Community support plays a key role in fighting against drug menace

Hans Indiaa day ago
Visakhapatnam: It was just the second day of her college when Neha (name changed) was offered to snort a powder by her friend and encouraged to check how it feels like. 'As I was told that there's no harm in trying once, I agreed,' Neha confesses.
After that, the engineering student could not resist whenever she was offered to snort as she looks forward to it almost daily. 'When my pocket money gets exhausted, I resort to stealing from my dad's wallet,' Neha confesses with a tinge of guilt and helplessness. Although she desperately wants to stay away from drugs, she is unable to do so due to lack of support system to fall upon.
At a time when drugs are easily accessible in every nook and corner of Visakhapatnam, how important is it to stick together as a community and battle as an extended family against growing drug menace?
As educating students on the drug issue impacting their health, family and social life gains larger significance than ever, its easy accessibility demands effective prevention strategies and enhanced monitoring mechanisms.
Unfortunately, it's not just college students who have easy access to drugs. Those studying in schools too are equally vulnerable. Six months back, when two Class VIII students studying in a Zilla Parishad High School got into a violent tiff, the school Principal had to intervene to calm them down. 'I had my own doubts as they were too unruly and abusive for their age. It was only later when I randomly checked their school bags, my doubts got confirmed. They carried drugs along with books. When students belonging to economically weaker sections could access drugs, imagine the plight of those who are from well-to-do families,' the Principal shares with The Hans India on condition of anonymity. Both the boys underwent counselling for a long period with the support of their parents.
When both parents work, keeping a tab on the wards' altering behaviour becomes all the more tough. 'I hardly stay at home, while my wife works in a corporate school. When we realised that our son lost his appetite and looked energy-sapped most of the time, it was already late. We had to hospitalise him for a while before shifting to a deaddiction centre. His academic life has gone for a toss because of drug abuse,' laments the father of another student.
Emphasising that building awareness among public, youth in particular, should step beyond special occasions such as 'International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking', Visakhapatnam-based substance abuse programme consultant V Surya Prakash Rao, says, 'Intense community-driven programmes should be part of the academic journey at the campuses. Given the magnitude of ganja menace at the moment, community participation in curbing drug menace is essential. As there are several cases that remain unreported for various reasons, intense awareness drives organised at frequent intervals aid in sensitising larger sections of students and nudging them to say 'no' to drugs in the first place itself.'
The substance abuse programme consultant opines that school managements should come forward to allot quality time for the community-driven awareness programmes at the campus as the onus to fight against a concerning rise in drug abuse among youngsters lies on parents, teachers and peers.
As part of a month-long Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan's campaign, a mass pledge against drug abuse is scheduled in Visakhapatnam on August 13 (Wednesday). Flash mobs, circulation of reels on social media platforms, administration of e-pledge, organisation of seminars and webinars, formation of human chain and plantation programmes form a part of the month-long drive that continues till August 31.

Actor Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra charged with cheating businessman of ₹60 cr

Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty has been charged with defrauding a Mumbai-based businessman of ₹60 crore. Shetty, along with her husband, businessman Raj Kundra, has been charged in a case that is linked to loan-cum-investment deal for the couple's now-defunct Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd, NDTV reported. Deepak Kothari, the alleged victim, said he had given the celebrity couple ₹60.48 crore for business expansion around 2015-2023, but they spent it on personal expenses. Kothari further claimed that he got in touch with Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra in 2015, through an agent, Rajesh Arya. During that time, the couple were the directors of Best Deal TV, an online shopping platform. Shilpa Shetty held over 87 per cent shares in the company back then. Loan restructured as investment According to Kothari, the agent, Rajesh Arya, had sought a loan of ₹75 crore at 12 per cent annual interest for the company. However, to avoid higher taxes, Arya suggested that he channel the amount as an 'investment'. A meeting was then held, and a deal was finalised with a promise of returning the money on time. In April 2015, Kothari transferred the first instalment of ₹31.95 crore; however, a tax issue persisted. Fresh funds and false assurances Soon, a second deal was signed in September. Kothari also claimed that he transferred ₹28.54 crore more between July 2015 and March 2016. Besides paying ₹3.19 lakh as stamp duty, Kothari, in total, transferred ₹60.48 crore to the celebrity couple. He further alleged that the actor also assured him of returning the money in April 2016 and gave a personal guarantee. Kothari also said that he was unaware of the insolvency case of ₹1.28 crore against the company, and his repeated requests for his money fell on deaf ears. Alleged conspiracy from 2015 to 2023 In his complaint, Kothari has accused the celebrity duo of running a well-planned conspiracy between 2015 and 2023, in which they took the money for business expansion purposes and channeled it for personal expenses. The case, which was first registered at Juhu Police Station for forgery and cheating, was later handed over to the Economic Offences Wing, since the amount exceeded ₹10 crore. Celebrity couple's past troubles Shilpa Shetty and her husband have previously been embroiled in controversies as well. In 2024, the Enforcement Directorate attached properties worth ₹97.79 crore belonging to the couple, alleging that they had collected huge amounts of funds in the form of Bitcoins. Kundra's residence and offices were also raided in November 2024 in connection with a case of money laundering investigation related to the production and distribution of pornographic content through mobile applications.

Animals to help kids with disabilities focus, connect in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Studies the world over have shown how animal-assisted therapy helps people with mental and neurodevelopmental conditions, and even age-related cognitive impairment. Now, for the first time in the state, the National Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (NIPMR), an autonomous institution under the state social justice department, has come up with a project to use animal therapy for children with autism. Social Justice Minister R Bindu recently announced the initiative. In the first phase, trained dogs will be used to address neurodevelopmental conditions in children. Studies will also be conducted on using farm animals for assisted therapy at a later stage. 'Animal-assisted therapy, or AAT, is a structured, goal-oriented intervention where trained animals form an integral part of therapy, guided by qualified professionals. Research shows that AAT can lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, improve posture, balance, and alertness, and boost confidence, motivation, and social skills,' Chandrababu C, executive director in charge of NIPMR, told the TNIE. As part of its pilot project, Thrissur-based NIPMR will employ the services of a trained golden retriever to interact with autistic children in the age group of four to seven. 'Services of the dog, who helped improve the condition of an autistic child, will be put to use for a larger group,' said Anna Daniel, principal of the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy Programme at NIPMR.
