A Derbyshire woman attacked the friend she was staying with after she caught her having sex in her home. Derby Crown Court heard how Demi Parker hit the woman over the head with a box and threw ashtrays and vases at the Swadlincote property. The 24-year-old then went to her family home that she'd been banished from and burnt the internet cables and kicked a gas meter after her sister refused to let her in or hand over money. Handing her a seven month jail term, suspended for two years, Recorder Helen Malcolm KC said: 'You committed these offences in February and April of this year and certainly in relation to the April offences you were the subject of a suspended sentence order. Georgina Miller, prosecuting said the first set of offences took place in Elmsleigh Drive, Midway, in February this year. She said the defendant went out and returned home with a man known only as 'Shorty' who she had been drinking with. The prosecutor said they went upstairs and her friend followed them only to find them having sex. She asked them both to leave. Miss Miller said: 'Shorty left but the defendant became aggressive, throwing vases and ashtrays around. She then picked up a white box and hit (the victim) over the head with it and bit her arm.' The prosecutor said after being arrested and bailed, Parker then turned up at her former family home in Brookdale Road, Swadlincote, demanding money from her sister. She said: 'There had been significant issues which had led her to being kicked out, she demanded the money which her sister refused so she started kicking the front door. 'She then used a lighter to damage the Wifi cable and kicked the gas box. The police arrived and she was sitting on the doorstep having said to her sister 'give me some money or I will set fire to the house'. 'When she was arrested she lashed out and struck a police officer with her arm to the face.' Parker, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage and assaulting an emergency worker. She has 10 previous court appearances for 25 offences, Miss Miller told the court. David Watts, mitigating, said: "The right place to start is Miss Parker's apology to all involved. 'She is in a much better place now and recognises the harm she caused, expressing her regret. Her friend had provided her with somewhere to live when she became homeless and Miss Parker knows she let her friend down and betrayed her trust.' As part of the suspended sentence order, the judge ordered Parker to attend 20 rehabilitation sessions with the probation service and a six-month drug rehabilitation requirement. She also handed her a restraining order not to contact any of the victims or go to their addresses until further order.

Pakistan suspends train services after railway bombing in insurgency-hit Balochistan
QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan's railways on Monday suspended all train services to and from an insurgency-hit southwestern province for four days after separatists blew up a railway track, derailing six cars of a passenger train, officials said. No one was harmed in the attack Sunday in Mastung, a district in Balochistan, said railways spokesman Ikram Ullah. Engineers were repairing the damaged track, he said. The Jaffer Express was traveling from Quetta, the provincial capital, to the northern city of Peshawar when assailants targeted it with a bomb, Ullah said. The banned Baloch Liberation Army, in a statement, claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes months after BLA fighters hijacked a train in the same district, killing 21 hostages before security forces were able to kill 33 assailants. The attack came as Pakistan prepares to mark its 78th Independence Day on Aug. 14. Balochistan has long been the scene of insurgency by separatists seeking independence from the central government. The province is also home to militants linked to the Pakistani Taliban. Local administrator Shahid Khan said the government imposed curfews in some areas of the district of Bajaur along the Afghan border in the troubled northwest and advised residents to stay indoors, prompting many to flee to safer places in preparation for a possible security operation against the Pakistani Taliban. Bajaur was once a stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban, who are known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, and the group has resurfaced there. TTP is a separate group but closely allied to the Afghan Taliban.

Priest in ‘serious but stable condition' following attack in Downpatrick
A Co Down priest remains in a 'serious but stable' condition in hospital after being subjected to a 'brutal attack' in his church on Sunday. Father John Murray was reportedly struck to the head at St Patrick's Church. He was approached by a man who asked if he would hear his confession ahead of the Sunday morning service, and attacked as shocked parishioners arrived for mass. Father Murray had been due to retire later this week. Police have said the attack may be linked to the death of a man in Downpatrick. A 30-year-old man remains in police custody being questioned on suspicion of murder after a man was found dead at an address in the Marian Park area at about 12pm on Sunday. A prayer vigil was held at St Brigid's Church in the town on Sunday night. On Monday morning, the Downpatrick Family of Parishes said: 'Canon Murray continues to receive exceptional care. 'He is stable and comfortable.' They added that St Patrick's Church and its grounds remained closed. SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath described shock and disbelief in Downpatrick following the events of Sunday. 'First of all the community would want to have thoughts and prayers with the family of the deceased individual, and I know that that community in and around the Marian Park area will wrap around them and support them,' he told the BBC. 'Then the shocking nature and the graphic nature of the attack on Father Murray on what was supposed to be the commencement of his retirement, in a public manner and in daylight, exposes an awful lot of vulnerability in that scenario but also more widely, for clergy across Ireland, and other workers in the community, what can happen in the blink of an eye.'
