Poland charges citizen with spying for Russia
Warsaw says its role as a hub for supplies to Ukraine has made it a target for spies and sabotage from Russia. Moscow has repeatedly dismissed such accusations.
"The prosecutor charged the detained Polish citizen Wiktor Z. with declaring readiness to act for the intelligence of the Russian Federation and conducting activities for its benefit," the State Prosecutor's Office said in a press release.
These included collecting and transmitting information concerning, among other things, the functioning of facilities key to Poland's defence, according to the statement, which did not elaborate.
"The suspect, Wiktor Z., is 28 years old and has higher education. According to the findings, he acted out of ideological motives and pro-Russian beliefs," it added.
Wiktor Z. was detained on June 4 by Poland's Internal Security Agency and could face between eight years and life in prison, according to the press release.
The Russian embassy in Warsaw did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
Warsaw says Moscow has been behind a series of acts of sabotage in Poland, including a huge fire at a Warsaw shopping centre last year, as well as cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns. Moscow has accused Warsaw of 'Russophobia'.

Brian Glenn, the chief White House correspondent for Real America's Voice, told Trump during an Oval Office press availability with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday how safe the city feels after Trump took drastic action last week. During the Oval Office meeting, which was centered on negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war, Glenn praised Trump for deploying the National Guard to the nation's capital and federalizing the city's police. He celebrated the commander-in-chief's overwhelming action, arguing that the city feels safer now that he can walk around with his ultra-conservative Republican girlfriend. Over the weekend, there were 137 arrests made in the district, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Monday. Nearly 400 arrests have been made in D.C. since Trump announced the federal government was stepping in. 'I walked around yesterday with MTG,' Glenn told the president. 'If you can walk around with DC with MTG, the city is safe.' Greene agrees, telling the Daily Mail in a phone call on Monday that the city has noticeably changed in the week since Trump has exerted control. I've got some of the most death threats among the members of Congress and the House of Representatives,' she said. 'And Washington, D.C., has been one of the most dangerous cities in the country.' Since coming to Washington in 2021, Greene has mostly holed up at her D.C. home. She told the Daily Mail she has only gone on a handful of walks over a few miles, partly due to crime in the city and her high-profile as a conservative lawmaker. There have been many high-profile crimes recently in the city, Greene was quick to point out. The conservative mentioned the recent fatal shooting of a congressional intern, who was killed after being caught in crossfire near a metro station last month. She also mentioned the 2023 carjacking of Democratic Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar. 'But it has been a drastic change,' Greene said of Trump's crime crackdown. Normally reticent to journey out into the heavily liberal district, Greene described an idyllic weekend spent with her beau. 'We went for a four-mile walk ... we walked all the way down the National Mall past the Washington Memorial down past [the] Lincoln,' she said. 'We went such a long way. And it was a beautiful day, and it felt safer than it ever has. We saw National Guard out, saw more D.C. Metro Police presence, which looked completely different,' Greene added. 'There's been a lot of homeless people and just people that are seen as threatening are no longer out on the streets, which is a big change.' The congresswoman admitted that, though she always feels safe with Glenn, the additional authorities deployed by Trump have given her added confidence. 'We were able to walk to dinner, to go out to dinner. So that was a lovely date. I enjoyed it so much. I always feel safe with Brian. He's one of my greatest defenders,' she added. 'But it's pretty hard to live somewhere and work in a city where you just can't go out and about.' During the White House event, Glenn even evoked some laughs when he complimented Zelensky for wearing a suit to the White House. 'President Zelensky, you look fabulous in that suit,' Glenn said, prompting Trump to laugh. The journalist, who asked Zelensky earlier this year why he did not wear a suit to the White House, noted that the Ukrainian president decided to change his wardrobe during this trip to D.C. Greene praised her boyfriend for questioning Zelensky's outfit after the Oval Office event. 'I'd like to recognize [Brian Glenn] for his success in upholding the proper White House wardrobe attire,' MTG posted on X. 'If Brian had never asked Zelenskyy the question, 'why don't you wear a suit, do you own a suit?' I'm not sure he would have ever worn one to visit our great and respected President!'

ITV has reportedly launched a formal investigation into Good Morning Britain after viewers were left appalled by a 'humiliating blunder too big to ignore'. The popular daytime show covered the 80th anniversary of Holocaust Memorial Day back in January - but failed to say its victims were Jewish. The event commemorates the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, by the Soviet Red Army in 1945. During a segment reporting on King Charles 's visit to the camp, anchor Ranvir Singh listed several groups who were murdered at the camp, but did not include Jews - who suffered the most deaths. The presenter said: 'Six million people were killed in concentration camps during the Second World War, as well as millions of others because they were Polish, disabled, gay or belonged to another ethnic group.' The segment sparked outrage, with both ITV and Singh apologising for the 'mistake'. But now, insiders are claiming that bosses have launched a fresh probe into how it happened, according to The Sun. A source told the publication: 'Good Morning Britain is a flagship programme for ITV and to allow a blunder like this was too big to simply ignore.' They continued: 'ITV pride themselves on their news coverage but this was lower than sub par. 'Fingers of blame have been pointed but now the probe will uncover who allowed it to happen and there will be consequences.' The Daily Mail has contacted ITV for comment. It comes after the Campaign Against Antisemitism shared the footage on X and accused Ms Singh of 'dire reporting'. 'Jews. The word you're looking for is 'Jews', not 'people'. 'This dire reporting is not only factually incorrect but erases Jews from a genocide in which six million Jewish men, women and children were slaughtered specifically because they were Jews.' The CAA said that during the whole two-minute segment on Holocaust Memorial Day, which included a piece to camera from GMB correspondent Nick Dixon live from Auschwitz, there was only one mention of Jews. They accepted that the segment mentioned history students taking a tour of the Jewish quarter of Kraków but said it failed to mention the word 'antisemitism'. Issuing an apology at the time, Ms Singh said: 'In yesterday's news, when we reported on the memorial events in Auschwitz, we said six million people were killed in the Holocaust but crucially failed to say they were Jewish. 'That was our mistake, which we apologise for.' More than a million people were murdered by the Nazis at Auschwitz. Most of them were Jews, while others were Poles, Soviet prisoners of war, Roma and members of other persecuted groups. King Charles shed a tear during the Memorial Day as he listened to stories from Holocaust survivors during his visit to Auschwitz - the first for a British head of state. He said in an address: 'It is a moment when we recall the depths to which humanity can sink, when evil is allowed to flourish, ignored for too long by the world. 'In a world that remains full of turmoil and strife, and has witnessed the dangerous re-emergence of antisemitism, there can be no more important message – especially as the United Kingdom holds the Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. 'As the number of Holocaust survivors regrettably diminishes with the passage of time, the responsibility of remembrance rests far heavier on our shoulders, and on those of generations yet unborn. 'The act of remembering the evils of the past remains a vital task and in so doing, we inform our present and shape our future.'
