Satwiksairaj-Chirag's absence leaves India with uphill task
PETALING JAYA: India have been dealt a huge blow ahead of the Sudirman Cup after top men's doubles shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty withdrew from the team meet due to illness.
Former world No. 1 pair Satwiksairaj-Chirag have struggled with injuries since the Paris Olympics last August and their withdrawal from the team meet is yet another setback for them.
The duo, who are currently ranked No. 11, played an important role in helping India clinch a historic Thomas Cup crown in 2022 and their absence is a blow to their team's chances of progressing far in the Sudirman Cup which starts on Sunday in Xiamen, China.
In Satwiksairaj-Chirag's absence, India only have inexperienced pair A. Hariharan-R. Ruban Kumar in the men's doubles as the Badminton Association of India (BAI) have opted against naming a replacement.

The talismanic pair's withdrawal leaves India facing an uphill task to survive Group D which also includes Indonesia, Denmark and England.
Only the top two teams will progress to the last eight.
Earlier, India also lost the services of top women's doubles pair Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand who pulled out due to injury.
Youngsters Shruthi Mishra-Priya Konjengbam face a tough battle to fill the void left behind by world No. 10 Treesa-Gayatri.
India will be relying heavily on experienced stars Lakshya Sen, H. S. Prannoy (men's singles) and P. V. Sindhu (women's singles) for the points.
World No. 17 mixed doubles pair Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto will also be hoping to pull off a few upsets.
India were knocked out of the group stage in the last three editions (2019, 2021 and 2023) and last made it into the quarter-finals in 2017 where they lost to China.

Tze Yong's injury an issue for Jonassen in plan to assemble strong Thomas Cup squad
PETALING JAYA: National singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen is fully aware that the injury to his charge, Ng Tze Yong, could disrupt his plans to assemble the strongest line-up for the 2026 Thomas Cup. Although the tournament in Horsens, Denmark, is still about a year away, scheduled for April or May, Jonassen knows time is running short to build a formidable men's singles squad capable of mounting a strong challenge at the prestigious team competition. What makes the task even more daunting is his own admission that it would take a near miracle for any up-and-coming player to impress him enough to earn a spot in the Thomas Cup squad. At present, the men's singles squad comprise just five players, among them Leong Jun Hao, Justin Hoh, Eogene Ewe and young talent Kong Zhou Swin, who was recently promoted to the senior team. As such, Jonassen and the singles coaching team are focused on sharpening the skills of these existing players to ensure they are able to compete with the top names in the sport. 'Now, the injury to Tze Yong obviously affects things a little, but we'll see. Overall, I'm working towards a goal where we can produce a line-up that's capable of challenging the best. 'Of course, purely based on world rankings, we're not at the level of the top nations. They are ranked much higher, and unless we do something spectacular over the next eight to 10 months, we won't surpass them in the rankings. 'With less than 12 months to go before this major championship, I would be very surprised if a junior player could make the kind of progress needed to perform at that level. So we'll be coming in as underdogs. But for me, it's about being able to deliver a strong performance, and potentially that crucial win, on the day it matters most,' said Jonassen. At the same time, Jonassen is not ready to disclose the details of Tze Yong's injury, despite rumours that the 25-year-old suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during his first-round match against Angus Ng Ka Long at the Malaysian Masters two weeks ago. It is a tough situation for Tze Yong, who only made his return in April after a year-long break due to a back injury. The injury sustained by Tze Yong has forced him to withdraw from last week's Singapore Open and this week's Indonesian Open.

The global body, which will oversee boxing competitions in the 2028 Olympics after being granted provisional recognition by the International Olympic Committee, made the announcement last week, less than a year after Khelif won gold in Paris amid a gender-eligibility row. The announcement specifically said the body had sent a letter to the Algerian Boxing Federation saying Khelif "may not participate in the female category" of any World Boxing event until she undergoes the test. However, a source said World Boxing president Boris van der Vorst had personally written to Algerian Boxing Federation president Abdelkader Abbas to apologise for including Khelif's name. Van der Vorst said World Boxing should have made a greater effort to protect Khelif's privacy. In last week's announcement, World Boxing said all athletes over the age of 18 will have to undertake a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) genetic test, which can be conducted by a nasal or mouth swab, saliva or blood. Khelif and the Algerian Boxing Federation could not be immediately reached for comment. The country's federation joined World Boxing in September, one of more than 100 national federations that have joined the body since it was established in 2023.
