Walker's clutch hits help Cardinals overcome fielding gaffes in 6-5 win over Arizona
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jordan Walker had two hits and drove in three runs, rebounding from a critical fielding gaffe with an RBI single that lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-5 win Saturday over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
After his failed sliding attempt to catch Josh Naylor's two-run triple in the eighth allowed Arizona to rally into the lead, Walker delivered the winning run with an RBI single off Justin Martinez (1-2) in the bottom half of the inning.
The Diamondbacks lost their fourth straight game. St. Louis has won 15 of 19.
Geraldo Perdomo and Eugenio Suárez raced around to tie the game 4-4 when Naylor's line drive bounced in front of Walker and rolled to the wall. Naylor then scored when Grichuk's pop-up fell in shallow center for a double.
Ryan Helsley (2-0) was credited with the win for a scoreless ninth. He struck out Suárez with runners on second and third to end the game.
Matthew Liberatore allowed six hits and one run, on Grichuk's leadoff home run in the fifth. Liberatore struck out six Diamondbacks and didn't walk anyone, a hallmark of his strong start to 2025.
Arizona starter Merrill Kelly gave up four runs on six hits while striking out five. His only walk preceded Walker's two-dun double that ended his outing with no outs in the seventh.

NEW YORK – Columbus Blue Jackets centre Sean Monahan has been awarded the 2024-25 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, the NHL announced Thursday. The award honours perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey, commemorating Bill Masterton, a Minnesota North Stars player who died from an on-ice injury in 1968, and is voted on annually by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Monahan earned the trophy for his resilience and leadership after the tragic death of his close friend and teammate Johnny Gaudreau last August. Liverpool rejects Barcelona approach for Luis Diaz, AP source says
Liverpool has rejected an approach from Barcelona for forward Luis Diaz, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the information has not been made public. Spanish champion Barcelona is looking to strengthen, and Diaz and Manchester United's Marcus Rashford were on a list of reported targets. It is not known how much Barcelona was prepared to pay for Colombia international Diaz, but Liverpool informed the Catalan club he was not for sale, the person said. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Winning Game 1 of the NBA Finals does not guarantee anything. The 79th title series in league history — it has been called different names over the years — starts Thursday night, when the Oklahoma City Thunder play host to the Indiana Pacers. And the winner of Game 1 will obviously leave the floor feeling good about themselves. But in the past 78 years, only 55 Game 1 winners have gone on to eventually win the title — or just about 71%. If the winner is the Thunder, it's a really good sign. Teams that win Game 1 at home have ultimately prevailed 78% of the time (47 out of 60). If the Pacers win, their odds of winning the title improve dramatically but they probably still wouldn't be called favorites. Teams that win Game 1 on the road only end up winning the series 44% of the time (8 out of 18). But it should be noted as well that the last time the Thunder were in the NBA Finals, they had the home-court advantage over the Miami Heat.
