Coronation Street airs deeply moving Roy and Hayley scene in early ITVX release

Metro07-05-2025

This article contains spoilers for tonight's Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on ITVX.
Roy Cropper (David Neilson) paid tribute to wife Hayley Cropper in a deeply moving scene in Coronation Street tonight, and our hearts can't take it.
Roy and Hayley were the very definition of soulmates, and were married for 15 years before Hayley sadly died in 2014.
After a battle with pancreatic cancer, Hayley decided to take control and end her life, with Roy's support.
In tonight's episode, Roy reflected on how it would have been Hayley's birthday, as he and vicar Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) discussed Julie Carp's (Katy Cavanagh) recent passing.
Later, he explained to Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown) how every year on Hayley's birthday he lights a candle on a cake to remember her.
Once Dee-Dee was gone, Roy wished Hayley a happy birthday before blowing out the candle.
He was further reminded of Hayley's passing later in the episode, when Brian Packham (Peter Gunn) confessed to reporting Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) to the police for helping Julie take her own life, despite the fact that this wasn't true. More Trending
However, Brian stood firm in his belief that Eileen was to blame for him losing the love of his life, though Roy tried in vain to convince him otherwise, having previously been in a similar position.
Roy explained how agonising it can be to see the person you love terrified and in pain, and that if Eileen had helped Julie to end her life then she deserved pity instead of retribution.
Though he didn't admit that he had been in the same position with Hayley, Roy insisted that having to take the life of a loved one, even though they begged for it, would be an enormous burden to carry.

Talking on The TV Podcast, Peter said: 'You've got Coronation Street being made in Manchester, Emmerdale in Leeds. 'Big savings' 'Could you imagine, rather like the daytime consolidation, that ITV will decide to have them both made in the same place under one umbrella? Big savings. 'You still keep Emmerdale set in Yorkshire, but it could be made in Manchester and Salford, which is a bigger hub for ITV. I don't think that's inconceivable — it might be being planned as we speak.' Merging the two shows in any way once seemed unthinkable, but recently ITV announced that it would air an episode next year where the soaps would have a joint storyline. The news came around the same time ITV announced a merger of production between Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women, with the expected loss of more than 200 jobs behind the scenes. Currently, Emmerdale is made just north of Leeds while Coronation Street is largely filmed at MediaCity in Salford, having previously been at the Granada Studios in Manchester for decades. Peter continued: 'The new hub for Coronation Street in Salford, it cost many, many millions of pounds and it was better facilities for all the people who worked on it in the old place in the middle of Manchester.' A spokesperson for ITV hit back at Peter's suggestion of a soap filming merge: 'ITV has no plans to merge the productions of Coronation Street and Emmerdale. 'Both are uniquely set in Manchester and Leeds, and that production model will continue for the long term. It's pure speculation to say otherwise.' Lucy Mecklenburgh puts on a leggy display in a stylish white skirt as she celebrates fiancé Ryan Thomas' birthday at Sexy Fish in Manchester

Lucy Mecklenburgh and fiancé Ryan Thomas looked loved-up as they arrived at Sexy Fish in Manchester on Tuesday to celebrate his 41st birthday. The former TOWIE star, 33, cut a trendy figure in a white and green patterned co-ord set as she walked hand-in-hand with her actor partner. Lucy put on a leggy display in the mini skirt, which she wore tucked into a black plunging blouse and layered over a matching blazer. She elevated her frame in a pair of black heels and toted her belongings in a matching clutch. Styling her long brunette tresses in loose waves, the reality star accessorised her ensemble with a pair of sunglasses and chunky gold earrings. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Meanwhile, Ryan looked dapper in a fitted white T-shirt which he paired with beige trousers and matching trainers. The couple - who are parents to son Roman, five, and daughter Lilah, three - looked happier than ever as they celebrated Ryan's special day. Coronation Street star Ryan is also a proud father to actress daughter Scarlett, 16, from a previous relationship with Tina O'Brien. The celebrations come after Lucy broke down in tears earlier this year as she took to TikTok to document 'one of the most emotional weeks of her life'. She was overcome with emotion as she Ryan and their kids packed up their 'memory filled' family home ahead of their move to a new property in Manchester. Lucy explained she'd bought the house as a single woman 11 years ago, but now the family needed more space. As photos were taken down from the walls of her daughter's bedroom and furniture packed away, the former TOWIE star sobbed saying she never expected the process to be such an emotional one. She said: 'One of the most emotional weeks of my life, I really didn't expect to get so emotional but I moved out of my home of 11-years this week. That's how we spent out half term, actually the kids had the best time'. The celebrations come after Lucy broke down in tears earlier this year as she took to TikTok to document 'one of the most emotional week of her life' 'We had mixed emotions because we outgrew this house so long ago, we've made the big move to Manchester and we're really happy. But there are so many memories I have hung onto in this house'. 'I went from being single, my first big renovation project, it was my first real home since moving out of my parents I guess. I brought my babies back from hospital here and honestly there's something about that, that I could never get rid of this house,'. Lucy continued: 'So we just made it work over the years, but it definitely wasn't big enough, we didn't have enough bedrooms, enough storage'. She went on to say that despite her tears the family had definitely made the right decision and it was 'time to go'. 'Seeing the rooms empty, is just the bit that made me cry,' she added.
