International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking: Awareness events against drug abuse held across city
Commissionerate of customs (preventive), Kochi, conducted an awareness campaign for schoolchildren as part of Mission Drug Free India at Ernakulam Govt Higher Secondary School for Girls. Chief commissioner, central tax, central excise and customs, Shaikh Khader Rahaman inaugurated the function. Commissioner T Tiju conducted awareness session for students.
Infopark hosted a range of programmes featuring a rally by students from eight schools.
Adding a unique touch to the event, Thrikkakara assistant commissioner of police Shiju P S performed a song during inaugural ceremony at Athulya auditorium, helping draw more attention to the cause. Addressing the gathering, Shiju called upon children to earn the courage and determination to say 'no' even to close friends who may encourage them to do wrong things.
Anti-drug rally was taken out from Athulya building to Infopark police station.
Infopark assistant manager Sajith N G administered anti-drug pledge at the conclusion of the rally, which was organized by Infopark police station along with Progressive Techies — a socio-cultural and welfare organization of IT employees.
At Park Centre, which is the administrative hub of IT complex in suburban Kakkanad, employees took an anti-drug pledge in the presence of Infopark CEO Susanth Kurunthil.
Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran inaugurated an anti-drug campaign titled No Entry as part of the launch of a five-year project, SAFE (Substance Abuse Free Environment Village), being implemented in Ernakulam parliamentary constituency under the leadership of Hibi Eden, MP.
Eden said goal of the project is to ensure collaborative efforts of public representatives, educational institutions and social organizations to address the serious challenge of protecting children and youth from influence of intoxicants.
Prithviraj said there is a misconception in society that drugs are a fuel for creativity in film industry. He stated that no great work was ever created under influence of any drug. A drug awareness seminar was organized at Edathala MES MK Mackar Pillai College for Advanced Studies under the leadership of rural district police. An awareness cycle rally was conducted under the guidance of Kodanad police station. Perumbavoor ASP Shakti Singh Arya inaugurated the event.
A pledge against drugs was taken at rural district police headquarters and additional SP M Krishnan administered oath.

Visakhapatnam: It was just the second day of her college when Neha (name changed) was offered to snort a powder by her friend and encouraged to check how it feels like. 'As I was told that there's no harm in trying once, I agreed,' Neha confesses. After that, the engineering student could not resist whenever she was offered to snort as she looks forward to it almost daily. 'When my pocket money gets exhausted, I resort to stealing from my dad's wallet,' Neha confesses with a tinge of guilt and helplessness. Although she desperately wants to stay away from drugs, she is unable to do so due to lack of support system to fall upon. At a time when drugs are easily accessible in every nook and corner of Visakhapatnam, how important is it to stick together as a community and battle as an extended family against growing drug menace? As educating students on the drug issue impacting their health, family and social life gains larger significance than ever, its easy accessibility demands effective prevention strategies and enhanced monitoring mechanisms. Unfortunately, it's not just college students who have easy access to drugs. Those studying in schools too are equally vulnerable. Six months back, when two Class VIII students studying in a Zilla Parishad High School got into a violent tiff, the school Principal had to intervene to calm them down. 'I had my own doubts as they were too unruly and abusive for their age. It was only later when I randomly checked their school bags, my doubts got confirmed. They carried drugs along with books. When students belonging to economically weaker sections could access drugs, imagine the plight of those who are from well-to-do families,' the Principal shares with The Hans India on condition of anonymity. Both the boys underwent counselling for a long period with the support of their parents. When both parents work, keeping a tab on the wards' altering behaviour becomes all the more tough. 'I hardly stay at home, while my wife works in a corporate school. When we realised that our son lost his appetite and looked energy-sapped most of the time, it was already late. We had to hospitalise him for a while before shifting to a deaddiction centre. His academic life has gone for a toss because of drug abuse,' laments the father of another student. Emphasising that building awareness among public, youth in particular, should step beyond special occasions such as 'International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking', Visakhapatnam-based substance abuse programme consultant V Surya Prakash Rao, says, 'Intense community-driven programmes should be part of the academic journey at the campuses. Given the magnitude of ganja menace at the moment, community participation in curbing drug menace is essential. As there are several cases that remain unreported for various reasons, intense awareness drives organised at frequent intervals aid in sensitising larger sections of students and nudging them to say 'no' to drugs in the first place itself.' The substance abuse programme consultant opines that school managements should come forward to allot quality time for the community-driven awareness programmes at the campus as the onus to fight against a concerning rise in drug abuse among youngsters lies on parents, teachers and peers. As part of a month-long Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan's campaign, a mass pledge against drug abuse is scheduled in Visakhapatnam on August 13 (Wednesday). Flash mobs, circulation of reels on social media platforms, administration of e-pledge, organisation of seminars and webinars, formation of human chain and plantation programmes form a part of the month-long drive that continues till August 31.

New twist in honey trap case as Kochi police book IT firm chief executive officer
KOCHI: In a new twist to the honey trap and extortion case involving a Kochi-based IT firm, the Kochi city police have booked the company owner based on a complaint by the woman accused in the case. The Infopark police have registered a case against Litmus7 CEO Venu Gopalakrishnan under various charges, including outraging the modesty of a woman and issuing threats. 'We registered the case after receiving a formal complaint from the woman. In her statement, she alleged that apart from Venu, three other persons from the company also threatened her,' said a source with Kochi city police, adding that a detailed investigation is underway. Advocate Kalyanakrishnan, counsel for the couple accused in honey trap case, said, 'This is not a counter-case. The IT firm owner, anticipating a sexual harassment case against him, lodged a complaint first in an attempt to evade the legal consequences.' The woman, who worked as personal assistant to Venu, resigned from the company after her marriage. Venugopal allegedly troubled her with a sexual intent. The honey trap allegation was a retaliatory move after she informed Venu of her intention to file a complaint under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act) against him with the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) at the workplace, said the advocate. 'The Ernakulam magistrate court granted bail after taking into account the arguments and concerns raised by us. Moreover, the bail was approved with standard conditions, including prior notice for appearances before the investigating team,'said Kalyanakrishnan. He also pointed out that the case filed against the couple appears to have been influenced by some top police official, and which has been mentioned in the bail application. The woman and her husband, both natives of Chavakkad in Thrissur, were arrested by the Ernakulam central police on July 29 based on a complaint by Venu, who accused the couple of extorting money by threatening to spread defamatory allegations and falsely implicate him in a sexual assault case. Police had also confirmed the seizure of cheque leaves valued at around `20 crore, along with related agreements, from the couple's possession.

Woman files sexual abuse case against Infopark employer
1 2 Kochi: A woman arrested by Kochi city police for allegedly attempting to extort money from her former employer — an IT company owner — has lodged an FIR against him for sexual harassment and intimidation. The Infopark police registered the FIR on Tuesday against Venu Gopalakrishnan (50) of Thuthiyoor, Kakkanad, and his employees Jacob, Ebi and Bimalraj. The FIR was registered under sections 351 (2) (intimidation), 79 (insult to a woman's modesty), 74 (criminal force to a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty), 75 (sexual harassment) and 3(5) (common intention) and IT Act. The alleged incident, as per the FIR, occurred between Feb 14, 2024 and July 24, 2025. Ernakulam Central police booked the couple on July 28 for the husband's purported bid to extort Rs 30 crore from Gopalakrishnan alleging he had an illicit relationship with his wife. The couple was arrested the following day but granted bail on July 30. The woman filed the sexual harassment complaint against Gopalakrishnan and others following that. Under the guise of mediation, they were called to a hotel's dining area. Though the employer had offered to apologize, they were arrested, the husband and wife alleged. In the bail plea, the couple alleged that the case was registered with the help of police higher-ups. The court noted in the bail order that the arrest appeared to have been done hurriedly and that after registering the FIR, a trap was seemingly laid to bring the couple to the hotel. The order said that quite unusually, like in NDPS cases, a tahsildar was brought in as a witness. The couple was arrested allegedly with three stamp papers, with the content being suppression of digital content in the form of screenshots, chats, etc. , in possession of the woman, which needs to be seen in the light of the claim of initiation of steps under the POSH Act, the bail order noted. It added that the arrest should have been preceded by an inquiry into what those digital contents were. "In the FIR, it is stated that the threatening conversation of the second accused (husband) is recorded but the remand report does not show that it was collected before the hurried arrest…." the order said. It added whether someone would create documents to prove extortion when he actually intends to extort is also doubtful and that the arrest appears to be done without collecting sufficient materials justifying an arrest. The woman has also approached the court demanding that her mobile phone seized by the police should be subjected to forensic examination to retrieve evidence of her allegations.
