Police seeking witnesses to superbike-4WD crash near Duta toll plaza
KUALA LUMPUR: Police are seeking witnesses of a crash involving a couple on a high-powered motorcycle that was hit by a four-wheel drive vehicle just before the Duta toll plaza on Saturday (May 10).
Kuala Lumpur traffic investigation and enforcement department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the case is still under investigation and the suspect's remand will be extended by another day.
"The investigation papers will be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor on Tuesday (May 13).
"If a directive to charge is issued, the suspect will be charged the same day," he said on Monday (May 12).
According to media reports, the 2.30pm crash on Saturday left the 53-year-old male motorcyclist with a fractured collarbone and ankle injuries while his 49-year-old wife suffered serious injuries, including a broken ankle, fractured ribs and bleeding in the brain. Both victims are currently being treated at Sungai Buloh Hospital.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect attempted to overtake another motorcycle but hit the couple on the motorcycle instead.
The 32-year-old suspect was arrested and then remanded for two days after lodging a police report at 6.55pm the same day.
Police are investigating the case under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by dangerous driving. The additional charge was under Section 42(1) of the same Act for reckless and dangerous driving. The section provides for imprisonment of up to five years, a minimum fine of RM5,000 or both, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a period of not less than five years, upon conviction. The court granted bail at RM19,000 in two sureties. The accused was also ordered to report weekly to the nearest police station. His driving licences were suspended pending the disposal of the case. Perak prosecution director Muhammad Zaki Abdul Kudos and deputy public prosecutors Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani and Moganaraj Mithra appeared for the prosecution. Truck driver and assistant killed in highway crash
Fatal wreck: The damaged vehicles seen at the crash site at KM81.9 of the of the Ayer Hitam-Batu Pahat southbound stretch along the North-South Expressway. — Bernama BATU PAHAT: A lorry driver and his assistant were killed instantly in a three-vehicle collision along the North-South Expressway near here on Thursday. Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the accident occurred at KM81.9 of the Ayer Hitam-Batu Pahat southbound stretch at about 8.30am. 'A lorry transporting electronic goods crashed into the rear of another lorry carrying wood, which then collided with an oil tanker,' he said in a statement. The impact of the crash caused fatal injuries to the driver and his assistant, who were pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer from the Yong Peng health clinic. They were identified as R. Pubalan, 45, from Sungai Petani, Kedah, and 35-year-old assistant R. Sivasanthiran from Bedong, Kedah. The 37-year-old driver of the wood-laden lorry sustained only minor injuries and was taken to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital. The oil tanker driver, aged 42, was unharmed. The case is being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.

Smuggled items worth RM6.5mil seized by Customs

Department director Nadzri Che Ani said in one of the first seizures, 623,000kg of rice was found in 28 cargo containers at Port Klang, Selangor, on Jan 20 and Feb 6. The rice, believed to be from India, was worth RM5.23mil including duties, Bernama reported. 'The goods were first declared as sodium chloride (salt). The inspection found that each container held 70 sacks of salt and 445 sacks of rice. 'The sacks containing rice were fraudulently hidden at the back and the sacks of salt were placed at the front of the containers near the door,' he told a press conference here yesterday. Nadzri said the goods were likely brought in from India for the local market, adding that the owner of the import company and shipping agent have been detained. Rice is classified as a prohibited item under Item 25, Third Schedule/Part 1 of the Customs (Prohibition on Imports) Order 2023 and the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967. In separate raids on March 7 and April 11 in Johor Baru, the department seized liquor worth RM499,621 including duties. 'In the operation, a total of 8,585 litres of liquor were seized from three multi-purpose vehicles. 'Inspections found that the liquor had a 'Malaysian Duty Not Paid' status and was an abuse of the exemption given in the duty-free area,' he said. On April 5, Nadzri said the department seized 1.1 million cigarettes worth RM822,800 including duties that were stored in an unoccupied warehouse at a durian orchard in Muar, Johor. All three cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
