It wasn't as crisp as last week for Ward. He completed just 2-of-7 passes for 42 yards before his night was done. It's not unusual for a rookie to have some rough patches in the preseason. Ward had one on Friday night. The Titans got to see how Ward reacted to being backed up near his own end zone to start Friday night's outing. The Falcons punted at the end of their first possession and downed it at the 6-yard line. He got the offense out of trouble. On second down Ward moved to his right to escaped a bit of pressure and patiently waited for Elic Ayomanor crossing the field, and hit him for a nice 35-yard gain. The drive stalled but it wasn't all Ward's fault. On second down he had a great pass downfield to Van Jefferson, but it went off Jefferson's hands. The throw, plus another incompletion downfield earlier in the drive that didn't count due to a penalty, showed off Ward's impressive arm strength. A third down incompletion was Ward's fault. After a fake handoff he threw quickly and sidearm to Chimere Dike and was way off target. The Titans punted. Ward had to wait a while for his second series because the Titans defense had a pick-6 to give them a 6-0 lead (Tennessee kicker Joey Slye missed the PAT attempt). The rest of his night didn't produce any highlights. When Ward got the ball again, the field position wasn't much better. The Titans started on their own 11-yard line after a Falcons punt. A run, a short completion and a false start penalty left the Titans facing a third-and-13 as the second quarter started. Ward tried Dike over the middle, and it was wide and low for an incompletion. It seemed to be a bit of an issue with his anticipation and where Dike would be on the throw. The third series started with another inaccurate pass, as he threw too high on first down and it landed incomplete. Ward's third down pass wasn't terrible, as he threw a fade to Ayomanor. But it was incomplete. Ayomanor got caught up with the defensive back and couldn't get to Ward's pass, which was too long. It was another three-and-out for the Titans. That's how Ward's night ended, on a down note. The mistakes are a reason why the Titans are getting Ward some preseason reps in August. The Falcons are going the other way. They did not play second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in either of their first two preseason games. Kirk Cousins hasn't played in the preseason either; Easton Stick started both games. The Titans feel the need to get Ward acclimated before the season starts. Ward's first preseason game went well. The Titans went three-and-out on his first series, but on the second series he was 5-of-6 for 67 yards and the drive ended with a Tony Pollard touchdown run. Ward looked comfortable in that outing. Ward wasn't as good in his second preseason game. It's rare for a quarterback like C.J. Stroud or Jayden Daniels to practically never have any downswings as a rookie starting from Week 1 on, and Ward is likely to have some slumps. His first regular-season game will be against the Denver Broncos, perhaps the best defense in the NFL, and that won't be easy. Ward has already shown he has the skills to make it in the NFL. Now he has to show how he reacts after having a poor game.

Not many expected Russell Wilson to suit up for the New York Giants in last week's preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills. On the morning of the matchup, the NFL world was shocked to hear that Wilson would be getting the nod to start. It didn't have anything to do with a quarterback battle between the trio of Jameis Winston, Jaxson Dart, and Wilson. It was as simple as Wilson wanted to play, and head coach Brian Daboll let him. "I definitely wanted to play," Wilson said last week. "Anytime you get to be in the white lines, it's a good thing. It's a blessing. Man, I'm just grateful to wear the blue, and what a great day it was. Dabs and I were both on the same page. He knew I wanted to play and vice versa. He wanted me to play, and I was ready to go. I love playing." Will Wilson make it two weeks in a row? Daboll wasn't so sure on Thursday. While the head admitted that the Giants "have an idea" of which starters will play, and who will ride the bench, nothing was sorted out for certain. "We'll go out here, have our walk-through today, sit down with the medical staff, get their input where the guys that have been not practicing are, who can play, who can't, and decide what we're gonna do." For what it's worth, Daboll sounded like he embraces the idea of getting the starting quarterback in the mix for some time, since games can't truly be simulated in practice. With Wilson wearing that red jersey every day, he's off limits to the defense. "There's no substitute for tackling, there's no substitute for cleaning the pocket, no substitute for run after catch when you're going to get hit, there's no substitute for being live as a quarterback in the pocket," Daboll added. Perhaps that's a sign. At the same time, Wilson has plenty of experience. Being in the NFL as a full-time starter since 2012, the live reps aren't as important for him as they are for a rookie like Jaxson Dart. But if the Giants are able to get Wilson out on the field to get him in rhythm as best as they can before the regular season, they should get the veteran his reps in his new system. This year, Wilson is playing for a different team for the second season in a row. Last year, Wilson joined the Pittsburgh Steelers after spending some time with the Denver Broncos. In Pittsburgh, Wilson started 12 games, including a playoff matchup. With the Giants, he's expected to be the Week 1 starter. That first game will mark his 200th regular-season game. But the kicking competition is certainly on now. The Falcons' other option is Lenny Krieg, a German kicker. And on his first preseason field goal attempt, Krieg drilled a 57-yard field goal. "The Falcons signed German-born kicker Lenny Krieg this offseason to compete with Koo for the starting role. Krieg, who turns 23 in August, impressed at the combine as a part of the league's International Player Pathway Program. He was the only kicker to make all 14 field-goal attempts without a miss." Koo is due to make $4.25 million this season, the fourth-highest for a kicker in the league. That could be another reason he's a cut candidate. Krieg is ready for the battle. I try to control what I can control, and whatever is out of my control is just something that's going to happen."
