Walk to stunning Scottish castle that inspired a Disney film named among UK's best
A scenic coastal walk in northeast Scotland has been ranked among the UK's best, thanks to its dramatic cliffs, medieval fortress and striking natural beauty.
The route from Stonehaven Harbour to the iconic Dunnottar Castle was named the third most beautiful walk in the UK in a new study by photo printing company CEWE, which analysed Google reviews to find the country's most-loved walking trails, Express reports.
Each location was assessed on the number of five-star ratings and how often words like 'beautiful', 'stunning', 'amazing', and 'lovely' appeared in the reviews.
The Stonehaven to Dunnottar walk scored highly, with 254 reviewers describing it as beautiful and an overall 4.8-star rating.
The 3.5-mile circular route takes between 90 minutes and two hours to complete and leads walkers south from the town's picturesque harbour to the imposing ruins of Dunnottar Castle.
Along the way, the trail passes through Black Hill, Strathlethan Bay, Dunnicaer Pictish Fort, and Castle Haven.
Stonehaven, a former fishing town with around 11,000 residents, is known not only for its coastal charm but also for its ancient Hogmanay fireballs ceremony, during which locals parade through the streets swinging flaming balls above their heads to banish evil spirits and welcome the new year.
But the real showstopper is Dunnottar Castle itself. A ruined medieval fortress perched dramatically on a rocky headland, it sits about two miles south of Stonehaven and boasts a commanding position on the northeast coast.
While most of the existing buildings date to the 15th and 16th centuries, the site has been fortified since the Early Middle Ages.
Dunnottar has played a central role in Scottish history, most famously as the hiding place of the Honours of Scotland, the nation's crown jewels, during Oliver Cromwell's invasion in the 17th century.
Once the seat of the powerful Earls Marischal and home to the Keith family from the 14th century, the castle declined after the final Earl forfeited his titles for supporting the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. It was later restored in the 20th century and is now open to the public.
The castle has also featured on the silver screen, appearing in the 1990 film adaptation of Hamlet and inspiring Merida's family home in Disney's Brave.
A few miles further south, nature lovers can continue to RSPB Fowlsheugh, a clifftop reserve teeming with life. In spring and summer, the reserve becomes a noisy haven for more than 130,000 breeding seabirds, including puffins, kittiwakes and razorbills.

Topping CEWE's list of beautiful walks was Mount Stewart in Northern Ireland, a grand 19th-century estate nestled on the shores of Strangford Lough in County Down.
The estate features landscaped gardens, a stately mansion with an impressive art collection, and 10 miles of trails winding through farmland and woodland. It received 259 'beautiful' mentions and a 4.7-star average rating.
Powis Castle and Garden in Welshpool, Wales, took second place. Originally built as a fortress in the 13th century, the castle boasts sweeping views across the Severn Valley and is surrounded by elegant gardens.
It earned 255 'beautiful' reviews and also maintained a 4.7-star rating.

One picturesque island beach has been crowned the country's cleanest. Scotland's best beach with "zero litter" has been named for summer. It appeared on a UK-wide list of the nation's top clean beaches. With the high temperatures that swept across the country over for the time being, Scots will be counting down the days until the sun comes back out. While heading to the beach is classic sunny day activity, Scotland's beaches are so beautiful that they look picturesque even in wet and grey weather. New data from plastic waste experts at has revealed the UK's 15 least littered beaches. The experts looked at online reviews of beaches across the nation and singled out bays where no visitors mentioned litter. The only Scottish beach to appear on list is Luskentyre on the Isle of Harris. The bay also placed at number four on the experts' overall list. According to there are 1,149 online reviews of Luskentyre. Zero of these reviews include the word ' litter '. Luskentyre Beach, also known as Luskentyre Sands, is situated along the west coast of South Harris in the Outer Hebrides. It is among the largest and most scenic bays on the island. The beach is award-winning, previously being named among the best bays in the UK and Europe by Tripadvisor. However, owing to its remote location, Luskentyre is usually quiet despite its acclaim. The beach is renowned for its miles of pristine sands and vibrant turquoise water. It also offers awe-inspiring views out over to the island of Taransay, which is where the iconic BBC series Castaway was filmed. Elsewhere, topping the experts' list as the best zero-litter beach in the UK is Southwold Pier in Suffolk. The English beach has received 2,641 reviews online, none of which mention litter. Following behind in second and third place are Sandsend Beach in North Yorkshire and Horsey Beach in Norfolk, with 1,349 and 1,259 reviews respectively. Rounding out the top five is Porthcurno Beach in Cornwall in fifth place, which has 694 online reviews. Plastic waste expert at Graham Matthews commented: "Litter on the UK's beaches turns our natural beauty spots into an eyesore and poses a huge environmental threat to marine life. Each year, as the weather heats up, we see a sharp rise in people flocking to the seaside, but sadly, many don't clean up after themselves. "It's common to find food packaging, disposable BBQs, and even human and animal waste scattered across our shores. All this unsightly litter ruins the enjoyment of our beaches, but it also threatens local wildlife. "Plastic is a particularly major hazard as it takes so long to break down naturally. Initially, this litter can endanger wildlife, entangle animals or be ingested. However, over time, plastic breaks down into smaller particles known as microplastics that find their way into water, sea life, and even our food chain." Matthews also shared how day-trippers can help keep Scotland's beaches clean. The expert revealed what people can do to ensure the nation's bays are not flooded with litter. Matthews added: "Beachgoers must take responsibility for the impact of their visit. You should always bin any litter or take it home with you if this isn't possible. "Remember to bring a bag with you to collect any rubbish once you've finished your visit. Beyond this, it's important to reduce your impact further. We did this last year, and it was brilliant – the kids loved it, and it's perfect if you're not a fan of crowded pools. Splash parks are another fantastic option – often free or inexpensive, they're great for outdoor water fun without the cost of entry fees. Cinema and bowling deals Take advantage of early morning cinema screenings like Mini Mornings, offered by Cineworld, Vue, and other cinema chains. These sessions are heavily discounted and perfect for a family outing without spending loads. They may be called different things depending on the cinema, but they're all great value. Always check online for vouchers or discounts before booking – many venues offer deals that can make a big difference to the cost of a family trip. Kids Pass is a fantastic option – it's great for discounts on theme parks, cinemas, and other activities. Kellogg's also regularly runs promotions for free or discounted days out, and I've used their vouchers loads of times in the past. Tesco Clubcard points are another lifesaver – they can get you brilliant deals for places like Legoland, Alton Towers, and other big attractions. I never go to theme parks without a deal; whether it's two-for-one offers or discounts where kids go free, there are always vouchers if you keep an eye out. I've found that Tesco Clubcard points, in particular, are brilliant for these kinds of trips. That said, memberships can be a good idea too, but only if you'll use them enough to make them worthwhile. For instance, if it costs £50 per visit and you know you'll go three times a year, then a membership might save you money. But if you're not going to use it regularly, it's just not worth it. You've got to weigh up how far you live, how often you'll go, and whether perks like discounts on food and drink will actually benefit you. I personally always bring my own food and drink, so those extras don't save me much. Check with your energy provider Another great tip is to check if your energy provider offers perks. For example, Octopus Energy has deals on activities, and even free passes for things like cinema tickets. There are also deals like Meerkat Movies, which can save you a lot. For quieter days at home, free trial subscriptions can be a lifesaver. Services like Prime Movies often offer free trials, and you can use them during the holidays for movie nights with the kids. Just make sure you set a reminder to cancel before the trial ends to avoid being charged. Having a party cupboard When it comes to buying toys for my kids or gifts for others, I've always been smart about finding bargains. I've never been shy about buying second-hand toys – charity shops, boot sales, and school fairs are absolute goldmines. My daughter Bronte genuinely thinks the toy shop is the charity shop or Poundland, and she couldn't care less. Kids don't mind about fancy packaging or where things come from – they just love the excitement of having something 'new' to play with. I shared it with friends, and loads of people started buying it to put away for Christmas. It's such a good feeling to be prepared and save money at the same time. I also stick to a budget of around £10 per present. If I can grab a deal like two toys for £10 that would normally cost £17 each, then the child is still getting a really nice gift, but I'm not overspending. For older kids, I'll often just put money in a card – it's practical and lets them save for something they really want. Being savvy with toys and gifts has saved me so much over the years, and it's a great way to always have something ready without breaking the bank. Saving and making money There are so many clever ways to save money when it comes to driving and parking. For starters, to maximise your car's mileage, try only half-filling your fuel tank each time. A full tank adds extra weight, which causes your car to burn more fuel. Renting out your parking space could earn you around £50 a month You can also save by removing roof racks when they're not in use and clearing out your boot to avoid driving around with unnecessary weight. These small changes can make a big difference to your fuel efficiency over time. If you've got a parking space or driveway you're not using, you could easily turn it into a little extra cash. In areas where parking is expensive and hard to find, commuters or train travellers are often on the lookout for more affordable options. Renting out your space could earn you around £50 a month, and apps like JustPark make it really simple to get started. Plus, having an extra car parked on your drive can even act as a burglar deterrent. On the flip side, if you regularly drive to work or a specific destination, it's worth exploring whether you can rent a parking space instead of paying extortionate daily fees.
