Inspired bowling by Matt Henry denies SA victory against Black Caps

TimesLIVE26-07-2025
A closely contested T20 Tri-Series final at the Harare Sports Club that had twists and turns and saved its best for last.
Going into the last over, it was still anyone's game with South Africa needing seven runs from the six balls to win but they were denied the spoils by the inspired bowling of Matt Henry who helped New Zealand to a three-run victory.
Henry, who ended the series as the top wicket-taker with ten scalps, showed nerves of steel with the wickets of Dewald Brevis and George Linde during the drama-filled final over.
There was another moment of drama in the closing stages as Michael Bracewell dropped Corbin Bosch at deep midwicket after the dismissal of Brevis to give South Arica a lifeline as they needed seven runs from four balls.
Two balls later, this over took another dramatic turn when Linde was caught by Daryl Mitchell at long-on and the final ball of the match saw Henry's slower ball get the better of Senuran Muthusamy to secure victory.

Aiden Markram embraces 'fearless cricket' as Proteas launch new T20 era under Shukri Conrad

South Africa T20I captain Aiden Markram told the media on Friday that he wants the team to play with freedom, take the game on, and entertain as the Shukri Conrad era continues in the shortest format of the game. Coach Shukri Conrad is in his second T20I series, having opened his account in the recently concluded Tri-Series against hosts Zimbabwe and New Zealand last month. With Conrad's era in T20I cricket still in its infancy, many have wondered how the coach wants the side to play, and what the blueprint for the team will be heading into the 2026 T20 World Cup. T20I captain Markram hinted at the team's new blueprint, citing freedom as one of the key elements that define their approach under Conrad. "Already, we've had quite a few changes in personnel. Some guys have moved on. We've got some younger guys in the squad as well. So, it's really just about unlocking the guys to be the best versions of themselves — play with absolute freedom, take the game on, and entertain," Markram told the media on Friday. "That's what T20 cricket is all about. We know that if we play good cricket against whichever team, it's going to be entertaining and a good show for people to watch. So that's where we're at mentally — trying to unlock that from the players themselves."

Taylor top scores but New Zealand dominate Zimbabwe

BULAWAYO - Former Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor top-scored in his first Test match after a lengthy ban but could not prevent New Zealand dominating the first day of the second Test on Thursday. Taylor made 44 as Zimbabwe were bundled out for 125 by fast bowlers Matt Henry (five for 40) and debutant Zakary Foulkes (four for 38) at Queens Sports Club. New Zealand finished the first day 49 runs ahead, reaching 174 for one at the close. Devon Conway (79 not out) and Will Young (74) put on 162 for the first wicket before Young was bowled off an inside edge by Trevor Gwandu shortly before the close. Taylor, 39, was banned for three-and-a-half years in January 2022 for breaching the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption code as well as a drugs offence. He had not played Test cricket since captaining Zimbabwe against Bangladesh in Harare in July 2021 in a match in which he scored 81 and 92. The former captain opened the batting and saw four wickets fall to Henry and Foulkes before he was fifth out, caught at cover off Henry with the total on 83. He faced 107 balls and hit six fours. Foulkes and fellow fast bowlers Jacob Duffy and Matthew Fisher all made their Test debuts, with Nathan Smith and Will O'Rourke injured and Michael Bracewell released to play in the Hundred competition in England. Fisher claimed his first Test wicket when he had last man Tanaka Chivanga caught at mid-off. New Zealand were again captained by Mitch Santner after regular captain Tom Latham failed a fitness test on an injured left shoulder. Henry continued in the outstanding form in Zimbabwe which earned him player of the series honours in a Twenty20 triangular series and player of the match in the first Test, which New Zealand won by nine wickets at the same venue last week. It was Henry's sixth five-wicket haul in Tests. Foulkes dismissed the experienced duo of Sean Williams and captain Craig Ervine, swinging the ball away from the two left-handers. In a near-repeat of the first day of the first Test, Conway and Young built on

Ryan Rickelton eyes Proteas T20I opener role: I won't change my game

Ryan Rickelton says he has no plans to rein in his aggressive batting style as he targets a permanent spot at the top of the Proteas T20I order. With Quinton de Kock absent, Temba Bavuma seemingly out of contention and Reeza Hendricks not in the current squad, the Proteas are looking for a fresh opening combination ahead of next year's T20 World Cup. That task will likely fall to Rickelton and 20-year-old Lhuan-dre Pretorius, two left-handed wicketkeepers separated by a decade in age and experience. Speaking from Darwin, where South Africa begin a three-match T20I series against Australia on Sunday, Rickelton made it clear that his approach will not change. 'I'm still trying to establish myself in the T20 side but I don't think there'll be any expectation for me to change anything that I've been doing in these last two years. It's just an opportunity for me to hopefully claim that opening spot for this South African side, going into the world cup and further on past that.' Rickelton believes the return of Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen will give him the freedom to attack from the start. 'The way the team is structured fits the mould of how they want me to play too. I am always looking to land that first punch and get the side off to a good start no matter who's alongside me.' ALSO: Brevis silences the noise Rickelton, along with Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada, was rested for the recent Tri-Series in Zimbabwe as the Proteas prepare for a gruelling schedule. After the Australia tour, they face England, Pakistan and India, followed by the SA20, a short West Indies series, the T20 World Cup and the IPL. Rickelton says his maiden IPL stint taught him valuable lessons in managing the mental demands of constant cricket. 'Once you get into the groove of playing a lot of cricket it's great when things are going well, but it can be tough if they're not. It's all about finding the right balance mentally.' Proteas T20I squad: Aiden Markram (c), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Nandre Burger, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Nqaba Peter, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Prenelan Subrayen, Rassie van der Dussen. T20I series fixtures (SA times): Sunday at 11:15: 1st T20I, Darwin Tuesday at 11:15: 2nd T20I, Darwin Next Saturday at 11:15: 3rd T20I, Cairns The post Rickelton: I won't change my game appeared first on SA Cricketmag.
