PSX rises over 1,050 points on robust results

Express Tribune21-04-2025
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday closed bullish as the benchmark KSE-100 index surged over 1,050 points amid speculation ahead of major corporate earnings announcements in the ongoing week.
Growing expectations about the resolution of circular debt crisis and China debt rollover were the key developments, which took the index to the day's high. Robust quarterly results, unveiled by key players such as Meezan Bank and Sazgar Engineering, further energised the market.
Ahsan Mehanti of Arif Habib Corp commented that stocks closed bullish, led by across-the-board activity, amid speculation ahead of major earnings announcements in the current week. The government's deliberations on solving the circular debt crisis and China debt rollover supported the index's close near session highs.
Mehanti added that the expected receipt of IMF's tranche under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) next month, alongside potential monetary easing amid thin inflation, played the role of catalysts in bullish close at the PSX.
At the end of trading, the benchmark KSE-100 index recorded an increase of 1,067.79 points, or 0.91%, and settled at 118,383.38.
In its review, Topline Securities noted that bulls asserted their dominance in Monday's trading session, where the benchmark index surged to the intra-day high of 1,511 points. It closed at 118,383, marking a strong gain of 1,068 points, or 0.91%.
The rally was largely driven by better-than-expected corporate earnings, which bolstered investor sentiment and sparked widespread buying, it elaborated.
Among the key highlights were the impressive results announced by Meezan Bank and Sazgar Engineering Works. Both companies beat expectations and emerged as the stars of the day, driving significant investor interest and uplifting the broader market tone.
Topline added that heavyweight stocks played a crucial role in powering the index higher, with Meezan Bank, MCB Bank, UBL, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines and Hub Power contributing 827 points.
In its report, Arif Habib Limited (AHL) commented that prices fully filled the "Tariff Gap" with the index reaching the day's high above 118,800.
Some 58 shares rose while 38 fell, with Meezan Bank (+9.13%), MCB Bank (+4.41%) and UBL (+1.72%) contributing the most to the index gains. On the flip side, Mari Petroleum (-1.45%), Engro Fertilisers (-1.78%) and HBL (-1.74%) were the biggest drags, it said.
Among corporate results, Meezan Bank announced 1QCY25 earnings per share (EPS) of Rs12.3, a decrease of 11% year-on-year, and dividend of Rs7 per share. The earnings contracted due to a dip in net interest income and higher operational expenditures.
Additionally, AHL said, Sazgar Engineering Works (+2.73%) announced 9MFY25 EPS of Rs212.66, an increase of 189% year-on-year. The company declared a cash dividend of Rs12 per share for 3QFY25, taking the payout to Rs32 per share for 9MFY25.
JS Global analyst Muhammad Hasan Ather remarked that bulls dominated the trading floor as investors capitalised on attractive valuations. The majority of buying was seen in banking stocks, where Meezan Bank, MCB Bank and UBL alone contributed 648 points.
"Looking ahead, we expect some corporate results-based rally while budget-related updates and the upcoming monetary policy will also drive market sentiment. Therefore, investors are advised to adopt a buy-on-dips stance, with a focus on oil and gas, automobile and cement sectors," Ather added.
Overall trading volumes increased to 672.4 million shares compared with Friday's tally of 425.1 million. The value of shares traded during the day was Rs36.4 billion. Shares of 451 companies were traded. Of these, 252 stocks closed higher, 158 fell and 41 remained unchanged.
Cnergyico PK was the volume leader with trading in 103 million shares, gaining Rs0.01 to close at Rs8.55. It was followed by Power Cement with 62.6 million shares, gaining Rs1.23 to close at Rs13.54 and The Bank of Punjab with 42.6 million shares, gaining Rs0.25 to close at Rs11.42. Foreign investors sold shares worth Rs313.8 million, the National Clearing Company said.

PSX closes in red as investors book profits

Listen to article The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) ended Friday's session on a weak note, with the KSE-100 index slipping over 260 points to close just below 145,400 as investors booked profits after a brief rally. The market opened on a positive note, climbing to intra-day high of 146,813 points on selective blue-chip buying, but momentum faded amid concerns over a swelling trade deficit, declining foreign exchange reserves and macroeconomic headwinds, prompting a late-session sell-off ahead of the weekend. Engro Holdings, Fauji Fertiliser Company (FFC), Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC) and MCB Bank were among the top positive contributors, whereas Engro Fertilisers, Lucky Cement, Systems Limited, Mari Petroleum and Hubco dragged the index down. "Stocks closed under pressure amid profit-taking in overbought shares. Concerns remained over a $2.8 billion trade deficit for July, up 44% year-on-year (YoY)," said Ahsan Mehanti, MD of Arif Habib Corp. Foreign outflows, concerns over provincial tax collection shortfalls and the missed cash surplus target under IMF conditions as well as political noise were the catalysts for bearish close at the PSX, he added. At the end of trading, the benchmark KSE-100 index posted a decline of 264.34 points, or 0.18%, and settled at 145,382.80. "Continuing its momentum, the KSE-100 index opened on a positive note and touched the intra-day high of 1,166 points (up 0.8%)," Topline Securities noted in its market review. However, investors preferred to book gains before the weekend as the index declined to close at 145,383, down 0.18%. The top positive contribution to the index came from Engro Holdings, FFC, OGDC and MCB Bank as they cumulatively contributed 395 points. On the other hand, Engro Fertilisers, Lucky Cement, Systems Limited, Mari Petroleum and Hubco weighed the index down by 399 points, it said. Traded value-wise, OGDC (Rs5.44 billion), FFC (Rs4.68 billion), Pakistan Petroleum (Rs4.19 billion) and Pakistan State Oil (Rs3.57 billion) dominated the trading activity, Topline added. Arif Habib Limited (AHL) noted that the KSE-100 enjoyed another solid week, rising 3.08% to close above 145,000. On Friday, 38 shares gained while 62 declined, with Engro Holdings (+2.66%), FFC (+0.86%) and OGDC (+1.27%) driving the index higher, while Engro Fertilisers (-2.64%), Lucky Cement (-1.98%) and Systems Limited (-1.61%) were the biggest drags. It mentioned that remittances from overseas Pakistanis rose 7.4% YoY to $3.2 billion in July, though they fell 6% month-on-month (MoM). With August underway, equities enter a seasonally weak phase lasting through October. In MSCI's latest review, Faysal Bank (-1.93%) was added to the MSCI Frontier Markets Standard Index, raising Pakistan's weight to about 6.3% with 27 constituents. For the coming week, support for the KSE-100 index lies at 143,000-145,000, with resistance at 146,800-147,000; a break below support could align the index with its longer-term seasonal trend, AHL said. Muhammad Hasan Ather of JS Global commented that the KSE-100 index closed a volatile session down by 264 points at 145,383, despite rising earlier to 146,813 amid investor optimism. The gains were driven by selective buying, but the broader market remained under pressure due to falling foreign exchange reserves and a widening trade deficit. The central bank's reserves declined for a third straight week, reflecting external debt repayments, he said. Going forward, persistent macroeconomic concerns may cap the upside potential, with investor focus likely to remain on currency stability and fiscal management signals, Ather added. Overall trading volumes were recorded at 548.1 million shares, compared with the previous day's tally of 712.5 million. The value of shares traded during the day was Rs45.5 billion. Shares of 482 companies were traded. Of these, 151 stocks closed higher, 296 fell and 35 remained unchanged. Pakistan Petroleum was the volume leader with trading in 21.97 million shares, losing Rs1.51 to close at Rs188.23. It was followed by The Bank of Punjab with 21.3 million shares, losing Rs0.23 to close at Rs13.92 and Loads Limited with 20.6 million shares, gaining Rs0.73 to close at Rs16.58. Foreign investors bought shares worth a net Rs33.5 million, the National Clearing Company reported.

PPL contains ransomware attack; core operations remain unaffected

KARACHI: Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has confirmed it successfully contained a ransomware intrusion targeting parts of its IT infrastructure earlier this week, with no impact on core operational systems or sensitive business data. According to a company statement to PSX, the incident was detected on August 6, prompting the immediate activation of PPL's internal cybersecurity protocols. The company's IT and cybersecurity teams, working alongside external experts, swiftly implemented containment measures — including the temporary suspension of certain non-critical IT services — to protect system integrity and limit any potential impact. PPL stated that its multi-layered cybersecurity framework allowed the threat to be rapidly isolated. 'There is no indication of business-critical or sensitive data being compromised,' the company said, adding that all core operations continued uninterrupted. The clarification comes amid inaccurate reports circulating on social media. PPL confirmed it had received a ransomware note from an external actor but stressed that no direct contact was made with the hackers. In compliance with legal requirements, the incident was reported to relevant law enforcement and regulatory authorities, with investigations currently under way in coordination with these agencies. PSX pauses at 145k after seven-week rally

Listen to article The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed modestly lower on Friday as investors opted for profit-taking at the end of a robust week, with the benchmark KSE-100 index settling at 145,383, down 264 points, or 0.18%. The market's consolidation around the 145,000 level came as the State Bank of Pakistan reported a $72 million drop in foreign exchange reserves to $14.23 billion for the week ended Aug 1 – the third consecutive weekly decline, attributed to external debt repayments, said Arif Habib Ltd Deputy Head of Trading Ali Najib. Caution prevailed amid rising government bond yields, fresh trade data and monetary policy signals, prompting selective profit-booking. Heavyweights such as Engro Fertilisers, Lucky Cement, Systems Limited, Mari Petroleum and Hubco collectively shaved 399 points off the index, while renewed buying in Engro Holdings, Fauji Fertiliser Company, Oil and Gas Development Company and MCB Bank added 426 points.
