Garage fire causes huge plume of black smoke above town
A huge plume of smoke has risen across a town after a fire broke out at a commercial garage. Crews were called to the blaze on Jermyn Street in Rochdale at about 18:15 BST, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said. The fire involved a vehicle and a container at the garage, and took the combined efforts of four fire engines to put out, with firefighters still at the scene to continue damping down the area.A GMFRS spokeswoman said: "Crews arrived quickly and used three hose reels, a 45mm jet, a drone and aerial platform ladder to extinguish the fire." Influencer wife ‘defends husband' who hurled horrific abuse at Virgin Atlantic stewardess he threatened to ‘gang rape'
ONE of the wives of a business tycoon who threatened to gang rape an air hostess during a flight has appeared to defend her partner online. Disturbing footage captured the moment Salman Iftikhar, 37, told Virgin Atlantic crew member Angie Walsh she would be attacked in her hotel after landing. 9 9 9 Iftikhar later threatened to blow up the five-star hotel where the cabin crew were set to stay. He was finally caged for 15 months at Isleworth Crown Court on Tuesday after admitting making threats to kill and racially aggravated harassment. Iftikhar's vile rant was spouted on an eight-hour flight from London Heathrow to Lahore, Pakistan, on February 7 2023. Prosecutor Abdul Kapadia said Iftikhar was drinking champagne at the onboard bar and leant over to get his own ice. He said: "When told to stop, the defendant became irate, and started to film cabin crew with his phone, telling them: 'Do not tell me what to do you b***h. "When asked by the cabin crew to return to his seat, he then said: 'Don't tell me what to do you racist f***ing b***h. I know where you are from in Cardiff." He continued to call Ms Walsh a "f***ing b***h" before his escalating behaviour sparked a possible flight diversion to Turkey. Mr Kapadia added: "His wife was ashamed. His three children were also on-board, and other crew members were called to assist, but the defendant continued shouting and swearing. "He was slurring his words, with his voice raised." 9 9 9 The out-of-control passenger then told cabin crew he would blow up the floor of their hotel. No action was taken against Iftikhar when he stepped off the aircraft in Pakistan. He was only arrested at his expensive detached home in Iver after his holiday. The judge also took into account Iftikhar's six previous convictions, including a common assault - a record she described as "lengthy and appalling". Iftikhar was living a life of luxury before his jail stint. He boasts a range of expensive cars on his driveway in Buckinghamshire including a Range Rover, Bentley and Rolls-Royce. In one photo, he is seen posing in front of a royal blue Rolls-Royce kitted out with a white leather interior. Other extravagant snaps show a number of his pricey motors parked outside the home of the Buckinghamshire property. A neighbour of Iftikhar, who asked that their identity remain anonymous, told the Daily Mail: "He's definitely very flash, someone who likes to flaunt his wealth. "How he made his money is beyond me, he ran a recruitment consultancy but I didn't really tend to see him leave for work. He was around the house most of the time. "I can't quite believe that one passenger has had this much of an impact on my, my job, my career and my life," she said. "I am a strong brave, happy stewardess, and loved my job. I was working when all flights were grounded on 9/11, and I've even flown into a warzone. But this incident has broken me. "But I don't feel strong enough anymore. Southport window cleaner who was hailed a hero after he rushed to help injured stabbing victims appears in court for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend
A window cleaner who was hailed a hero after he rushed to save children in the Southport knife attack has appeared in court for assaulting his pregnant partner. Joel Verite, 26, was on his lunch break when he rushed to the attack at the Taylor Swift-themed dance and came face-to-face with evil killer Axel Rudakubana. Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, Bebe King, six, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, were killed in the brutal slayings with eight other children and two adults also injured. The fitness trainer, 27, who is believed to have been suffering from PTSD following the attack, assaulted his girlfriend in front of his baby, Liverpool Crown Court heard today. Sarah McInerney, representing the Crown Prosecution Service, told the court that Verite had been in an 'on-off' relationship with Freya Aughton-Rimmer for around a year. On October 18, they had an argument after Verite had been cropped out of an image, where he then followed the victim into the kitchen. While Ms Aughton-Rimmer fed her first-born child Weetabix, the 27-year-old asked if she was in a mood, the court heard. The defendant then began to shout and swear, before hitting the bowl out of the victim's hands, with the contents spilling 'up the wall', Ms McInerney said. Ms Aughton-Rimmer requested he leave the property, however Verite followed her, asking if he could see his child. When he was told no, he carried on following the victim upstairs, where he pushed her in the back and she fell. Following the incident, Ms Aughton-Rimmer fled upstairs and called the window cleaner's mother to come and get him. The judge told Verite: 'I would have thought going through the dreadful experiences you had would make you less likely to use violence.' Verite admitted to common assault and criminal damage but denied assault by beating, the Liverpool Echo reported. At trial, the crown accepted Verite's actions were reckless and he did not intend to harm the victim. Ms McInerney told the court the offences were aggravated by the fact it occurred in the presence of a child, in a domestic context and that the victim was pregnant. Verite, received an 18 months suspended sentence for criminal damage, common assault and two counts of assault by beating. He was also ordered to pay £504 in court costs as well as to carry out 25 days of rehabilitation and 180 hours of unpaid work.
