Silchar: Law enforcement agencies in Assam's Barak Valley are ramping up efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking, a growing concern in the region known as a key corridor in the narcotics trade, reports BB Goswami.
Cachar additional SP (Crime) Rajat Kumar Pal, speaking at an awareness programme at Silchar Press Club on Thursday, said police are actively working to neutralise trafficking networks. "We are committed to intensifying surveillance, strengthening border controls, and fostering community vigilance," Pal said.
The programme, organised by the PIB, Assam, under the Union ministry of information and broadcasting, marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh govt is set to include a chapter on the ills of drug use in the school curriculum. The announcement was made by chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking Thursday. He said, "The vision of a prosperous country can only be realised by channelling the energy of the youth in the right direction." Reiterating his govt's zero-tolerance policy towards the use and trafficking of drugs, Sukhu said, "None, even govt employees, found involved in drug trafficking will be spared. There is no place for drugs in Devbhoomi." He called on the youth of the state to join the fight against drugs, help themselves and others as well to come out of it. The state govt remains committed to cracking down on drug networks and taking stern action against the offenders, he assured the gathering. Sukhu also said the state govt is focused on providing employment and skill development opportunities for those recovering from addiction, thereby integrating them back into mainstream society. He said, "The Himachal govt has approved the setting up of a fully equipped 100-bedded de-addiction centre in Kotla Barog of Sirmaur district with an outlay of Rs 5.34 crore. The construction will start this year. Himachal govt is working towards establishing a district-level de-addiction centre in every district." Highlighting the efforts of his govt, Sukhu said it approved the implementation of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act soon after assuming power, something that the previous BJP govt could not do during its five-year tenure. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The CM administered the anti-drug pledge and honoured various organisations and individuals on the occasion for their outstanding contributions in checking drug abuse in the state. Health and family welfare minister Col Dhani Ram Shandil (retd.) said much more still needs to be done in the fight against drug abuse. He emphasised the need for a large-scale movement akin to the freedom struggle, and said every individual must actively participate in to to uproot this evil. Drug peddlers are enemies of society, he added. Stating that values and discipline must be inculcated at home to prevent the youth from falling prey to drugs, the cabinet said, "This is essential for the success of any anti-drug campaign. Parents and teachers should maintain regular dialogue with children and encourage them to actively participate in sports and other constructive activities."

Kochi: At a time when society has grown increasingly vigilant about drug menace following a series of violent crimes, International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed in city with renewed calls for awareness, stronger enforcement and community-based prevention efforts. Commissionerate of customs (preventive), Kochi, conducted an awareness campaign for schoolchildren as part of Mission Drug Free India at Ernakulam Govt Higher Secondary School for Girls. Chief commissioner, central tax, central excise and customs, Shaikh Khader Rahaman inaugurated the function. Commissioner T Tiju conducted awareness session for students. Infopark hosted a range of programmes featuring a rally by students from eight schools. Adding a unique touch to the event, Thrikkakara assistant commissioner of police Shiju P S performed a song during inaugural ceremony at Athulya auditorium, helping draw more attention to the cause. Addressing the gathering, Shiju called upon children to earn the courage and determination to say 'no' even to close friends who may encourage them to do wrong things. Anti-drug rally was taken out from Athulya building to Infopark police station. Infopark assistant manager Sajith N G administered anti-drug pledge at the conclusion of the rally, which was organized by Infopark police station along with Progressive Techies — a socio-cultural and welfare organization of IT employees. At Park Centre, which is the administrative hub of IT complex in suburban Kakkanad, employees took an anti-drug pledge in the presence of Infopark CEO Susanth Kurunthil. Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran inaugurated an anti-drug campaign titled No Entry as part of the launch of a five-year project, SAFE (Substance Abuse Free Environment Village), being implemented in Ernakulam parliamentary constituency under the leadership of Hibi Eden, MP. Eden said goal of the project is to ensure collaborative efforts of public representatives, educational institutions and social organizations to address the serious challenge of protecting children and youth from influence of intoxicants. Prithviraj said there is a misconception in society that drugs are a fuel for creativity in film industry. He stated that no great work was ever created under influence of any drug. A drug awareness seminar was organized at Edathala MES MK Mackar Pillai College for Advanced Studies under the leadership of rural district police. An awareness cycle rally was conducted under the guidance of Kodanad police station. Perumbavoor ASP Shakti Singh Arya inaugurated the event. A pledge against drugs was taken at rural district police headquarters and additional SP M Krishnan administered oath.

Lauding the efforts of law enforcement agencies in tackling the drug menace in the city, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday said the Delhi police arrested 1,100 people booked in drug trafficking cases and destroyed 50,000 kg of seized drugs between January and April this year. 'The fight against drugs needs everyone's involvement. If we come together, I believe we can eliminate the drug menace,' Ms. Gupta said at an event held at the Yamuna Sports Complex on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The CM highlighted the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make India drug-free by 2047 and said the Delhi government is resolute in carrying out every responsibility towards achieving this goal. 'Addiction is of different kinds. Addictions like serving the nation and the society are needed and should be encouraged,' she said, urging people to report any suspicious drug-related activity on 1933, a dedicated government helpline number. BJP North East Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari called upon people to take a pledge to make Delhi a drug-free city. He said the Centre seized and destroyed drugs worth ₹25,000 crore in recent months. The event also featured street plays, awareness programmes, and musical shows on drug abuse, with participation from officials, Accredited Social Health Activists, teachers, and students. Meanwhile, Delhi Police concluded an anti-drug drive on Thursday and destroyed 1,629 kg of seized narcotics worth ₹3,274 crore, an officer said. (By Harshan Puzhankara)
