Caleigh Higgins, only a sophomore, settles into role at first base for St. Charles East. Her swing? ‘Warming up.'

Chicago Tribune01-05-2025
St. Charles East's Caleigh Higgins almost underestimates her own power.
The sophomore first baseman thought her at-bat in the first inning was a simple pop-up.
'I'm always going to keep working and not let one at-bat determine how I play,' Higgins said. 'With my size, I've always had the sense if the ball was anywhere near me, I was going to swing.'
And that first swing Wednesday? It wasn't merely a pop-up.
Higgins hit a two-run home run to spark the host Saints to a 10-0 DuKane Conference victory over Geneva in five innings.
Junior designated hitter Hayden Sujack hit two homers and drove in three runs for St. Charles East (11-10, 2-3). Senior infielder Holly Smith added two RBIs, while senior pitcher Kyli Dunn struck out four.
Sophomore outfielder Caroline Winsininski had the only hit for the Vikings (5-12, 0-5).
Senior shortstop Addison Wolf was at second base when Higgins — who also scored twice — stepped up for her first plate appearance. She felt a surge of excitement heading toward home.
'Caleigh is warming up to us,' Wolf said. 'She was definitely more quiet at the beginning of the season. Now, we're really getting to know her and she's a really good addition to our team.
'We knew as soon as she got here she was going to do good things.'
St. Charles East coach Jarod Gutesha said the signs of Higgins' emergence were evident before her breakthrough moment.
'She has swung the bat really well the last couple of days, both in practice and in our game (Tuesday),' he said. 'If you watch her in a round of batting practice, it doesn't take long to figure out she can hit the ball a long way.
'She's getting into that comfort zone. It was great to see that ball go over the scoreboard.'
The 6-foot Higgins has a great swing radius and prototypical size to generate power. Playing center on the basketball team also has improved her agility, quickness and balance.
Her improvement has been incremental in softball, learning to counter different pitching styles.
'The pitching is much more advanced, but I never get too far ahead of myself,' Higgins said. 'I just think one base at a time and go from there. I've worked on my power and how to drive the ball.'
Higgins bats sixth in the order for the Saints, underscoring the team's developing faith in her immense promise and potential.
In that first inning, Sujack hit a two-run homer as well.
'She's been working really hard, especially in practice, and I'm really proud of her,' Sujack said of Higgins. 'Her improvement since the beginning of the season has been substantial.
'She's doing a really good job of slowing things down, making it simple and playing her game.'
Sujack said Higgins is so quiet it proved virtually impossible to mentor her in the beginning. But Higgins' game is catching up, and that speaks volumes.
'Earlier this season, I was in a little bit of a slump and it felt great just to bounce back and hit,' Higgins said. 'I always try to get myself into a good mindset and make sure I'm only talking positively about myself.'
Higgins got start in softball at age 8 when her father signed her up for a local recreational league. That was the spark she needed, and the game has become her private passion.
Striking out in her first varsity career at-bat is now a long and distant memory.
'My favorite part about the game is just the energy you get and being with the rest of the team,' she said. 'When I'm not playing, I just focus on school.'

Jimmy Graham hurdling Roman Harper is the Saints Play of the Day

There are now just 19 days left until the 2025 New Orleans Saints season begins! To celebrate being under the 20-day threshold, let's have some fun with a more chaotic highlight than any one important moment in the team's history. Back in 2014, the Saints stumbled out of the gate. They had finished 11-5 and made it to the NFC Divisional round the year prior, so there were some expectations. New Orleans was 3-4 heading into their Week 9 matchup against the Carolina Panthers and had won the week before. Drew Brees found star tight end Jimmy Graham early and often, including the specific play that we are highlighting today. The game was still tied with just under seven minutes left in the first quarter, when Brees targeted Graham on the run. Graham took the ball forward some more and hurdled former teammate Roman Harper en route to a 19-yard gain. The former basketball star's athletic gifts were on display as he had one of the smoothest hurdles you will ever see. It was surely made sweeter for him that he gained bragging rights over a former teammate who was now playing for a rival. You can watch the play for yourself here. New Orleans would finish the year 7-9 and then had that same record for the next two campaigns as well. New Orleans also traded Graham for Seattle Seahawks center Max Unger before the next season. The tight end later returned in 2023, for what would be the end of his career.

Sean Payton says story of Saints' walk-on player would be a better movie than 'Invincible'

Sean Payton will happily procure talent from anywhere. The Denver Broncos' coach has repeatedly said it doesn't matter if the player is a high draft pick, a low draft pick, a big free agency signing or an undrafted free agent addition. If the player proves they can play, they'll get an opportunity -- even over more high-profile teammates. A great example of that is former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Lewis, who played under Payton in 2006. "We had a returner in New Orleans that never played high school or college football," Payton told Denver reporters last week. "Do you guys remember the days where they would literally have an open tryout? Guys would show up in blue jeans and coaches would be patient enough timing 40-[yard dashes]. This Michael Lewis shows up, he's working two doors down at the Budweiser factory. [He] runs one of these 40s, and everyone looks at their watch and you're only supposed to run one. Then they said, 'Mike, would you run another one for us?' Sure enough, he goes and runs another one and then, 'All right, we're going to invite you to…' "Then he comes, and he's at training camp, and then he makes the 53-[man roster] and a few years later, he's the Pro Bowl punt returner. That's a movie, 'Beer Man.' That's a lot better than the Vince Papale story. Every time I'd see him in the hallway, I said, 'I want the rights.' He played for me, and he works still for the Saints. It's an amazing story and I tell this story because it's better. It was dark [near the Saints facility on] Airline Drive. He made the wrong right-handed turn. Instead of the Budweiser, two doors down were the Saints. That's pretty amazing. We're rooting for them all.' Payton said the story would make a better movie than "Invincible," a popular film about Vince Papale starring Mark Wahlberg. Statistically, Payton's right. Papale spent three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and he had one 15-yard catch in 41 appearances. He was also a key special teams player and recovered two fumbles. In typical Hollywood fashion, the movie does not mention that Papale had two years of semipro football experience before joining the Eagles. Lewis also played indoor and semipro football before joining the Saints, and he spent part of the 2000 offseason with the Eagles before being cut. He tried out for New Orleans in 2001 and was named a first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler after leading the NFL in kickoff (625) and punt return (1,807) yards in 2002. Lewis spent six seasons with the Saints and he holds franchise records for punt return yards (1,482) and kickoff return yards (5,903). He also holds an NFL record for the most combined return yards in a single season (2,432 in 2002). A member of the Saints Hall of Fame, Lewis totaled 8,377 all-purpose yards and scored five touchdowns in his career. In terms of NFL success, that's a way better story than "Invincible." Lewis approved the development of a movie about his career in 2019, but it's hard to find any recent updates on the status of that film. If the movie is eventually made, it will be a must-watch for all football fans. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Did you know: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.
