Israel delivers 120 aid trucks to Gaza on first day of pause

The Sun28-07-2025
JERUSALEM: Israel announced that over 120 truckloads of food aid were distributed in Gaza on the first day of a temporary pause in fighting.
The aid was delivered by the UN and international agencies as part of a coordinated effort to address severe shortages in the war-torn territory.
On Sunday, Israel declared a 'tactical pause' in military operations in parts of Gaza and opened secure routes for humanitarian aid.
The Israeli defence ministry body COGAT stated, 'Over 120 trucks were collected and distributed yesterday by the UN and international organisations.'
COGAT added that an additional 180 trucks had entered Gaza and were awaiting collection, with hundreds more still queued for UN pickup.
Meanwhile, Israel, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates conducted parachute air drops to supplement ground deliveries.
Before the conflict, Gaza required around 500 trucks daily to sustain its population of over two million.
Recent weeks have seen UN agencies warn of famine-like conditions as aid supplies dwindle, prompting international calls for a ceasefire to facilitate large-scale relief efforts.
Israel denies accusations of using hunger as a weapon of war, instead blaming aid agencies for delays in distribution.
'More consistent collection and distribution by UN agencies and international organisations equals more aid reaching those who need it most in Gaza,' COGAT said. – AFP

Turkmen president proposes global hydrogen energy program at UN conference

ASHGABAT, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has proposed launching a global program for the transition to hydrogen energy covering the period 2030-2040. Speaking at the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3) on Tuesday, Berdimuhamedov suggested beginning discussions in 2026 on developing the program under the UN framework. He emphasized Turkmenistan's consistent support for expanding practical cooperation in renewable energy and expressed the country's readiness to contribute to hydrogen energy development. Clear joint plans and coordinated mechanisms are needed to achieve this, he noted. Berdimuhamedov also stressed that Turkmenistan operates in the international energy space in full accordance with UN-adopted documents and advocates for strict adherence to international environmental standards and climate agreements. The LLDC3 is being held from Aug. 5 to 8 in Turkmenistan's National Tourist Zone of Awaza. The event has drawn heads of state and government, senior officials from over 100 countries, and representatives of around 50 international organizations and more than 20 major companies.

Stanford University axes 363 jobs amid Trump's education funding cuts

LOS ANGELES, United States: Stanford University plans to axe hundreds of staff due to funding cuts for higher education under President Donald Trump, the latest mass layoff at an elite US college. The plan announced in late July, which AFP confirmed Wednesday by consulting official documents, follows similar firings at Harvard, Columbia and Johns Hopkins – all of which have been targeted in the White House's crackdown on top universities. Trump has wielded federal funds as a negotiating tool for universities that he says are too liberal, insisting that they submit to curriculum, enrollment and other changes. The Republican's administration has also decreased or placed holds on spending for university research as part of wider budget cuts since taking office in January. Stanford, located just south of San Francisco with some 18,000 staff, said it was making a US$140 million reduction in the general funds budget for the upcoming year. "This is the product of a challenging fiscal environment shaped in large part by federal policy changes affecting higher education," Stanford president Jon Levin and provost Jenny Martinez said in a joint statement. They added that the job cuts were "difficult actions that affect valued colleagues and friends who have made important contributions to Stanford." A filing by Stanford with the California state government said 363 employees would be impacted by the layoffs.--AFP

Malaysia condemns Israeli Zionist regime's plan to take over Gaza

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has condemned in no uncertain terms the Israeli Zionist regime's latest decision to launch a full military takeover of Gaza. Malaysia also calls on all nations to unequivocally reject Israel's apartheid policies. The Foreign Ministry said this calculated and unconscionable move signals a clear intention by the regime to permanently occupy Palestinian lands, in flagrant violation of international law and flouting the principles of basic human rights and justice. "After 22 months of relentless bombings, siege, and the forced displacement of over 90 per cent of Gaza's population, the move is intended to put an end to the two-state solution. "If Israel is allowed to continue, its actions will put an end to the peace process and deny the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination," the ministry said in a statement. Malaysia also said immediate and concrete actions must be taken towards recognising the state of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. "Malaysia also calls on all nations to secure a permanent ceasefire, the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, immediately end all blockade of humanitarian access, and ensure unimpeded access to humanitarian aid and the full entry of the State of Palestine as a member of the United Nations," the statement read. Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a Facebook post said the country's commitment to defending the rights of the Palestinian people remains firm, not only through strong statements on the international stage, but also by working closely with regional and global leaders.
