Meltdowns and stares: What I learnt taking kids on a luxury cruise

It's December 25 in Livorno and, like our fellow passengers in Amphora – the a la carte restaurant onboard Windstar Cruises' Star Legend – our family of four is settling in for a fancy Christmas dinner. Dressed in our festive finest, my husband and I sip champagne while our nine- and seven-year-old daughters draw as we wait for our starters to be served. So far, so good on our decision to swap Christmas at home in France for a small-ship Mediterranean cruise. We're on day three of our seven-night sailing from Rome to Barcelona and we have all adapted to the luxuries of life onboard with alarming speed. I wish I could ask Father Christmas for this evermore.
That is, until my youngest takes offence when I stop her from taking her cardigan off. In protest, she slams her forehead into her fine-china place setting in front of her, before starting to wail at her usual high volume. The commotion stops conversations around us. A crew member swiftly comes to her side, removing the tableware from her reach.
I don't need to look up to see the knowing glances passing between people nearby. My smugness has evaporated, replaced by a blush that quickly deepens: Windstar's minimum age is eight years old, and we've been granted an exception to bring her on the cruise. She is, right now, demonstrating exactly why that limit has been set.
While few cruise lines explicitly ban children (Viking and Virgin Voyages being the most notable examples), not all of them offer Disney and Royal Caribbean-style bells and whistles. At the smaller end of the cruise ship scale, Windstar and its like among other premium and luxury lines welcome younger guests (the age limit varies per line) but they don't have any dedicated kids programming as such.

Dua Lipa strips down to skimpy bikini for yoga session on paddleboard during Ibiza holiday

Dua Lipa was levitating as she expertly turned her paddleboard into a yoga mat during a sunny vacation in Ibiza. Despite being on holiday, the singer was still working on her fitness, enjoying a yoga session in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. There was no need for activewear, with the 29-year-old rocking a layered burgundy and blue skimpy bikini as she impressively performed the downward dog pose on her paddleboard, among other signature yoga poses including the dolphin, sphinx and a supported handstand. Stretching and effortlessly striking numerous poses, Lipa worked on her fitness as she was joined by her actor fiance, Callum Turner, and a bunch of their friends who frolicked nearby on their own paddleboards. Once back on-board their luxury yacht, the One Kiss singer grabbed the handheld shower and rinsed herself off. The holiday comes one week before her 30th birthday, but it's never too early to celebrate the milestone event. The singer posted some photos on Instagram this week of her adventures on her 'favourite island', including some snaps of herself wearing a white sequin dress with a cheeky butt cutout. 'Early birthday celebrations on my favourite island with my favourite people wearing the most gorgeous dress Simon made for me,' she captioned the carousel. 'I can't bloody wait for 30!!!!' Over the weekend, Lipa also shared another Instagram slide show, featuring photos from her vacation. 'Resting meeee bones before I carry on dancing into my 30s!!!!!!' she captioned the post. But it seems there's really no rest for the wicked, with her bones getting a proper workout thanks to her impromptu yoga session. In a recent interview with British Vogue, Lipa said that she was counting down the days until her big birthday as she feels 'invincible' at this stage in her life. 'I turn 30 in August, and I've been thinking about it a lot, because your 20s are just so tumultuous in the way you think about yourself and your body,' she told the magazine in June. 'I don't know, now I feel like I've come to a place – I've become better at taking care of myself and working out and dancing. 'I feel the most confident I've ever felt. I feel very empowered and strong in my body. I feel good when I'm sharing my energy with people on stage. There's just so much of that that makes me really proud of my body and the way it holds me.'

Hollywood megastar flaunts ripped abs on Ibiza holiday

After nearly four decades in showbiz, Matt Damon is looking as ripped as ever. The 54-year-old Hollywood actor is enjoying a holiday in Ibiza, Spain, for Australian star Chris Hemsworth's 42nd birthday. The Jason Bourne star was photographed soaking up the sun on a yacht alongside his wife Luciana Barroso, flaunting his buff figure in a pair of navy swim shorts. While Damon has usually kept in solid shape, fulfilling a string of action roles over the years, he recently got particularly shredded for director Christopher Nolan's upcoming film The Odyssey, which shot in Italy earlier this year. The action fantasy feature is brimming with a cohort of A-listers, including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron. The movie follows Odysseus (Damon), king of Ithaca, returning home under perilous circumstances following the Trojan War. It's slated for a July 2026 release. In the meantime, Damon has been enjoying time off, joined by the Hemsworth brothers, Chris, Liam and Luke, as well as New Zealand director Taika Waititi and pop star wife Rita Ora for some fun on the Spanish island. Absent from the star-studded squad was Chris' wife, Elsa Pataky, who was spotted this week grocery shopping in Byron Bay near the couple's beachside mansion. Liam paid birthday tribute to his brother on Instagram earlier this week, sharing a photo of all three brothers together on the boat trip with the message: 'Happy birthday brother Chris! Thanks for always being such a wonderful legend. Never change. I hope I have abs like you when I grow up. Love you.' Liam's long-term girlfriend Gabriella Brooks was also spotted in Ibiza appearing to be flashing a new ring on her engagement finger. The Hunger Games actor began dating Brooks sometime in late 2019, shortly after Hemsworth's marriage breakdown with US pop star Miley Cyrus. Chris has been spending much of his time in the UK of late, with production on Marvel's hugely anticipated Avengers film currently underway. He's set to reprise his role of Thor, which he debuted in 2011, alongside fellow MCU great Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers: Doomsday, which hits cinemas next year.

Wonder lost: The end of the line for Disney cruises in Australia

This season's Disney Magic at Sea cruises will be the last Down Under, it has been confirmed. There had been recent speculation that Disney Wonder would not return to its Australian base after its third season, ending in February 2026. In a statement on Monday, the company says: 'While the Disney Wonder will not return to Australia and New Zealand for the 2026-2027 season, Disney Cruise Line is always looking at destinations to explore with our guests and sailings from Australia and New Zealand remain on our list of future considerations.' Disney did not say what the reasons were behind the decision, other than it was repositioning the ship 'to another part of the world after its upcoming 2025-2026 season in Australia and New Zealand'. It had recently brought in a new round of heavily discounted fares of 50 per cent for third and fourth passengers on new and existing bookings for its upcoming local season, promising more whimsical family entertainment with character appearances on board. Disney is the third cruise line to pull out of Australian ports, after Cunard at the end of last season and Virgin Voyages a year earlier. Costs and regulation for cruise lines operating from Australia have been a major issue in recent years, sparking efforts by the industry's peak body CLIA to relieve pressure points for the $8.4 billion industry. Disney goes on to say of its Asia-Pacific strategy: 'The Disney Adventure's maiden sailing from Singapore in December 2025 marks the start of a magical new chapter for Disney Cruise Line.' The maiden voyage of Disney Adventure on December 15, 2025, marks the line's first foray into Asia. It will be the line's, and indeed one of the world's biggest ships at 208,000GT and passenger capacity of about 6700, plus crew. The ship will sail primarily three to four-night voyages and a limited number of five-night cruises from Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore, making it an accessible option for West Australian travellers. Singapore remains a top tourism destination for West Australians. Adventure will sail from Singapore for at least five years as part of a collaboration with the Singapore Tourism Board.
