Amid Kannada Language Row, Kamal Haasan Reacts To Bengaluru Stampede: 'Heart-Wrenching Tragedy'

Last Updated: Kamal Haasan mourned the Bengaluru stampede victims amid his film's release row, saying his 'heart reaches out' to affected families. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan has expressed grief over the tragic stampede near Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and injured 33 others. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, as thousands gathered for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory celebrations. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Kamal wrote, 'Heart wrenching tragedy in Bangalore. Deeply distressed and my heart reaches out to the families of the victims in this moment of grief. May the injured recover soon." Heart wrenching tragedy in Bangalore. Deeply distressed and my heart reaches out to the families of the victims in this moment of grief. May the injured recover soon.— Kamal Haasan (@ikamalhaasan) June 4, 2025 Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed the stampede occurred due to an overwhelming crowd at the stadium, where RCB players were to be felicitated following their IPL 2025 win. He described it as an 'unexpected tragedy" and announced an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased, along with a magisterial inquiry. The RCB team, including star player Virat Kohli, had earlier visited Vidhana Soudha to meet CM Siddaramaiah before proceeding to the stadium for the public celebrations. Eyewitnesses noted that fans began scaling walls and fences, leading to the chaos that triggered the stampede. Kamal Haasan's reaction came amid an ongoing controversy over his recent comments on the Kannada language. The veteran actor had earlier remarked that Kannada originated from Tamil, a statement that triggered backlash from several Kannada groups. Though he clarified that his remarks were meant to express affection for the late Kannada icon Dr Rajkumar and his family, demands for an apology persisted. Speaking to the media ahead of the pan-India release of his upcoming film Thug Life, Haasan refrained from re-addressing the language row. He added, 'I will speak at length later, as a Tamil who wants to speak a lot." The film is scheduled for release across India and globally on Friday, except in Karnataka. Haasan had sought court protection for the film's release in the state, but later confirmed that Thug Life would not be released in Karnataka following observations from the Karnataka High Court. Sources close to him said, 'There can be no demand for an apology in a gunpoint situation," referring to alleged pressure from fringe groups. First Published: June 05, 2025, 00:44 IST

Kannada Actress's Family Challenges Prolonged Custody In Karnataka High Court Despite Court-Approved Release

The mother of Kannada film actress Ranya Rao has approached the Karnataka High Court through a habeas corpus petition, questioning the legal basis for her daughter's ongoing imprisonment in a major gold trafficking case. Despite receiving court approval for release, the actress remains behind bars due to overlapping legal proceedings. Rao received authorization for release on May 20 from the Special Court for Economic Offences, but her freedom has been blocked by additional charges filed under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 (Cofeposa). This separate legal framework allows authorities to maintain custody of individuals suspected of smuggling activities that threaten foreign exchange conservation. The actress was apprehended at Bengaluru airport on March 3 following allegations of attempting to transport 14.8 kilograms of gold from Dubai. According to official reports, a comprehensive physical examination revealed gold bars strategically hidden around her body using medical bandages and tissues, particularly around her waist and leg areas. Investigators also discovered additional gold pieces concealed within her footwear and clothing pockets. The confiscated precious metal, confirmed to be 24-carat quality, carried an estimated value exceeding Rs 12.56 crore. Legal proceedings have been initiated against Rao under both the Customs Act and the Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act. During recent court proceedings, Additional Solicitor General Aravind Kamath informed the court that formal objections had been submitted regarding the case. The court has scheduled the next hearing for June 18. The Special Court for Economic Offences had granted release to both Rao and co-accused Tarun Kondaru Raju last month, requiring each to provide two guarantors and post a Rs 2 lakh security bond. The release conditions included restrictions on international travel and prohibitions against repeating similar offenses. Justice Vishwanath C Gowdar approved the release after the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence failed to file charges within the required timeframe. However, the Cofeposa legislation enables authorities to maintain preventive detention for individuals suspected of engaging in smuggling operations or activities that could harm foreign exchange stability, effectively overriding the earlier bail decision. This legal mechanism has resulted in Rao's continued incarceration despite the court's initial approval for her release.

Opposition must unite to dismantle DMK government: Nainar Nagendran

All Opposition parties in the State, including actor Vijay's party, must come together to remove the DMK government, citing deteriorating law and order, rising drug use among students, and financial burdens on citizens, said Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran. 'Property tax rates and electricity charges have become unbearable. All Opposition parties must unite to dislodge the DMK government,' he said while meeting with the media persons here on Wednesday. Mr. Nagendran also clarified that the BJP does not interfere in the internal affairs of any political party. Responding to allegations of BJP involvement in the recent internal rift within the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), he said, 'Not just the PMK, the BJP will not intervene in the internal matters of any party.' On the status of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu, he said both O. Panneerselvam and T.T.V. Dhinakaran are already part of the alliance. 'I believe all NDA constituents will work together with former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who is also part of the alliance,' he said. On the ongoing sexual harassment case involving a student of Anna University, Mr. Nagendran said, 'The public is still asking, 'Who is that sir?' The police have not conducted a proper investigation. While I will not comment on the court's verdict, the Chief Minister must clarify the issue and respond to public concerns.' When asked about Congress State president K. Selvaperunthagai's statement suggesting that PMK and DMDK should join the DMK-led alliance, Mr. Nagendran dismissed it as a personal opinion. 'There are still 10 months left for the elections. We will consider talks regarding PMK and DMDK joining the NDA,' he said. On actor Kamal Haasan's recent remarks about the origin of the Kannada language, Mr. Nagendran said, 'If he had spoken only about Tamil, everyone would have supported him. But linking it to other languages is unacceptable.' He also announced that around five lakh devotees are expected to attend the Murugan Devotees' Conference in Madurai on June 22. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Madurai on June 8 to meet BJP functionaries, he added.
