The next edition of March Madness will stay the same size in 2026.
The NCAA is sticking with 68 teams for this upcoming season for the field size of the men's and women's basketball tournaments – though the discussion of future expansion is still on the table.
'Expanding the tournament fields is no longer being contemplated for the 2026 men's and women's basketball championships,' said Dan Gavitt, the NCAA's senior vice president of basketball. 'However, the committees will continue conversations on whether to recommend expanding to 72 or 76 teams in advance of the 2027 championships.'
According to the Associated Press, the spring NCAA president Charlie Baker expressed interest in expansion and wanted a decision made in the next few months.
In 1939, the inaugural NCAA men's basketball tournament had eight teams. It expanded to 16 teams in 1951, jumped up to 32 teams in 1975, and then doubled to 64 teams in 1985. It expanded to 68 teams in 2011.
The women's tournament began as a 32-team field in 1982 and adopted the 64-team field format in 1994. The current format of 68 teams has been in effect since 2022.
The 2026 NCAA men's Final Four will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. In 2027, it will be at Ford Field in Detroit.
The NCAA women's Final Four in 2026 will be held in Phoenix at PHX Arena, while Columbus, Ohio, plays host in 2027 at Nationwide Arena.

The Tiger Beat: Rain, rain go away

Good morning, everyone! The Tigers suffered a rather abysmal loss to the White Sox last night, thanks to some very rough pitching from the fifth inning onward. Despite a few rally efforts, the team simply weren't able to undo the damage. Let's just hope that this, unlike the weather, is not a 'when it rains it pours' situation. The Tigers will face the White Sox one more time this afternoon and are hoping to claim a series win. Meanwhile, we've got lots of fun tidbits in today's links, including a look at which Tigers took the number three spot in ESPN's Top 50 players list (the answer will not surprise you), and a few minor league moves. On the general baseball side of things, Shohei Ohtani could have new legal woes, and baseball players share what horror movies have them shaking (some answers WILL surprise you). Let's get right into it! Detroit Tigers News Spencer Torkelson's reaction to getting that go-ahead home run in last night's bizarre win. Rain delays never slow down the TV crew. Some minor league moves to keep an eye on. ESPN ranks the top 50 players in baseball right now, and here's what they had to say about Tarik Skubal, who ranked third (behind only Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani): After winning the Cy Young Award last season, Skubal has gotten better in 2025: higher strikeout rate, lower walk rate, lower batting average allowed and pitching slightly deeper into games. His SO-BB% is one of the highest of all time. He doesn't have the AL Cy Young locked up, given the strong competition, but the consensus view is he's the top starter in the majors. AL Central News Would Steven Kwan be a reliable emergency contact? I suppose that depends who you ask. A look at why Luke Keaschall was named AL Player of the Week. Jose Ramirez has his 27th multi-home run game for the Guardians. MLB News Which horror movies scare MLB players? (Jack Flaherty cameo!) Mark your calendars, the postseason schedule is here. An updated ranking of all 30 farm teams from MLB dot com. (The Tigers come in at 6th after ranking number 1 in the pre-season.) The Mets hit so many home runs against the Braves, they ran out of home run fireworks. Shohei Ohtani's legal woes persist as he and his agent are being sued over a real estate development project in Hawaii.

USC football tied to Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer sports betting story

On November 19, 2022, Lincoln Riley and USC football defeated crosstown rival UCLA, 48-45. It was arguably the Trojans' biggest victory under Riley to date, sending the team to the Pac-12 Championship Game and keeping their College Football Playoff hopes alive. Now, almost three years later, the game is suddenly back in the news again. Monday night, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer's Venmo transactions went viral on social media. On November 20, 2022, the day after the game, Mateer sent a payment titled 'Sports Gambling (UCLA vs USC)'. NCAA rules do not allow student-athletes to gamble on NCAA events. Mateer, who was a freshman at Washington State at the time, obviously would have been in violation of this policy if he was found to have done so. The story is especially ironic given that Mateer now plays for Oklahoma, whom Riley used to coach. Nearly all Sooner fans cannot stand Riley, and have held a grudge against him ever since he left Norman for Los Angeles back in November of 2021. For Oklahoma's starting quarterback to potentially get in trouble with the NCAA and maybe face a suspension due to gambling on one of Riley's USC games would be yet another unique twist in the saga—and one that USC fans, unlike those in Norman, would likely find rather funny. We will see where the truth leads. Even if the story turns out to be nothing, it's still a remarkable plot point near the end of the 2025 college football offseason.

Why D'Angelo Russell May Be The Most Important Signing Of The Summer

The 2025 offseason has been an eventful one, including multiple blockbuster trades and numerous impactful role players changing teams. But the more I think about it, there is one signing that could be more important than the rest – depending on what version of this player they get. The Dallas Mavericks Sign D'Angelo Russell After lucking into the first overall pick and using it to draft Cooper Flagg, the Dallas Mavericks had a relatively quiet offseason – re-signing Kyrie Irving, extending Daniel Gafford, and adding D'Angelo Russell to a two-year, 11.7 million dollar deal (the second year being a player option). That last transaction is the subject of this analysis. On paper, Russell's contract is a good value add. He is set to make 5.7 million dollars next season, but my formula estimates his production value to be roughly 9.9 million. However, given this team's roster construction, the Mavericks will need Russell to be worth way more than ten million dollars in 2025-26 if they plan on maximizing this team. (*Note: In today's financial landscape, ten million dollars of production is what you'd see from a mid/high-level bench player. As we will explain, Russell will need to be at least a solid starting point guard, which is closer to 17-20 million dollars of production). Why Russell Is So Important To The Mavericks The 2025-26 Mavericks project to be pretty deep. They have not one, not two, but three (!!) starting caliber centers in Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, and Anthony Davis (the latter being a perennial All-NBA caliber performer). They also have a surplus of rangy wings/forwards in Flagg, PJ Washington, Naji Marshall, Max Christie, Caleb Martin, and Klay Thompson. This gives the Mavericks a ton of size, athleticism, and lineup versatility – three attributes we often see from high-end modern-day teams. However, the Mavericks are sorely lacking in one key area: on-ball creation. Davis is a career 24.1 PPG scorer, but he is at his best when he has the table set for him. Meanwhile, Kyrie Irving, the team's main floor general, could miss the entirety of the season as he rehabs a torn ACL. Even if he does come back, it isn't realistic to expect him to be close to his usual All-Star self. Jaden Hardy and Brandon Williams are also on the payroll, but they lack the body of work to feel good about either of them carrying a massive load. This leaves the onus on Russell to be this team's primary generator of offense. What makes this dynamic so interesting is that Russell is one of the most polarizing players in the league. On one hand, he is a crafty scorer (career 17.6 PPG), solid shooter (career 36.5% from three), and gifted passer (96th percentile in Passer Rating last season). But, on the other hand, he is also a below-average defender (28th percentile Defensive Estimated Plus-Minus, per Dunks & Threes) with a history of inconsistent offensive showings (I've heard Ben Taylor refer to him as "Trick or Treat" Russell because you never know what you are going to get from him). The last we saw of Russell, he looked more like the "Trick" version of this moniker – averaging just 12.9 PPG on 50.8% true shooting during his 29-game reunion tour with the Brooklyn Nets. To be fair to him, that showing was on a depleted 26-win team that wasn't exactly aiming for a playoff berth. That last note doesn't mean Russell is completely off the hook. He will be 30 by the time the 2026 NBA Playoffs roll around, and one has to wonder how many treats the soon-to-be eleven-year veteran still has in his bag. If Russell can be the guy he was in 2023-24 (18 PPG on 58.8% TS), this Mavericks roster will make a lot more sense and challenge for a top six spot in the loaded Western Conference. But if he's anything less than that, Dallas will certainly be a bottom ten offense in the association. If that's the case, they will be lucky to return to the play-in tournament. Arguably no 2025 free agent wields this type of power, making Russell one of the most circumstantial additions of this offseason.
