Two-time Wimbledon champion retiring to ‘totally different life' after horror knife attack left irreversible damage
PETRA KVITOVA is set to retire after the US Open... nine years on from the horror knife attack that left her career hanging in the balance. Two-time former Wimbledon champion Kvitova, 35, has been a popular figure on the WTA Tour for more than a decade. 3 Petra Kvitova is set to call time on her brilliant career Credit: Getty 3 Kvotova, 35, was shockingly attacked in her own home in December 2016 Credit: AP:Associated Press In December 2016, Kvitova was shockingly attacked in her own home by a man purporting to be a utility worker. The Czech star suffered a deep laceration in her left hand and required urgent, career-saving surgery. Five months of intense rehabilitation followed, before Kvitova was able to launch the start of what she calls her "second career" at the French Open in 2017. The big-hitting lefty has since enjoyed a "second career" that most players would envy. She reached the Australian Open final in 2019, narrowly losing in three sets to an inspired Naomi Osaka, before battling to the semis at the 2020 French Open. Kvitova has won an incredible 31 career titles, including 12 since her traumatic knife attack. In 2024 she took a break from the rigours of life on tour to have her first child, with son Petr born in July of last year. The inspirational star returned to action earlier this year, but is now to call time on her brilliant career at the US Open. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Reflecting on her journey back to the top of the sport ahead of her final tournament, Kvitova told The Guardian: "I knew I was a big fighter on the court but at that time I realised how I am an even bigger fighter in a totally different version of myself. "That was great, even though it was very tough to play tennis. I cried on the court, I had really bad flashbacks, I was having nightmares. Two-time champion Petra Kvitova, 35, bursts into tears after ending Wimbledon career in worst possible way "So it really wasn't easy. It took a while, but it's all good now. There was a big question mark, can I play tennis or not? "And I could. It was my second career. It was amazing." On her motivations for hanging up her racquet, Kvitova added: "I'm totally ready. I'm not regretting anything. "I still love tennis but everything else, waiting for the practices, waiting for the car, waiting for a match, it's just tiring. "And having a son, it's a totally different life. I just want to spend more time with him as well." New York will next week have a chance to wave goodbye to truly one of the great players of the last decade, and arguably the most inspirational.

I'm trolled for leaving my husband after he ended up in a wheelchair – he's in a care home while I'm remarried with kids
Read on to see how Kris deals with the haters LOVE WINS I'm trolled for leaving my husband after he ended up in a wheelchair – he's in a care home while I'm remarried with kids KRIS Armstrong was one of the lucky ones, after finding her best friend and husband at the age of 16. But her life soon turned upside down at the age of 23, when she got a phone call on her way to work. 3 Kris Armstrong with her first husband Brandon Credit: tiktok/@followmetothemouse 3 Kris decided to divorce Brandon after a car accident left him with PTA Credit: tiktok/@followmetothemouse Advertisement Her husband, Brandon Smith, had been involved in a car accident and by the time she arrived at the hospital, he was already in a coma. When he woke up two months later, the Brandon she knew was gone. Brandon woke up with post-traumatic amnesia and now needed constant care. The pair, from Texas, had both planned to start a family after getting married at the age of 22, but those plans were now unachievable. Advertisement "His memory, which really he's never fully gotten out like 10 seconds long. This is when it really became clear that I went from being a wife to a caregiver," Kris told CBS. "When someone has a severe traumatic brain injury in a big way, you lose that person, but you gain somebody new," she said. "And it took me a long time to realise that." Kris decided to quit her job and become Brandon's full time carer, even changing jobs to become a speech pathologist to help them communicate. Advertisement But after years of trying, it was clear that the severity of Brandon's injuries meant their relationship had changed and Kris filed for divorce to become his legal guardian instead. "I had made vows that I would be with him in sickness and health, and I took that very seriously," Armstrong said. Heartbreaking tributes to Brit woman, 43, killed in jet ski crash at Costa Del Sol resort "I didn't stay married to him, but I wanted to take care of him." Kris took care of all of his appointments, his health insurance and financial matters and vowed to be there for the rest of their lives. In a TikTok clip, Kris revealed that she soon 'drowned' as she tried to keep up with Brandon's care needs. Advertisement Despite having a huge support group, it became too much and Kris had to make the painful decision to place Brandon into a care home. Kris was by his side the whole time, even in 2014, when Kris met her now-husband James Armstrong, she kept her promise. She told James about the situation and he was fully onboard with having Brandon in their lives as well. When the pair first met, Brandon even asked James if they could have a beer together, helping to solidify their bond. 3 Kris' second husband James is also there for Brandon Credit: tiktok/@followmetothemouse Advertisement FAMILY FOR LIFE Now, Kris and James are married with small kids, and also look after Brandon and keep him included in the family. A recent TikTok video saw Kris pick up Brandon so he could celebrate her 41st birthday with them. In the clip, Kris takes Brandon out to lunch, assisting him with eating and drinking, and later shares cake with him back at home. At one moment in the video, Kris shares a sweet clip of James, who can be seen hugging Brandon and giving him a kiss on the forehead. "Thanks for hanging out with me on my birthday," Kris says to Brandon, who responds in kind by mouthing "I love you" back. Advertisement But despite Kris' determination to keep Brandon in her life over the last 16 years since his accident, trolls cruelly slam her for divorcing him in the first place. One wrote: "She divorced him when he got into the accident. Let's not pretend she's a saint please. He has to watch her with her new husband and children after she abandoned their marriage because it didn't suit her." Another penned: "Through sickness and health… but you divorced him and put him in a home." "He's looking at you like he wants you everyday. So sad when people leave their spouse when illness hits," commented a third. In the past, Kris and Brandon have addressed the negative comments, saying they'd rather share it and help others in similar situations than keep it bottled up. Advertisement Kris wrote: "We can choose to bottle up what we go through in fear of being judged but then we don't get the beautiful benefit of community."

‘F***, I'm sorry' – Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula miss out on $1m US Open jackpot after astonishing tie-break collapse
JACK DRAPER and Jessica Pegula missed out on a shot at the $1million jackpot after narrowly losing in the US Open mixed doubles semi-finals. The British-American duo teamed up late on for the event, after Draper's previous partners Zheng Qinwen and Paula Badosa were both forced to withdraw due to injury. 3 Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula were gutted to lose Credit: Getty 3 Draper and Pegula were a last minute team after the Brit's previous partners pulled out Credit: Getty Draper and Pegula stormed through the first two rounds of the controversially revamped event - sweeping past Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu, then Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva. Things started brightly last night, as they grabbed the first set 5-3 against Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud. Swiatek and Ruud came roaring back, however, winning the second set 5-3 to set up a dramatic match tiebreak to 10. Draper and Pegula raced to an 8-4 lead, with the former playing brilliantly and the latter an extremely accomplished doubles player. READ MORE ON JACK DRAPER NO LOVE LOST Fans say Raducanu and Draper have 'ex vibes' after frosty moment near Alcaraz But incredibly their lead soon evaporated, with the scratch pair losing six points in a row to crash out of the tournament. On match point Pegula opted to volley a Swiatek forehand, setting up an easy winner for the Pole when Draper may have had a more presentable shot had she left the ball. As Pegula and Draper sat down following the epic match, both looked extremely dejected. Pegula appeared to tell her partner: "F***, I'm sorry." BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Draper, 23, did not allow Pegula to blame herself, and instead seemed to try and gee her up - having admitted that he had barely spoken to her prior to this week. The Brit had previously been chided by his partner for describing the tournament as an "exhibition" - with the USTA having been at pains to stress that it remains a proper Grand Slam event. Jack Draper told off by partner after comment following US Open win over Raducanu and Alcaraz Following defeat, Draper clarified: "I think yesterday there was times where it felt a little bit more that way from our opponents. "Whereas tonight we were in the changing rooms, you're seeing Iga and Casper, they're fully dialled in. It was intense. We both wanted to win." Pegula then weighed in: "You can't go out there at 7pm on Ashe knowing you could play the final, and feel like you're just out there." Draper was returning to action for the first time since losing in round two of Wimbledon, having since battled injury. 'I LOVED IT' Addressing Pegula after the match, the British No1 said: "I enjoyed the competition. I loved it, playing alongside Jessica. I wasn't expecting probably to have as good of a time as I did. "Honestly, I thought we played great. Tonight was a tough match. They were on good form. But just overall a really positive experience. Loved playing with you. Hope to do it again." Swiatek and Ruud went on to face defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori in the final. Errani and Vavassori went into the showpiece fully pumped up, having been the only specialist doubles team admitted into the tournament. The Italians went on to triumph 6-3 5-7 10-6 - successfully defending their crown in front of a full house on Arthur Ashe Stadium. After the final, 38-year-old Errani pointedly said: "I think this one is also for all the doubles players that couldn't play this tournament. I think this one is also for them." While Vavassori added: "It was an amazing atmosphere, so I have to say thanks to the organisation, to [tournament director] Stacey [Allaster], to Eric [Butorac] also for giving us the opportunity to play. "I have to say that we showed today that doubles is a great product… "I think it was amazing to play on this court with so many people and I have to say thanks from the bottom of my heart for the atmosphere."
